If we get good summer rains the burn areas will green up quick and might be good for hunting. I know a couple of weeks after the Wallow fire burned areas were already greening up.

West Clear Creek is fun also. If you can stage a vehicle on the south side you can do a one way trip. Go in on Maxwell trailhead and hike out around the Narrows about 5 miles down stream.

The last thing for me to do to finish off the bow is find some antler buttons to replace the steel limb knobs. I think that would look cool.

Thanks. Took it slow as it was a big learning curve. As cool as the ironwood looks I don't think I would use it again for the riser. What a PITA wood to work with. It ate 6 carbide rasp bits for my air grinder, causes respiratory issues as it is somewhat poisonous, and stinks when you are carving it. But if you have the stubborn patience to work it you can get it to shine like a car. Other than wax I don't have any finish on it, just sanded for hours down to 1000 grit. Ended up 46lb draw at 28 inches.

My neighbor makes his own bows. He wanted to try making a recurve so I went in halves to buy the plans and build the oven and limb form. He helped guide me in building a 3 piece takedown using Bingham plans. I tried to keep it as local as possible. Riser is ironwood, Turquoise inlay where there were natural cracks in the riser. Maple/fiberglass limbs. The snakeskin was from a rattler that I caught eating a packrat in my shop. and the limb tips are from a coues shed from the Santa Rita's. Oh, hand made the arrows also, the fletching is from my first turkey. Drew an early archery cow tag in 5bn. Thinking of using this bow.

Started my youngest boy out on a used Hoyt Ruckus. 10yo. Had a hard time pulling back 25lbs at first but quickly worked his way up to 45lbs. Adjustable from 15 to 27 inch draw and 15 to 45 lbs. He's on the edge of being to big for it now.

It's the left side that got us thinking. You are right, the rest of that deer screams mule deer. What I find interesting is what G&F had to say. The genetics aspect of this hybrid thing is cool. And now that we are seeing more whitetail encroach on mule deer territory, statistically we're going to have more opportunities for this to happen. I'm curious what different looks are possible. I bet you could have a hybrid that looks 100% like one or the other and you would never know. It's just interesting to me. So if it looks like one or the other shoot it and tag it appropriately, then enjoy the steaks!

We spoke with a Game and Fish biologist yesterday. She said the only way to truly know is to send in a sample. But she also said there is a real good chance it is a hybrid. For a couple of years now we're seen Coues bucks running with mulie doe's in Dec/Jan. She confirmed that the area where this guy was spotted has hybrids, and it's more common due to the Coues taking over traditional mulie territory. Hybrids can look 100% like one or the other. Hybrids do not reproduce so there will never be a large # of them. And it's usually Coues bucks mating with mulie doe's that create the hybrids. Being archery season and any antlered deer can be taken in the unit it doesn't matter much but what if it was rifle season? We asked her that and she had to call around looking for an answer. Ends up Game and FIsh does not have an official policy on shooting hybrids! She said they need one as more and more hybrids are being spotted now that Whitetails are slowly encroaching into traditional Mulie range. Personally, if it were rifle whitetail season I would have chosen to not shoot. But if Mulie season I would have.

I know huh! Totally looks like a mulie. big roman nose, rope tail... But that profile shot, the antlers look whitetail. Either way. I've got a target! Just need to get my sneek on.
