Oldest boy shot a young jake at about 6:30 opening morning. Turkeys weren't very vocal all weekend. Gobbles coming out of the roost and off and on till about 7am then they shut up. Didn't hear or see a single hen. The one in the pic was one of 6 jakes bachelored up. Going back up on the 9th so the youngest son can get a second chance to fill. Hope the hens will be hot in a couple of weeks.
Set my box call on the back tire of the truck and forgot about it. Ran it over! Little Creek just got an order!

How many are in Arizona right now? New Mexico?So 80 in the wild total? Or just 80 in the wild in AZ? I read somewhere there are 300 in captivity?
So what is the total worldwide population and where are they? 1k? 20k? 200,000? Are there a bunch in mexico?
I know with it's larger cousin the gray wolf there are like 200,000 worldwide so why re-introduce them in the States? It's not like they are endangered or anything like that. Is this the same case with the Mexican Gray?
I think we all like our game animals to much to want these in our backyard. I would like to know the whole story though.
So, looks like there are under 400 Mexican gray wolves left. Not 4000, not 40000... 400. in the whole world, 400.
What if we rounded up all the wild ones left and put them back in captivity. Then let them slowly die off due to inbreeding and what not caused by keeping then penned up. That would keep our game animal populations safe wouldn't it?
As hunters, we are all members of the original conservationists group. Without out efforts (and money) game animal populations probably would not be in the shape they are currently. That being said who here is ok with helping to contribute to the complete extinction of a species? Is that what we want? To wipe them off of the face of the planet forever?
I don't know what the answer and I don't want my game animal populations decimated, but I sure as heck don't want to be associated with helping to kill off a species.

How much are you looking to shave weight wise? I find it easier to shave 5 to 10lbs of fat than to squeeze out a few ounces in lightweight gear.

False triggers are in the hundreds with the camera out for a week. Thieves have caused me to have to hide cameras like this. The trade off is bogus pics. Easy enough to sort through though.

Taken the youngest up Thursday for Friday's muzzy bull hunt. Should be a good hunt, was surrounded by 5 bulls bugling two days ago. Can't wait.

Do you have links to these products? I've been searching and can't find anything designed the way I'm thinking. Lots of cell phone tech but no LAN/WIFI stuff.

Only takes a few bad apples I suppose.
I should design a super small camera system that communicates over wifi to a main unit that controls camera action and stores images/video. The cameras can be as small as a pencil eraser. run each one off of a 9 volt or something small. hide them in trees, bushes, fake rocks. 300 ft range. That would be sweet.

My youngest boy has the 22S muzzleloader bull hunt this year. While putting out a couple of cameras Saturday morning I noticed a metal camera box cabled to a tree at a tank I like to hunt. Went over to wave and get my picture taken and noticed that the bottom of the metal box was pry'ed open and the camera was missing.
1st, If you have active cameras in 22s right now you might want to check up on them. 2nd what is up with Payson and camera thieves? I had a camera stolen last year in the same general area.
I ended up not putting a camera on that tank by the way.

I started scouting this unit about 6 weeks before the hunt. Started second guessing where I was scouting because all I was seeing was cows and raghorns. I was scouting the usual known good areas without seeing any nice bulls. I was told by someone on this site (forgot who) to not worry about it, that the bigger bulls would show up as the rut started to heat up. Sure enough about two weeks before the hunt I started to see more bulls and bigger bulls. So, if you are scouting and seeing good numbers of cows the bulls will follow eventually.

The wife drew this tag and got a nice bull last year. I also had a camera stolen last year off of a tank in this unit. My wife's requirements for hunting is she won't kill a female, they are to pretty. And it has to be tee shirt weather. So that limits the hunts quite a bit as she is not interested in archery.
This might piss a few of you off but... she drew this tag again this year. Unfriggin believable! She has put in for elk three times in her life and drew this tag twice back to back.
Feeling guilty and not wanting to bring on any bad elk hunting juju, she has decided to give her tag to our youngest son (he's 13). This will be his first bull hunt.

No BS. The bull dropped in it's tracks. The all copper bullet expanded to about .80 of an inch. At the range it was holding 2 inch groups at 100 yards. I would be comfortable out to 250 yards with this setup.

Big Bull Down!1st time hunter got the job done. My wife managed to overcome the jitters long enough to seal the deal. The adrenaline rush right afterwards caused some emotions! I think she is hooked. Shot him at about 6:00 pm Saturday night. 40 yard head on shot dropped him in his tracks. we tried cow calling him in for 30 minutes but he wouldn't leave his cows plus there were two other satelite bulls harrasing him also. Wind was perfect and we were able to sneak into 50 yards but it was so thick you couldn't see him. He still would not budge with the cow calls. We were running out of light so I went for broke. I screamed at him with my bugle, raked a tree then screamed again. That was it, he had had it. He screamed back and made a beeline straight at us. I had the wife setup with her rifle on my tripod and two 50 yard shooting lanes setup. He stepped into one of them at 40 yards and she let go. He is a 6x6 with one of his 5ths broke from fighting. I just finished scoring him and it came in at 326. Big blocky head with a mean roman nose. fresh scars on his head from fighting.
He hung at the butcher at 461 lbs. What would be a good guess at his live weight?

Looking forward to getting the calls.
I have a question about the turkey behavior we saw this weekend. Hens were quiet and jakes/toms were herded up. Pre mating. post mating, or maybe weather related?
