Still trying to locate Bulls for my first Elk Hunt in 6A:(
GreyGhost85 replied to TwoOneEight Photography's topic in Elk Hunting
i've spent a total of 4 hours archery hunting in 6A. drove into camp at 4:00 am, walked out of camp chasing bugles, called in a bull for a buddy, he shot him at 60 yards, hunt was over at 7:00 am opening day. nice 310" 6 point down. if there are cows there, there will be bulls there when the hunt starts. people get too carried away trying to locate velvet bulls before their archery hunts. look for cows. chances are, where you see the bulls won't be where they are when the hunt opens anyways. velvet bulls are fun to look at and i enjoy seeing pics of them, but a lot of the time they are just superficial sightings -

Don't even bother looking for bulls right now. Find where the cows are. That's where the bulls will be when the hunt starts. On a positive note, that double-beamed buck in your video is awesome. -
Yeti, Grizzly, and Canyon Coolers What is the Difference???

I have a pelican. Its a badas-s cooler. I like them better than any of the ones you mentioned. -
Go home Mathews, you're drunk

picked up a good mule that was at that auction, one i've been trying to acquire for a few years now. Mules are out there, but they are kind of at a premium anymore. 3-5 k for a pretty good mule that isn't 30 years old is pretty standard as of now

i sit in blinds from dark till dark every year. i am a reader. i have considered headphones, but am afraid i won't hear the deer coming in. those 16 hour days get really long after 3 or 4 of them in a row.

good job on shooting a boar!

Last season was my first season bowhunting and I didn't kill a buck but I actually like to hunt. If I just wanted to kill stuff I would be road hunting or sitting in blinds You are a complete fool. I am once again at a loss for words due to the extreme ignorance in one of your posts. You have a lot to learn about the ways of the world kid. Judging by your avatar, you don't quite have the stature to run your mouth like you do either

Red rocket and all. The one bull is playing for keeps. Is this in an elk prison?
-
How many bucks have you killed with a bow, bradbaker? It's not quite as easy as shooting fish in a barrel...... with a shotgun. But go ahead and continue to thump your chest, kid.

bears are extremely nomadic. they just wander around without much rhyme or reason. if they are there, they are easy to spot. not like coues where they could be laying in the open all day and you just miss them. They also have a MUCH larger "home range" than most animals. if he is not there, move, not in the 2nd spot? move.

anybody have exper. w/colored night time photos
GreyGhost85 replied to MT_Sourdough's topic in Trail Cameras
one thing to consider about using a camera with a real flash. i have been on hills glassing in low light and have seen flashes going off a long ways away. walk over to the area and low and behold, a game camera. -
i'll nap or play games or read in the times when deer don't show up. seems like 9-11 and 2-4 are the best times for me in august over salt
-
that is something that needs to happen for sure. it would probably make people size up the bears a little better before they decide to shoot one. i have no idea why someone would want to shoot a small bear? can't show it off, rugs look ridiculous, if you like eating bears, there is next to zero meat on a small on. maybe you could make a hat, or a toilet seat cover out of one? i've killed one bear, about 200-220lb boar i figured and i was a little hesitant to have him rugged out. i will not shoot another one unless he is great big. no sense in having a "trophy room" littered with cub rugs on the wall. bears really have a lot of "ground shrinkage". seeing pictures of people with bears that are the same size as the gun or bow in the picture drives me crazy

i've seen them totally done by archery deer, even a couple that had rubbed velvet already, and i've seen them that still have a LOT of growing to do the same year. i think the majority of bucks are pretty well done by about the 1st or 2nd week of september

is your buddy's name Marty Mcfly? looks like someone would have to hop in a DeLorean to find a pair of those

should be on par with beef. Coues has zero marbling in the meat, as with pretty much all game. you are better off eating it near raw then overcooked

an average size de-boned bull should fit or come real close to it in a 120qt. if it's cold, let the meat hang in camp over night and wake up before it starts to heat up. put down a couple layers of blankets or sleeping bags, put your meat on them and pile some more blankets and bags on top of it. this will keep it plenty cool enough for a quick trip back to the valley -
Str8, is that you? you sneaky SOB

salt does help to attract game, but it is not the golden ticket like some people think. salt licks usually take years before they become really productive and deer make using them a habit. they are a lot of work to maintain as well. a lot of people "hate" on using salt, but most of those people do not understand how much work it is hauling 100lb salt bags sometimes miles. i use salt licks and have been doing so for probably 12 years now. i have killed 2 deer over salt and usually hunt over a salt source every year in august/january. 2 years out of 10-12 is not a real high success rate! they do not attract deer like bait does, although the haters tend to think they do.

you will most likely see some rutting. they usually go pretty strong until about then. rut won't be full blown, but you will hear bugles, see bulls with cows, etc.

I've had wild horses mess me up on more antelope/deer/elk hunts in unit 1 and 27 than i care to discuss. seems like every time i am making my way in on an animal i kick up a heard of wild horses. they are pretty ornery too. i think most of them up there have gotten loose from the sprucedale guest ranch and multiplied like rabbits

it had nothing to do Utah trying to keep the deer in their state or anything. i am not too educated on the subject, but i think it was to reduce the amount of deer casualties that occurred on the roadway and diverting the deer to cross where it is safe. from what i have heard the first year it really changed the deer patterns a lot, but hey have gotten used to it for the most part and are getting back into their historic patterns
