Complete Blessing: Spot and Stalk Archery Antelope
GreyGhost85 replied to Tunachaser's topic in Antelope Hunting
nice buck, especially with a bow. Not sure about the part of being "bummed" because you draw your 2nd antelope tag and are 20ish years old? i have 18bp, my brother 19, dad 23 BP for antelope. i don't think any of us would be "bummed" with an antelope tag -
A winter with heavy snowfall also has a lot to do with antler growth. growing up in the white mountains, i have always paid close attention to moisture levels and horn growth. i think a wet winter has at least as much to do with good antler growth as a wet summer. also a factor that not many people take into consideration is that on a dry year, the enamel layer of antlers is not nearly as thick and strong as it is on a wet year. this leads to bulls that are busted up really bad. i personally think that is why the bulls in 9 and 10 are usually busted up so bad, as compared to units like 1 and 27. Where moisture really helps animals is plant moisture. just because there are many water holes in an area has nothing to do with antler growth. if there is no moisture in the feed, they don't get the nutrients they need to grow big, STRONG antlers

i saw a thread on some hoochie mama game calls that turned into a bashing. Rather than knocking the guy trying to sell an item, i would like to see where everyone stands on these. Personally, i feel that they are the worst thing that has ever happened to true elk callers. when they first came out probably 10-15 years ago, they worked pretty darn good. it takes the skill and "art" if you will, out of elk calling. Now, i think in a lot of places a hoochie mama is about as effective as a gun shot. on archery elk hunts, every time you hear an elk bugle, you hear 10 hoochie mama calls squealing through the woods. These calls have made elk shy to answer any kind of elk calls. before their invention, you could cow call and bugle bulls in all day long, and now the preferred method for all of the very seasoned elk hunters that i know, is bugle to locate a bull, then don't call again. Nothing will ever beat a good diaphragm call being used by someone who has mastered them.

where i hunt, the rain came a little late for the elk it seemed like, so they have average-decent antler growth. the rain seemed to be just in time for the deer, and they are having a great year. all the bucks i watch have put on a lot of growth since last year

Harris is the way to go. i've spent money on knock offs and they seem to work good for a couple seasons before they fall apart. i have had a harris for probably 7 years now, and stillworks flawlessly

new to hunting in AZ ..unit 22 help please
GreyGhost85 replied to grizzlyguy's topic in Bowhunting for Coues Deer
post #1, NICE! I'll save you some trouble as well. go to www.azgfd.gov, where to hunt, and check the hunt unit descriptions. they will point you in the right direction. unit 22 has a lot of competition, and the locals are very secretive of their spots -
last year i had a TON of bears on all of my game cameras, and not many mature bucks at all. this year for some reason, i have very few bears coming in, and lots of big, mature bucks. i see a direct correlation in number of bears, and number of mature bucks. i think that big old bucks are just very shy, and want to keep out of harm's way and avoid danger whenever possible. little bucks and does don't seem to mind the bears. big bucks are big for a reason and they know that a big old rogue boar can see them as a meal, just like a lion. I am not saying that bears are as hard on deer as lions, but they are opportunistic animals, especially the big, mature bears. if a deer is going to hang around, the bear will try to kill it. last year, during the bear influx, much of the bear scat i found had deer hair in it. just my two cents, but i am a FIRM believer that big bucks avoid areas with a heavy bear concentration.

I'm sitting at 18 BP and have debated cashing mine in on an archery tag. I hunt colorado antelope most years to satisfy my craving, but i want to kill a BIG arizona buck. i have taken 4 between 70-78"

nevermind. i think that was an old pope and young/boone and crockett stipulation. i found this in the regs: d. Electronic night vision equipment, electronically enhanced light-gathering devices, thermal imaging devices or laser sights; except for devices such as laser range finders, scopes with selfilluminating reticles, and fiber optic sights with self-illuminating sights or pins that do not project a visible light onto an animal.
-
i am not positive, but isn't it illegal to use any kind of an electronic device attached to your bow or rifle in Arizona? i thought i had heard somewhere that technically lighted nocks, sight lights, illuminated reticles, smart scopes, etc are not legal here? maybe someone can expand on this?

i do understand that some people actually do have allergies to gluten and dairy, and i am not in any form trying to bash those specific people. the gluten free thing is a fad though. when you eat a whole bowl of pasta, you feel bloated, and your stomache doesn't feel right. that's the way it is, it doesn't mean you have an "intolerance". when people cut out gluten and have these dramatic weight loss, and feel good stories, it is probably due to the fact that they don't eat so many carbs anymore, they lose a bunch of weight, and in turn, feel bettter. it is a simple diet that everyone has heard of. everyone has an intolerance to certain things if you over do them. just like people eating a block of cheese and either getting the squirts, or getting plugged up, and blaming it on "lactose intolerance". it has nothing to do with "lactose intolerance", it is a fact that if you drink a half gallon of milk, or a block of cheese, it is going to make you feel crappy. you don't see people that get a belly ache from eating too dang much candy claim they have a "sugar inolerance", or a guy that has one too many beers blame his hangover on some kind of intolerance.

that is a very couesy-lookin' mule deer. I thought it was a big ol' whitey for a while. nice bull too

man, that buck would have been a giant in 2-3 more years. congrats on the success

gotta love when post #1 is asking for help on a hunt. I'll tell you the same thing most other people on here are going. go to azgfd.gov and look at the hunt unit descriptions. it will give you some places to start
-
looks like you have found a "doe hole", at least that's what I call similar areas. I have noticed on my salt licks that some will be predominantly bucks, and others will be mostly does. don't why it seems that way, or if it is just coincidence.

Where do you store your tag before hunting season?
GreyGhost85 replied to CouesWhitetail's topic in The Campfire
i go a little overboard in ensuring i don't misplace them. i thumb tack them to the wall in a very visible place that i see every day. i have even tacked them to the ceiling before -
How Fat is Fat? The All American State of Denial and BMI
GreyGhost85 replied to Healy Arms's topic in Hunting Fitness
yeah i have to strongly disagree with BMI chart. i am 6'5" 230 lbs, probably 8-10% body fat, weight train 5 days a week, hiking on the weekends, and that chart says i am overweight? i agree with what nature girl has to say. find a good weight where you feel and look good and stick with it. if everyone went by the BMI we would all look like a bunch of ethiopians -
First time camera guy ( my first pics) no deer
GreyGhost85 replied to apache12's topic in Trail Cameras
be patient young grasshoppa. you cannot give up on a spot after a week. I have honey holes that have been unproductive for a year or more, then they suddenly take off. placing a camera out 2 weeks before deer season and expecting results is a little too much to ask for. get multiple cameras and spread them out in a few square mile area, once you find what you are looking for, move your cameras into a smaller and smaller area until you have that specific buck's pattern figured out. patterning a big buck takes a lot of work. most of the mature deer I have on camera only come around every couple of weeks. I think they make big "loops " in certain area. pulling your camera premature can make you miss that one photo you need of the big old buck walking by. -
I know this is an old post, but is this blind still for sale?

Slick trick blade broke in foam target
GreyGhost85 replied to apache12's topic in Bows, arrows, broadheads
never had any issues with them at all. you probably had something in your target that it struck. possibly an insert, or maybe part of a lesser broadhead. your title is misleading, makes it sound like total broadhead failure when it was merely a chip -
I build cell phone towers for a living. there are plenty of cell phone sites on mount ord, i built some of them. the towers on ord, or any tower for that matter, should not in any way effect credit cards. They have nothing to do with anything on a tower

how is it any different than trapping a mouse, or shooting a prarie dog? i imagine that when you do either of those you don't feel such remorse? maybe it was a flying squirrel and he was just preparing it for liftoff?
