i trust my bow to drive an arrow through that quartering towards deer, but i would put my pin on the front half of his shoulder. i've shot 3 coues with a bow from the same angle. all made it less than 50 yards.

"standardization" and "socialism" are much the same, and you will probably not like most of the responses that are going to come from this topic, based upon the title alone. i do believe that hunting is becoming more and more of a rich-man's sport, but there is still plenty of opportunity for those willing to get out there, burn some bootleather and find quality animals. if someone finds a way to make a good living honestly and doing what they love, whether it be "saturating" an area with cameras or not, i am all for it. anyone that runs a fair amount of cameras, like myself, understands how much work and time you have to have invested in them. most of the time when an outfitter has really made a strong presence in an area, they are after one or two animals in particular, it's not like every animal on a trail camera is "sold" and harvested by some rich dude with a private jet.

to me it seems that all the different mountain ranges have their own, unique "subspecies" of coues deer that share similar traits such as antler configuration, color, weight, height. i have noticed that body sizes of similar age bucks can vary quite a bit from area to area. it might be due to the fact that a lot of coues deer populations are isolated and don't really overlap with eachother, whereas mule deer range overlaps throughout the southwest US. Deer are just like people, they do not all have to be the same size, color, etc. to be the same species

$50 makes something elitist? maybe G&F shoudl just stop charging anything to hunt? that way not only the rich people that can afford $50 can hunt. it can be a package deal with Obamacare

mechanical broadheads success and failures
GreyGhost85 replied to creed_az_88's topic in Bowhunting for Coues Deer
i have cleaned an elk or two, see my avatar. my family also used to run a very well known butcher shop in the heart of elk country. i am VERY familiar with elk anatomy. i have been on over 50 elk kills, and no matter where you hit an elk, minus a couple obvious spots, there should be more penetration out of a 70lb bow than that. i am by no way saying a shoulder shot should be lethal, or is in any way a lethal shot but, that was not a shoulder shot. -
go back to money up front, and comments like this ^^^^ will go away. i'm sorry, but if you can't afford $50 for deer, then you cannot afford to go on the hunt.

mechanical broadheads success and failures
GreyGhost85 replied to creed_az_88's topic in Bowhunting for Coues Deer
It looked to me like the shot was spot on. Not a shoulder shot. It doesn't matter where the hit was however, you should still get more than just a couple inches of penetration. Text book rage fail. -
I really hope you're kidding! Haha. With all the nonsense that's happening in this thread though, it would not surprise me if you weren't. If there was such a thing as grammar police, there would be a lot of people in jail right now!

Ummm, no it's not. Definitely they're.... Not sure where you went to school

always gonna be that "one" guy. "Just called, They're up!" would have been much more convincing. triple D bag

using the system is one thing, taking advantage of the system is different. using 4 grandparents to put in for tags for two kids? not cool, or fair to everyone else. there are already youth hunts that are very premium tags, and fairly easy to draw. this is a great advantage to our youth hunters. also, family members being able to donate tags is an advantage to youth hunters, but this does not mean that one should also take advantage of the system. it probably happens more often than we know, but most people have more tact than to brag about it, especially when he openly admits that he would not be able to afford it

i thought i was the only one that listened to these guys
-
my thoughts exactly. probably big supporter of Obamacare as well. too bad AZGFD doesn't accept EBT........
-
i wish i could have 4 people putting in for tags for me.....seems a bit unfair. i am all about giving children hunting opportunities, but this seems like taking advantage of the system to an extent. i wouldn't lose any sleep if you weren't able to afford to do that without the aid of credit cards. what would you do if all 4 of them drew tags? seems like a good chance that those tags would be wasted, which in turn takes that tag out of some deserving person's pocket.
-
yes it does. charge up front, or just don't call people if their cards get rejected. they alerady let you update your payment info. that should be enough

what a joke this is turning into. i feel bad for whoever draws an archery strip tag this year. congrats, here is your deer tag you have been waiting so long for! now, goodluck with your 3 weekends of scouting!

i've always used water softner salt. rock salt works pretty well also. i have noticed that cattle and horses sit on salt blocks a lot more than just a salt lick. salt blocks are more awkward to haul, and they stand out like a sore thumb to other hunters. it seems to me like the deer like the salt sites better after the salt has totally leached into the ground
-
salt licks do not become hot spots over night. it usually takes mine a year or so before they really become active. you will always get the occasional curious deer, but it takes quite some time for the deer to make the salt lick a part of their routine. the longer they are there, the better they get. you need to keep them fresh by packing in new salt a few times a year. also, stay out of the areas as much as possible, as increased foot traffic results in decreased game traffic.
-
sounds like you could have offset the price of the camera, with a new treestand. i had someone steal my sd card, then build a treestand out of wood over the salt. needless to say, the makeshift treestand came out of the tree in a lot of pieces

According to this sites Tony Mandile...trail cams are huntings next perversion you don't need to run your own trail cams when you pay for guided hunts. people don't want them banned, they just don't like that people other than their high priced outfitter, have enough ambition to get out there and set up their own cameras
-
it was a weasel. nothing more, nothing less. i've seen a dozen or so, and they can vary quite a bit in color with really any mixture of brown/yellow, turning white in the winter.

We're supposed to have no antler growth this year right?
GreyGhost85 replied to Shedhunteraz's topic in Trail Cameras
Man, that last bull has got to have close to 60" main beams. -
I'm pretty confident that all trail cam users, novice and seasoned, get a fait amount of pictures of themselves during setup. your camera should be able to take thousands of photos on a single SD card. unless it takes you half a day of tinkering to get it just right, don't worry about the few pics it might take of you in the process. personally I almost like that mine take photos of me setting them up. let's me know that they are working and taking photos before I walk away

I wish AZGFD would make expandable broadheads illegal for elk. stick with a standard, tough broadhead design. slick tricks are great. why shoot something that you cannot be 100% sure will do it's job on a tag that only comes around a few times in your lifetime? you have enough things working against you in the elk woods. you need to eliminate every potential problem that you CAN control. there are a million things that can go wrong that you do not have control over.

i picked up two of the stealth cam skout 7mp cameras and ran them. i could not be happier. they took great pictures and didn't seem to miss any animals. night pictures were good as well. one camera had 1500 pics, the other about 900. both still had full battery life. i picked them up on sportsmans guide for about $70 each. i'm going to have to pick up a few more
