Sold one of these a few years ago. Still regretting it. Someone will snag it up. Gotta love a 6.5 that will push 140’s 3200fps -

I did pretty good at big lake a couple weeks ago. The big one is 21”. All 16”+. Caught all cut throats

Killing a nice coues has always been something that has eluded me. I’ve killed a bunch of them over the years but never one that i would consider nice, or big. I have been fortunate enough to take some real good elk, mulies, antelope, bear, etc. but coues have always kicked my butt. Having killed 3 between 95-98” my goal is always to take a 100” buck. This year was no different. I’ve been chasing one particular buck for 3 years now but i have never seen him hard-horned. My goal was simple this year, kill that buck. I have hunted him endlessly through archery and rifle season with no luck. I spend a LOT of time scouting and running cameras so i know most of the deer that are in the area i hunt. As soon as the bucks shed their velvet this year, i lost track of all the “shooter” bucks i have been watching. I can’t for the life of me figure out where they go. Well, the opening morning of my rifle hunt rolled around and Jason, my brother and myself found ourself at our glassing point. Jason had a tag with me and my brother was there to help out. We started seeing deer right away but nothing special. After covering all the country in our immediate vicinity, my eyes started to wander to the country I’m sure we all look at with the thought of “why am i glassing so far away?” I mentioned to my brother that i could see a couple deer waaaaayyy out there and he told me pretty much what i was thinking to myself. Why the he!! was i looking over there. I figured i was looking at a couple does anyways, so i got back to glassing the more approachable country around us. A few minutes later my brother told me he spotted some more deer waaaay out there where i was looking and one looked like a decent buck. Not getting too excited, i pulled out the big eye and looked him over. He was a decent buck, but not what i was after. We kind of forgot about him and got back to business. A little while later someone was looking over him again and he seemed a lot bigger than we thought. Another look through the big eye confirmed there were two bucks. We could tell they were both at least decent with one being larger than the other. We watched the bucks bed and made a plan. Jason and i would make a very long and what should have been “low percentage” stalk to see how the bucks looked from much closer. The stalk worked out great. We found ourselves 450ish yards from the bedded bucks. After a quick look, i decided to try to shoot the bigger buck. A few minutes later he stood up and walked through a narrow shooting lane. I fired and the shot found it’s mark. Buck down. After the celebration ended we noticed the other buck was still standing there and Jason decided he was big enough. A few minutes and one shot later we had two bucks dead within feet of eachother. I never got a great look at the buck i shot i just knew had a good frame and could tell he had a bit of funk on his rack. When we got to the bucks, i was pleasantly surprised. He was not the buck i was after but he is one i could not pass. Jason’s buck was also a little better than we thought. Nothing like an opening morning double-down on a couple good bucks.

Nice buck! Congrats

Someone will buy the cape. You’re not doing anything wrong. Their going price is probably $80-$100 though. If it was tanned you could get more. A good bull elk cape will go for $200+.

The browning will be a lot lighter and probably better suited for hunting.

6.5 WSM load and new brass and more...
GreyGhost85 replied to Ernesto C's topic in Rifles, Reloading and Gunsmithing
Hornady ELD-M are great deer bullets. I shoot the 130’s out of my .264 wm and shoot the 120’s out of my GF’s creedmoor. I shot a coues a few days ago at 450 yards with my .264. Hit him pretty far back but the bullet still exited and it dropped him where he stood. -
I have the summit gtx. They seem to fit true. Great boots

Bears and missed shots/spooked
GreyGhost85 replied to BeardownAZ's topic in Black Bear or Grizzly Bear hunts
Bears are not at all like deer or elk. Their range is huge. Might move 10 miles in a day or more, just feeding. Watched a sow and a couple cubs move probably 2 miles in about an hour this weekend as well. They weren’t spooked or anything, they just move a lot. If i was a betting man, i would bet the worst place to look for a bear would be the last place you saw it -

I missed a bear saturday night and he left the country at about mach 12, if that helps. -
I’ve been using them for a few years. I can give any kind of reviews or field use updates that you want. They are a game changer

Those are the radios i run. If you have a line of site, you can talk for a loooong ways. I have noticed that when you are in trees with a thick canopy, like pine or spruce, they don’t work very well. They are about 100 times better than the talkabouts or any of that style of radio

It’s probably still fine. Make a boatload of green chili or tamales. Thats what i do any time i have meat i need to get rid of. Always good to have burritos in the freezer

Have some stihls and some husqis. I would put husqi over stihl currently

Good on you. Glad you went through Tom. What tag was it, if you don’t mind me asking?

Cabelas and Bass Pro is where i went when i was looking for my dad. They have a better selection than anyone else in town. Ended up ordering a PSE RDX 400 online though. Sweet shooting sucker. Amazing what those things can do

Nice job! Love this time of year when the kiddos are getting it done. Is it just me or does that coues buck have a really big body?
-
Like Beardown says, if you travel off the highway, you'll most likely need a permit. at least that's how it is on the san carlos and white mountain apache. You just have to have a license of some sort. Varmint, Fishing, Camping, etc.

*Bull Elk Blessing from donated tag, oh wait... aka Casey's favortism conspiracy theory post.
GreyGhost85 replied to hoghntr's topic in Elk Hunting
I am 100% for less fortunate people getting a chance at donated tags. The thing about the situation is though, some people have been able to make connections that put them at the front of the list. There is no governing body that selects who gets the tags. They get donated to a group and then they “select” who gets the tag. Mike, i am happy you killed an elk and antelope this year, i do believe you are a deserving recipient of a tag or two and i appreciate your service. The part that REALLY bothers me is you ate a strip tag this year, rather than having perhaps your only chance to really pay it forward for all the tags you’ve been donated over the years. One of your brothers in arms would have loved that tag. -
im gonna keep this one short and sweet, but there is something weird about this buck. I kicked him up opening morning when i was switching glassing spots. Gave me a pretty good look at him and my buddy and i both agreed he was a really big buck. I made a good shot with my .264 and put him down for the count. Getting down to him, his rack was nowhere near as big as we thought and thats when we realized he was about 70lbs live weight. Never seen anything like it. We took every single scrap of meat, heart and liver off of him and might have 30 lbs hanging, bone in. Just got done cleaning up his heart, tenderloins and liver when i noticed his liver is black like tar and smells awful! Not gonna eat it. Anyway, enjoy the pics. Real head scratcher. Anyone have any insight? Liver Hind quarter

Arizona Strip deer, rifle antelope, Unit 9 early rifle? Man, that’s a lifetime of tags all in the same year. -
The question is, who held it straight for him during the process?
