What rifle caliber is most common for coues deer hunting in AZ?
GreyGhost85 replied to THREEDFLYER's topic in Rifle hunting for Coues Deer
Where did all this about me shooting 650 yards with my rifle come from? And me needing a bigger rifle to shoot 650? I’m lost. I apologize to the flat brim gods. I will never insult the creedmoor again! -

I push 130’s at neary 3300fps out of my .264wm. I know everyone loves the 6.5cm, all that i am saying is a 120gn bullet at 2800 fps isn’t causing enough trauma for my liking. I know the argument is always “shot placement” but i like my rifles to kill even if shot placement is off a few inches. -

120 eldm and about 375. First shot was good. Just not enough “pop” to get the kind of trauma i look for. I’ve huntes with a .264wm most of my life and was thinking performance would be similar. Wasn’t. That extra 500fps+ really helps -

I shot a coues a few years ago with my 338 lapua. Cape was great. He even looks good on my wall. There was a lot of internal damage but all in the ribs. Not much wasted meat. Bought my GF a 6.5 cm last year and she killed a muley buck with it. Shoots great, but was not at all impressed with terminal performance. -
How do you nuke an old salt lick?
GreyGhost85 replied to mattys281's topic in Bowhunting for Coues Deer
Not sure pissing on it will do anything. Where I cut my teeth hunting there was always a big camp of guys in the same place every single year. They pissed in the same spot most of the time from what we could tell. Deer started hitting that piss spot and it became a kind of salt lick. Always use to jump deer off of it when we drove around the corner -

I like to haul 5 gallons or so of water into my salt licks to pour over the salt when it's dry and get it dissolved into the dirt. About 3 years ago I made the mistake of using an old empty gas can to haul my water in. I think just the tiny bit of gas smell left in the can drove the deer away. I did not have any deer hitting any of the salt licks I poured the water over for at least 6 months. I still feel like an idiot about that one -
I’m the tool? Lol. I knew that was coming. Just said what others are thinking. Good luck out there. Hard to be two places at once.

You got a donated lope and strip tag this year? I know you’re in a rough spot, but man....it seems like you of all people would know there are a lot of extremely deserving people out there that could hve put at least one of those tags to good use. Just seemed like it could have been a great opportunity to return the favor

The day is upon us! Let's hear the reports!
GreyGhost85 replied to broadhead's topic in Bowhunting for Coues Deer
I agree that they get water from browse, but there are too many deer, year round in the area for there not to be a water source nearby. I guess that’s why it’s called hunting. Back at it tomorrow -

You’re a better man than me. I know someone that had a guy take out their memory card and build a wooden, makeshift treestand on a salt lick. -

Well, today was just slightly more exciting. Few groups of does and one of the smallest bucks i’ve ever seen came in. At least the action was fairly consistent. No storm today. Looks like tomorrow the temp is gonna drop about 10°. Should get the deer moving. The labor day crowd has moved in. I’m far enough in where it shouldn’t impact me but i’d welcome a little disturbance at this point to get them moving around. More nice bucks hit again last night. Every buck that i figure is 5 years old or more seems to have gone 100% nocturnal. Spent the evening hiking out every drainage around my blind trying to find their water source. Still can’t find it. Closest permanent source is over a mile and about a 1,000’ elevation gain. I can’t imagine they all water there. Real head scratcher. -

Anything non oil based will wear off. You can buy mountain lion scent paste i’ve heard it keeps em off for a little while. -

Diesel is the answer. The more the merrier . Its mostly oil and it stays in the ground for a long time. Bleach or ammonia evaporates pretty soon and deer will come back. Don’t ask me how i know, just take my advice. -

Well, my hunch didn’t pay off. Back at er again in the morning. Storms movin’ in. Hopefully it gets them on their feet. They’re still hitting at night -

I'll post up some photos when I get better service. I have to hold my iPad above my head and in the corner of the blind to get enough service to post some updates for ya'll. The buck I'm after is pretty "special". If I can't get it done with a bow, I'll be back with a rifle in a couple months. Funny fact, he spends most of his time with a herd of muley bucks. I've seen his herd twice, but he hasn't been with them. And on a side note, scent killer works pretty well as a makeshift misting system -

Well, slowest day yet. One dinky coues buck came by about an hour ago. According to the camera, the deer activity seems to be picking up right before dark so I'm going to sit until dark tonight. 2, 150-160" muley bucks hit yesterday evening when I was away. Hope neither of them show up this evening, they're getting harder to pass up. Getting a little hotter each day. Weather is supposed to change a little bit tomorrow. I figured with the pressure dropping, they'd be more active today. Here's to hoping my hunch about evening activity pays off. 15 hours in this sauna isn't easy -

Yeah, it stays up. Swapping the cards every afternoon when i leave. Lots of night activity. Had somewhere between 12-15 bucks hit it last night -

Well, looks like I'm the only one updating this thread. Mainly out of boredom from the blind. Another day is about in the books. The wind starts swirling pretty bad at about 2:00 and I haven't had a deer hit this area past about 1:00pm in 6 weeks, so I pack 're in everyday at about 2-3. Had one decent 3 point muley come in at about 5:45am today is all. A couple guys on horseback with a couple cow dogs came through a couple hours ago. Didn't see the blind but I'm guessing it didn't help the deer movement. About 50 hours logged in this sweat box so far -
Awesome buck man. Congrats

Well, day 3 of the sit. Passed on 4 muleys yesterday, biggest was about a 20" 3-point. 3 more muleys passed again today. Biggest was a pretty nice 22" maybe 150" 4-point. Briefly thought about killing him the 2nd time he came back and stood at about 30 yards for 10 minutes. This big moon seems to have the bigger coues bucks off their pattern. 6 days left -

Been in the blind for about 8 hours today. Been slow. Happy to say the buck I've been after for 3 years now is back. Hopefully I catch him slippin'. -

I’ve grown to love early season archery. Gives you a chance to get a crack at bucks that are still on a pattern and haven’t been hunted in 7 months. Headed out Friday evening for 10 days. I’ve got a date with a giant buck that hit my camera. Hopefully i’ll have a story to report
