Using a bow during the general season
GreyGhost85 replied to capoeirajosh's topic in Rifle hunting for Coues Deer
Was this post to ask people's opinion, or just tell everyone you are going to archery hunt in rifle season? -
Nothing wrong with the crown. Rifle has a big brake on it. I scrubbed the heII out of it and have a replacement scope ready to try. Thanks for all the replys. Will updat once i find the culprit

I blew through my last bull shooting 390 grain arrow @325fps @ 70 yards. I think anything in the ball park of 400 grns is adequate for elk. I'm shooting 450 grains now and i don't like it. I'd rather have the extra speed. Gonna bump it back down around 400

The rifle is a 338 Lapua. Rings and base are tight. I shot it and even tried different torque settings. Whatever the problem is just happened all at once. It wasn't something that slowly happened like i figure a dirty barrel would do? I would try the "square" trick but it's all over the place. Hard to make a 4" square shooting 3" groups

the owner of Beeman drilling is also a big hunter. win win

How old were you when you started hunting big game?
GreyGhost85 replied to Zeke-BE's topic in The Campfire
Probably as soon as i could walk i started hunting small game. Tagged along with my dad on a LOT of big game kills before i was 10. Shot my first buck at 10. I am 31 now and have killed a deer every year but 1, along with a good amount of elk, antelope, bear, javelinas, turkey, etc. was pretty lucky being brought up the way i was -
That looks like a J34 and a helluva deal. Location?

Levers, i sure am envious of your gun collection. I recently inherited the same rifle with a 3-digit serial number. It's spent so much time in a saddle scabbord that the end of the barrel is nearly rubbed to a point. That one looks to have very high grade walnut. Sand those scratches out and give it a good oil rub and that will be one beautiful rifle

Some pics of a few nice rams to pass the time
GreyGhost85 replied to GreyGhost85's topic in Bighorn Sheep Hunting
I run a Zeiss Diascope 65mm T FL for my spotter and just my iPhone 6. The phone adapter is a universal one i got off amazon i think it's called a GoSky? it was only like $25 and I've been really happy with it. The lighting was great and the sheep weren't very far away and like all rocky mountain bighorns i've been around, they were not at all concerned with me. It made me look like a lot better photographer than i really am for sure. -

i can send pics of my tires when i get home later. they are the standard take offs from a new dodge diesel with factory chrome wheels and hubcaps. i believe they are firestone? standard street tread. less than 100 miles. drove it from the dealership to the tire shop for new wheels/tires. tires and wheels need to go together

I have a brand new set of take offs from a 2016 ram 2500 with wheels. I think the tires are 285x70x18?

I've always sliced the heart into thin pieces and fried it up the night of the kill. With the heart being the core of the animal, it seems fitting and we have always done it. I have never left a heart in a gut pile either. I love the way they taste, but honestly, I would still eat it even if it tasted bad.

great job. congrats. love to see the DIY guys get it done on big animals

Montana missouri breaks bighorn tag. Biggest rockies in the world. 190" ram is just an average sheep there

Anybody that says energy doesn't matter is outside of their mind. Would you rather get hit with a 100mph baseball or a 100mph bowling ball? The whole shot placement is king does matter, but energy=trauma=death. Just for the internet police here, not saying I condone it but i could gut shoot any coues out there with my lapua and it dies....nearly instantly. Same shot with other calibers, not so much.....i watched a big bull elk literally get his lung sucked through his diaphragm and poke out near the hip due to hydraulic pressure this year. I'm thinking a lesser cartridge would not do the same
