I HAVE THE VORTEX 15X50 HD BINOS AND LOVE THEM. THE REASON I WENT WITH THEM OVER THE KIABABS AND THE SWAROS IS PRICE AND WEIGHT. WITH THAT SAID.....I HAVE LOCATED DEER SEVERAL TIMES IN THE PAST FEW YEARS AND NEEDED A BETTER LOOK BEFORE COMMITING TO HIKE CLOSER. I DONT REALLY WANT TO PACK AROUND A SPOTTING SCOPE IN COUES DEER COUNTRY SO WHATS LEFT? IM THINKING A DOUBLER. HAS ANY ONE HAD ANY EXPERIENCE WITH THEM? OR WHAT DO YOU USE IN THIS SITUATION? THANKS JS

Are bipods really worth the extra weight?
AZ_SAWBUCK replied to AZ_SAWBUCK's topic in Rifles, Reloading and Gunsmithing
Thanks for all the info. Looks like these things are easy to take on and off the stock of a rifle. I thought you had to drill holes in the stock to mount them. I just have one more question........can you still mount a sling on the rifle with a bipod mounted? If so what brands or setups have you guys used? -
I think he is just over 90" when these pictures were taken. Good tine length....... with a little mass and new growth he should be close to 100". Good luck!

Which rifle for a youth hunter?
AZ_SAWBUCK replied to SteveKDC's topic in Rifles, Reloading and Gunsmithing
I also went on a couse deer hunt with my friend in 24b last year, and he drilled his deer in this bed at 508 yards with a .243 (140g bullet). So yes you can reach out there with a .243 if you know what you are doing. JS -
Which rifle for a youth hunter?
AZ_SAWBUCK replied to SteveKDC's topic in Rifles, Reloading and Gunsmithing
I have a friend who took his 10 year old boy on his firse couse deer hunt last year. He dropped a deer at 423 yards with a .222. He told me he wanted to teach his boys to shot right and not be afraid of the recoil so he started them shooting a smaller caliber. My choice would be a .223 or a .243, bullets are cheap and they are both good calibers to start out on in my opinion. JS -
You did the right thing. I have heard several stories just like yours where those little guys courious.

I am curently shoping for a good scope to top the .300 win mag that I am having built. I have had several people tell me to go with a higher power scope right off the bat. I think Im going to go with a Zeiss Conquest 6.5-20X50 or a Vortex Viper PST 6-24X50. The only thing is I have not talked to anyone who has the Vortex scope. Good Luck.

Help wanted! Opinions of this buck
AZ_SAWBUCK replied to shylopolito's topic in Coues Deer Hunting in Arizona
Thats a beauty of a buck. Sweet tine length and basket! Im going to guess he should score better than 115". Good luck in August! -
The way I see it we live in The United States of America and one of our rights is to be able to cary a fire arm. If you want to hike in the winderness and cary a rifle it shouldnt matter if you have a tag that is filled or no tag at all. I always have a Lion tag because you never know when tou might glass up one of those Coues killers. Sure if you are hiking around during hunting season with a rifle and no tag the Game and Fish is probably going to give you a hard time but. I dont think they can legally do anything about it unless they have proof that you are attempting to poach.

Solo hunt in the Matazels sounds like a blast. Nice pictures too boot. Congrats JS.

Lots of good info here. Seems like I have had more luck at finding pigs by really picking apart the bottoms of draws and washes while glassing. Good luck. JS

The mom is not super tall Id say her back is about 2.5 feet off the ground about 50 pounds. The dad on the other hand is a good sized lab he tipps the scale at 77 pounds. Id say at the looks of this pup at full maturaty she will end up right in the middle of the two average size for a lab. The pup is located in East Mesa.
