Do some javi stink more than others?

I can't speak to scientific fact, but my crew has probably shot about a dozen javelin over the past few years. I would estimate they were probably 50/50 boars to sows. Every boar we have shot had a much stronger odor than any of the sows. The meat also tends to be a bit stronger with boars. But if you clean them carefully and not touch hide than meat (I always go through multiple pairs of gloves as well), it really is excellent high quality meat. With the lingering smell the next day, it is highly likely that the herd (or at least part of the herd) returned to the spot. I have a video of several javelina returning to a dead pig my hunting buddy's son shot, and lay down and bed next to it. My son then shot one. I'll see if I can find the video.

I need your vote! (THE FINAL PUSH!!!)

Yes, there are 3 categories. The first three pictures are in the general outdoors category, the second group of three pictures is in the fishing category, and the final three (including mine) are in the hunting category. There will be a winner for each category.

I promised I'd show some pictures of working on my euro using the maceration technique suggested to me by Heather and Dale. The general idea is to let the bacteria found in water do the job that beetles or simmering might do. You don't have to mess with beetles and avoid the heat and detergents used in simmering. So I filled a 5 gallon bucket up with very green pond water (loaded with bacteria), dropped my lion skull in after I had removed the eyes, brain, and the meat easily removed with a knife, and lastly sealed the bucked up and left it in my garage (warmer than the backyard). Skip ahead two weeks when I first opened the bucket. The smell was INSANE!!! Maybe the worst smell I have even experienced, but most of the meat had been eaten away by the bacteria. I stick it back in the bucket for a couple more days till the weekend to seal in the smell till I could take it to the desert (away from the neighborhood) to dump the water and rinse the skull in another bucket of soapy water. I then brought it home and rinsed it off under normal hose water pressure. Doing that alone probably removed 95% of the meat and tissue. I did have to hit it with the pressure washer to remove a few stubborn bits. I have now had is soaking in a cold peroxide bath since last weekend to whited and deodorize. When that is done I will start the degreasing and ultimately finish by gluing all the teeth back in. The maceration process definitely has its advantages and seems to have worked extremely well. However, due to the absolute awfulness of the smell, we will probably only use it certain occasions with certain animals. For my son's euro business he will be sticking with the regular simmering process. *Side note, after taking the skull out of the nasty water for the final time, I made the mistake of holding it in my bare hands (see pictures of me holding and washing it below). DON"T DO THIS!!! It took me 20+ hand washings over 3 days before I couldn't smell that smell on me hands anymore. After two weeks in the bucket After 2.5 weeks and rinsing off with the hose and normal hose pressure.

Bumping back up to the top with video two, my favorite one! My son, Draysen, was filming. He may have been more excited than me and was so worried about my nerves getting the best of me, that he coached me through the whole thing. He hates this video, but I love it! Please keep to votes coming! https://youtu.be/Svvu8Vz3MRA

So were we. The shot was about as perfect as could be (no shortage of humility here 🤣). Took out the heart cleanly. Draysen, my son, bought me a pack of Vortex mechanicals (Steve Ward's broadheads) for Christmas. I had heard great things and had been wanting to try them for a while. Extremely impressed so far! I've shot two animals now with them, the lion and a javelina a few weeks ago. The javelina died crazy fast! I saw the herd on a ridge and did a circle around them to get in front of the slow moving herd, and to get the wind perfect. I had this really old boar walk into 5 yards before he cleared a bush and I shot him. He took about a half step backwards after the hit and fell over dead within 6 inches of where I hit him, Crazy! Exit hole on the lion.

LOL, you've got me! I've still got more pictures, a longer video, and some cool skull cleaning pictures using a new technique suggested by Heather of Wild Heritage Taxidermy fame. They are doing my mount. So keep the votes coming...

Anyone from the east valley headed that way?

    Sold

This is a solid head! I have tried at least a dozen different heads over the past 8-10 years, and for someone wanting to mount a big spotter, rifle saddle, etc. (in addition to regular binos), this is the best of any I have tried. It is basically just a size up (larger) from the extremely popular VA-5. I'd be awfully tempted to jump on this if I didn't already have one... Where are you located?

    Dead On Taxidermy????????????

Bringing this back up. Anyone hear from or talk to Kevin from Dead on Taxidermy? My buddy took his son's first buck to him about 14 months ago. He said he was told by Kevin in mid November of 2020 that the buck would be done in two weeks. Since then Kevin has been MIA and not returning calls.

Go buy some groceries and commodities

Christmas present for the wife several years ago. Will hold 14 quart sized jars, but it cost a few pennies.

Go buy some groceries and commodities

We should start a thread about the best conspiracy theories you are hearing. My mom sent me a great one the other day (she is a nutty as the come). Via Facebook Messneger video: Currently the government is flying planes at high altitude with special radar/x-ray type equipment that will not only allow them to see into each individuals house, but will identify and document any firearms by type. In the very near future the military will be going door to door with their list to search/confiscate all of the the firearms, and make arrests for a failure to surrender everything on the list. To beat the radar your firearms need to be buried at least 6 feet deep.

Nothing to do with the craziness going on, but I found boneless skinless chicken breasts today at $42 for a 40 pound box. Picked up 80 pounds and am helping to wife can/bottle chicken today. https://www.usfoods.com/why-us-foods/chef-store/tempe.html

    Portable shooting bench—75$

I've always been curious how solid/stable these are. Much wobble/movement in them?
  25. Yes, you read it correctly, I am actually looking to sell bullets, and insanely enough, for what I paid for them! (Clearly I DON'T know what I have. 🤣) These are not loaded factory ammo, just the bullets for reloaders. I have been looking for them for several months and finally found some. I had to buy 4 boxes to get free shipping, but only need 1. Another is already spoken for, so I have 2 left up for grabs. My cost was $41.99. With tax, they were a hair over $45.00. So that is what I need per box. Pick up is in Queen Creek. I really don't want to go to the hassle of shipping, but will on your dime. Thanks
