Thanks, the highlight for me was the elk in the bottom picture. I was standing behind some trees about 15-20 yards from our Tahoe. My wife asked me to try to get him to turn and look at us. I have an elk bugle ring tone on my phone so I walked in front of the Tahoe, started raking a tree, and calling to him with the ringtone. He turned and studied me for a minute, probably not sure what to think. After a few moments he started bugling back. We had quite the conversation going for a few minutes before he eventually took his cows and disappeared into the trees. I had never before experienced anything like that within 20 yards!

Awesome bull! What a great experience to share with your wife. I'm trying to get my wife into hunting, she put in for the first time this year. Thanks for sharing the pictures and story!

Congrats on a great hunt. Can't wait till my son can start putting in to hunt with me. Only 2 more years!

Costco sells their own brand of Sweet Mesquite dry run seasoning. I have found that mixing this with some soy Worcestershire sauce and brown sugar makes a great sweet and spicy jerky marinade. My kids can't get enough of it.

Most, of my cousins, grandparents, aunts, uncles, etc live the Idaho Falls vicinity. My parents were born and raised there and moved my family down to AZ when I was 8. I try to take my own family up there each year for a week to visit family. It seems to be my wife and kids favorite place to vacation. If I were to ever leave AZ, Idaho would be my fist choice of places to move to. Beautiful area and a sportsman's paradise!

My family and I made the 14 hour trek this weekend from Queen Creek, AZ to Idaho Falls, I'D. Tonight my cousins and I headed up for some brown fishing on the south fork of the Snake River near the Idaho/Wyoming border. It was a fantastic evening! I finished the evening with about 18 fish. Most in the 2-3 pound range. I was fortunate enough to get a couple 4 pounders (one of which is in the picture below) and a fat 6 pounder. Nothing like Idaho brown fishing!

Can't find any trout fishing in AZ that can come anywhere close. I've tried.

I'd agree with everyone here. The .243 is an excellent deer round, especially if you are comfortable and accurate with it. Not that I would do it myself, but I have seen elk taken with a .243. A 100 grain Nosler BT or Barnes would be my round of choice for your hunt. Good luck!

You all are much more patient than I. I don't think I could have stopped myself from shooting this bull. I'd estimate him in the 340 range, but am certainly no expert.

Applicants are needed for the Game and Fish Commission.
rossislider replied to archerycrazy's topic in The Campfire
To bad no one is needed from Maricopa county. I for one would gladly switch to independent to get another rational thinking non hippy on the commission. -
Could be the guy with the STOLEN spark plug was somehow disabled and had permission to have the quad back there. Guess that's why it isn't our job to be the law enforcers out there...

One of the things I have always loved the about hunting is they way most hunters are so great about looking out for each other and the brotherhood that there seems to be in the field. However m77, the various posts of yours I have read really make me question the type of hunter and "sportsman" you are. Hope to never meet up with you in the field...

Travel management - what are YOU going to do?
rossislider replied to mtn-memories's topic in The Campfire
Go to a Forest Service Office and you can get them there. I went to the one on 23st and McDowel in Phoenix and picked both of them up. They are free. The Coconino Map measures 33"x55" and is double sided with North on one side and south on the other. Thanks -
Travel management - what are YOU going to do?
rossislider replied to mtn-memories's topic in The Campfire
Where can I find the Travel Management Plan for a specific area? I am not overly familiar with them, but it sounds like I need to be. -
I agree with this. I have found that the opening weekend of the late hunts are packed with hunters. Come Monday the numbers of hunters in the field drops substantially. I personally would be hesitant to shoot anything much lower than 300ish until later in the hunt. I shot this guy below on Saturday of the opening weekend, last year during unit 1's late rifle hunt (same bull as in my profile picture). He is probably right around that 300 range. There are plenty of good bulls out there in the late hunts if you will work for them. Remember, the 400's shot next year had to be around somehere during the previous year's late hunts.

I was in a pretty bad ATV accident during the early part of this past summer. It has been a few months now and, with surgery and lots of physical therapy, my leg/knee have come a long way. It's time to start looking into what it will take to repair my ATV. The ATV is a 2005 Polaris Sportsman 700 There does not seem to be any damage to the engine. It appears to start and run fine, as does the winch on the front which was used to help get it out of the forest. The primary damage is on the front end from the impact with a rather large tree trunk. If you or someone you know does this kind of repair work for a reasonable price, and could help get me an estimate of what this kind of repair might cost, please PM me. Thanks

One of the coolest looking bulls of the season! -
I've shot several Schwackers through mesh and it didn't seem to affect the flight.
-
I think this is the bull in question...

3 years??? Who did you use?

Sounds like a great hunt. Hope things go well today.

Awesome mount! Getting a bobcat is one of my hunting goals this winter. Haven't had much luck with the bobcats thus far.

Congratulation! I never get tired of seeing these amazing animals. -
Kudos for you too Michael (huntitup) for all you did to help out a fellow hunter. Hope I have the opportunity someday to follow your example.

Awesome experience! Sounds like a week in heaven. Congrats!
