Long/Shorty Backpack Hunt
rossislider replied to WHT_MTNMAN's topic in Coues Deer Hunting in Arizona
Sounds exhausting and memorable. Congratulations to both of you. -
Just loading up our truck now so we can head out at soon as my son gets out of school. Our party will be staying at a place in Heber (3A/3C). I told my hunting party that is coming to help out my son to just come along, have a good time, and I would supply all the food, snack, etc (sorry no alcohol). As I load up this stuff I am realizing I bought about 4 times the amount of crap we could possibly hope to eat. If any of you are in the area and feel like joining in our hunting festivities, give me a shout.

You've also got an open invite to join our party up in 3A/3C for Draysen's deer hunt.

Sven Eberson out in west Phoenix is a fantastic bird guy and I believe also does small game. If you are looking to stay local, he is your guy. I know a lot of guys on here use him. http://www.wildlifewings.com/welcome.html -
He guys, my son asked me to share a few picture from the bulls he recently completed. Also, after a long talk this weekend, we came to an agreement and he asked me to share the following: I want to thank everyone for their business and trust in me. You have sent me as many bulls the past couple of weeks as I can handle. The hard thing about big bulls is they demand immediate attention since I can't fit anything much bigger than a rag horn in my freezer, and they start to go bad quick if not kept cold. I'll be out helping on an elk hunt next weekend with my dad, and on my own deer hunt to following weekend. Since school, homework, baseball practice, Boy Scouts, etc. largely limit me to working on skulls on weekends, and since bulls take such a large block of time and attention, I unfortunately can't handle any more bulls for a couple of weeks. I am so sorry, but I have lots of taxidermist friends throughout the state that I am happy to refer you to. Please don't hesitate to send me anything deer size, cow elk size, or smaller, they will fit in my freezer no problem. Thanks everyone and good luck out there! As much as he would love to keep working on every bull you could possibly send him, we have had to set a few few ground rules to limit his skull cleaning on weeknights so his homework/grades to get neglected and so that he still has some fun kid time. It is a hard lesson in priorities for a kid making very good money for someone his age. He has had to turn down 6 bulls in the past few days Thanks for your understanding guys.

Queen Creek or Tempe for drop off and pick up. Sorry, I just cleaned out my inbox. Thanks Here are a few more from this past couple of weeks, one Coues buck from a youth hunt, a Wyoming goat (minus the horn sheaths), his friend's very unique bull, and a Kiabab brute.

Congrats guys! That is awesome.

I have it on good authority that they tagged out this morning.

I ordered an Icon Pro from Kuiu a few years ago. When I received it I wasn't impressed with the workanship. The webbing wasn't melted properly on the ends and was frayed in several areas. Not something I couldn't easily fix but I was disappointed in the quality and workmanship. I emailed customer support to let them know of my disappointment and received a response that left me feeling that they could cared less. I sold the pack and am now pretty anti Kuiu for this and a number of other reasons. I saved up (they aren't cheap) and just got a Kifaru Reckoning pack. It just arrived last week so I haven't had it in the field. But I stuffed it and walked around in it for a while. So for I love it. Most comfortable pack I have ever put on especially with some weight in it. Their staff is awesome and supper helpful too. It takes a few weeks from the time you order till you get your pack, because they build it for you (with your specs) after you order it. But they don have the Kuiu green cow camo pattern. 😂 (Told you I'm a hater)

Good luck to all the youth hunters headed out in the morning on deer and cow hunts with parents, grandparents, friends, etc up in the northern units. Can't wait to start seeing all the pictures flood in. My son had this cow hunt last year and we had a blast! These early youth cow and deer hunts up north in the mild weather with the changing leaves and seasons are about as much fun as it gets. Wish we here headed up.

Last I heard the Mormon church only composes about 18% of the organization and has already started the process of withdrawing from the BSA.

Since I read about this earlier today, I've had a hard time putting into words my frustration and anger with this once great organization. I've been involved with scouting since well before I was old enough to be a cub scout at eight years old. I used to go to meetings and on campouts with my dad when he was a scoutmaster. I have worked with the organization is some capacity ever since. My disgust is not necessarily about this most recent change, but about the direction the organization has taken over the past few years. To me, being a scout and an eagle scout does not have the meaning it once did. The Boy Scouts used to stand for honor, morals, integrity, etc. But time and time again they are moving further from their core principles. An organization like the BSA needs to be a "lighthouse" for these young men. strong an immovable in the values and beliefs. Instead they have become a ship on the water that is tossed about and changes direction every time the political or social "wind" blows. I spoke with my wife a short time ago and shared my feelings with her. She and I are in complete agreement. My oldest son (13 years old) is about to receive his "Life" rank. Tonight we will be sitting down with him to talk and letting him decide if he wants to continue on to his "Eagle" or pull out of all BSA related activities. If he does chose to continue in scouting, I will support and encourage him as a parent but then I am done. So many boys in our society need an organization like what the BSA used to be. Few get the exposure to the outdoors and types of activities that the BSA can offer. Fortunately for my children, they get more of this in our family than the BSA could ever offer. But I feel terrible for those young men who don't have such a family structure and lifestyle. It scares the heck out of me for the future.

If it is a good spot with lots a glassable country, I've sat sun up to sun down without moving. I've had it payoff at last light before, so I am very slow to give up on a spot.

My hunting partner went two for two on javelina this year with one in January and this one today. Next up for him, mule deer in three weeks. I don't draw tags, but he is kind enough to let me tag along. Video posted here: https://www.facebook.com/sean.hatch.9/videos/1685996648091580/ He was insistent that for the first time, he carry his animal off the hill all by himself. There were no complaints or arguments from me!

Nice! Love the part about the truck left idling at the side of the road with doors open. I've been there more than once running after something into the forest or desert.

That's pretty awesome! Congratulations.

We got out soon to be 9 year old daughter a 22LR for her birthday. Yep, that is what she said she wanted! Hopefully we'll get a couple thousand rounds though it in preparation for next year. I believe in getting them practicing with something similar to what they will be using in the field, so we got her a compact bolt action Ruger American. I need to find a relatively inexpensive scope for it. I'd like to find something with variable magnification but don't want to spend what I am seeing for most of them. Anyone have anything or what might you recommend? Thanks

Miller's Southwest Meat Processing should have a drop-off trailor in Forest Lakes.
-
Exactly!!! The truck was only 1/4 mile away (we glassed them in the shade under a big mesquite tree while headed to the truck to move on to plan B ). So I wasn't to concerned about it being in that bag for long.

That is some great draw luck!. My son has a southern youth tag that opens tomorrow. Packs are loaded and we are ready to roll out!
