Who else is going out this weekend?

It's pig and deer season? Some of the southern youth deer hunts open tomorrow, and some of them allow you to purchase a youth javelina companion tag if drawn for deer. The weather is warm, but having both tags in your pocket can make for a fun hunt for the youngsters.

Who else is going out this weekend?

Draysen and I will be out chasing stink pigs in 33. Maybe a deer too, but only if he is a giant.

    Any luck in 3a3c

Don't want to leave you all hanging, so I'll let you know our young hunter found a VERY unique bull he wanted to shoot this past Monday night. I'll leave it at that till the dad can tell the story when ready.

Topped last year. (Updated with Video)

Great job! Draysen came running to me with his phone the other day to show me the pictures. He was very impressed.

    NUT JOB

I really hate to say this, but I stopped by Sportsmans this morning to pick up my daughter's birthday present just as they were opening. There were several guys rushing to the ammo and filling shopping carts with thousands of rounds, primarily 223 and 556. Hope this nonsense isn't starting again.

Junior cow elk hunt 3a 3c

It is a great youth hunt. Definitely talk to Flatlander. I was up there this weekend and looked over more cows than I could count. Which weekend is the hunt this year? I will be there a couple of weekends this month scouting for the deer hunt and might be able to throw some tips your way.

    Any luck in 3a3c

We had a rough day today with our young hunter. The winds got bad and the few bulls we saw were pretty busted up. Saw a a nice shooter yesterday morning but we couldn't get it to come together. Then in the afternoon yesterday we saw a real nice inline 7x7 (or so we thought) at 1200 yards. We got to 500 and sat on him for 3 hours waiting for him to come out of the jack pines. Once we got a good view we saw a busted off 5th and 6th so let him walk. We have seen a pile of bulls the last two days, but very few that aren't broken. Our little 12 year old tag holder is a trooper, so we will keep at it.

Sitting around the campfire up in 3C right now. One of the luck little guys in this picture has a tag for the rifle hunt in the morning.

A Few Fresh Bull Euros From My Son

LOL, yeah, unfortunately he has had a fare share of maggots. We just do what we can and try to get rid of the nasty smelly bits as quick as we can before the neighbors get a whiff and complain. When they arrive at the door that way, we know they need to be in the pot within the hour. There have been several discussion between us about applying a "hazmat" fee when they arrive extremely "ripe". We are really trying to minimize the late weeknights that this causes. The two bigger bulls above weren't terrible yet, but were on their way south and had plenty of maggots already when they showed up around 5:30 one evening. By the time they were simmered and the meat was cleaned off enough to where we could call in a night, it was close to midnight.

Why would he pay someone when he gets free labor from dad??? We should really have "parent labor laws".

    Mount Hanging Tips?

I already have nightmares about this exact thing happening with my kids. You aren't helping.

    Mount Hanging Tips?

Like others have said, I would use a big 3-4 inch lag bolt deep in the stud for your ram or anything on the larger side (larger than a deer shoulder mount). A full grown man could swing from this setup. For anything deer shoulder mount size and smaller you would be fine with some heavier dry wall anchors if there isn't a stud where you want to hang it. For example, my 6x6 bull uses a lag bolt, and I have several deer (mule and Coues) and antelope on 75 pound dry wall anchors. My heaviest deer mount is about 15 pounds.
  16. With the weather finally starting to cool off in the valley (it was in the high 60's this morning when I left for work YAHOOOO!!!), we want to put in a security screen door at our house so my wife will let me keep the door open in the morning. We would like to do something a little nicer that the $150 -$250 stock variety at Home Depot so may look at some of their semi-custom options or even some screen door companies. But before we start making calls and begin looking, I was wondering if any CWT members have or work for a security door company, or have any recommendations for a good quality door, company, etc. We live in the Queen Creek (south east valley) area. Thanks

    Polaris Ranger Questions, aftermarket seats

I don't mean to hijack you post, but I think this might be relevant for you. I keep hearing there is a push to ban seats in the bed of Rangers for safety reasons. Does anyone have information about this?

    Tag Donation

^^^If anyone knows how to do it, it will be Tom at H4H. This late, I doubt you will get any points back. I think the PointGuard program requires the tag be surrendered prior to the close of business the day prior to opening day of that hunt. But at least a vet would be able to use the tag.
  19. I'd triple check you scope mount setup. I've had issue in the past with the scope mounting work done at Sportsman's Warehouse. They motivated me to get my own setup, and I now mount and do all of my own scope work. Several years back I had them put a scope on a 7-08 I bought for my son. I went out to the range and shot it. I was having problems similar to yours, and after about 10 rounds the recoil from the rifle caused the scope to go flying several feet in front of the shooting bench into the dirt. Fortunately the scope glass was fine with a few minor cosmetic bumps on the body. I wasn't very happy and took it back down to Sportsman's the following week. A different guy was there this time. He apologized and remounted it. That weekend I went shooting again, and again was having grouping issues with the first few rounds. I checked the scope and it was completely loose and about to come off again. I borrowed some tools from a guy at the range and put t back on myself. It has now been several years and my scope hasn't budged since that day. Lesson learned. I like Sportsman's Warehouse and still shop their regularly, they are definitely the best of the big three. But like the saying goes, If you want something done right, do it yourself.

Game processor in Show low ?

If you are up in unit 1, you might also check Rusty's Meat Shop in Springerville. I do my own meat so can't tell you much about them, but I have a buddy that uses them. Miller's Southwestern Procesing in Queen Creek/San Tan Valley will also probably have a drop off trailer in Forest Lakes.
  21. I've never set a trail camera out before but have really enjoyed looking over the photos friends have shared with me over the years. I'm thinking about getting and setting a couple out. I'd kind of like to hear from some of you about best practices for setup and attaching to a tree. I read another archived thread about the setup, but it didn't really go into methods for attaching. Wires, bungees, lag bolts with bear boxes, cables, etc., what do you guys do? Side note, I know these things get stolen all the time. That is why I will go into it half expecting it. So I would really prefer to not go down that rabbit hole on this post and have it get ugly, like those threads usually do.

    Honda Vs. Champion Generator

As far a quieting down a generator goes, as a boy scout I had a scout leader with a very loud generator (this was about 25 years ago). He would bring it from time to time on outings. Along with it he would bring some of the pink wall insulation and wrap around the side of the generator facing camp and a piece for above. The back side would be open so the generator could breath and get air. It made a pretty big difference in the amount of noise we heard in camp.

Security Screen Door or Company Recommendations?

Definitely, the weather stripping is a big part of why we don't want a cheap one.

    Honda Vs. Champion Generator

I don't know much about Champion. But as far a dependable low maintenance engine goes, Honda is pretty much in a league of it's own. I've had an EU2000 for about 10 years. I change the oil annually with Mobil1 10w30, but have never had to do much else. It still starts up every time I pull the string.
