Depending on the unit, you can guaranty yourself an archery tag with 10-13 points. So I guess once you get to that threshold you just have to make a decision on how much longer you're willing to wait. Guaranteed rifle tags take 21 or more points.

The common theme here seems to be "how much."

How much for the bullets?

ML HELP NEEDED PLEASE
1uglydude replied to Flatlander's topic in Muzzleloader hunting for Coues Deer
Is the base one of the older-style weaver type bases CVA used to put on their muzzleloaders? I have a CVA Axis and, unbeknownst to me, the base worked itself loose on BOTH the muzzleloader barrel and the .223 barrel. I switched over to the integrated one piece ring and base set they offer now and haven't had a problem since. -
That's what I thought. It seemed like there was a thread hi-jack here. Good luck to both of you on your hunts.

I didn't realize Idaho had a unit with only 75 tags a mere 2 hour drive from the Phoenix and Tucson metro areas. ID has lots of controlled hunts that you can apply for for a mere $15 application fee after license. If you don't draw you can hunt general season and see far fewer folks than you would on a public land antelope hunt in AZ that has just 15 tags. Grab a $200 round trip from Allegiant and you are in business. Its actually pretty do able. The point is people figure stuff out, no big deal. You're right. It's totally the same thing. My bad. The irony in your suggestion is that I'm stuck in a La Quinta Inn in Provo tonight because Allegiant Air's plane broke down on the runway. Now I get to burn a vacation day tomorrow that I could have used on a crappy OTC hunt out of state to sit and watch the clouds of Mosquitos blow in from Mud Bay. At today's luggage rates on Allegiant, what would it cost me to fly a cow elk home from Idaho? $400-500?

Not trying to make you feel bad, just commenting on why you never hear guys talking about them. Once you get hooked on them and then end up without a tag one year, you'll understand. I know of at least 7 guys from this forum who hunt it, and not one of us has ever reported on it or posted any photos. If you get a tag, send me a PM. I'm more than happy to share information...in private. :-)

They have been getting harder and harder to draw each year (used to be over the counter even) since folks won't quit taking about them on hunting forums. If you go and have a good time, then you may want to keep that in mind.

That happens because they do not reuse tag numbers when a tag is rejected for a bad credit card or when a leftover tag has to be pulled for a bad check.

Where do you store your tag before hunting season?
1uglydude replied to CouesWhitetail's topic in The Campfire
I know you can purchase a duplicate license but I don't think you can replace a lost tag. I believe if you lose your tag you're SOL. Nope. You can replace a tag for the $4 fee as well. We have done it more than once. Take a look at the lower leftside box on non-permit tags (where the dealer punches a hole depending on the type of tag). You'll see there is a $4 duplicate sale option. One year when my FIL needed one the folks at Sportsmans insisted that they were not allowed to do it. We walked over to Walmart and had it done and then had the Department call Sportsmans to set them right. -

bigorange, why wouldn't you just purchase a duplicate tag for $4? or whatever they cost. I should know how much they cost, I've bought one or two. Exactly. It costs you $4 and about 5 minutes at any WalMart or other license dealer. We got a replacement for my BIL at close to midnight one night before his hunt. -
Make sure you get him the companion javelina tag. My little sister in law had that junior muzzy tag a few years ago. When the only buck we saw during the hunt gave us the slip, we were able to keep her interest by shifting to the pigs. Kinda cool to be hunting the only exclusively "muzzleloader" javelina tag in the state, and in December too.
-
I don't understand. Are you saying that you were on the application with the original poster, and that you guys didn't get the tag he thought you got. Or, are you talking about your own situation, separate and apart from his? To the response above about drawing the 23 Dec. tag with only 2 points, yes that is possible and happens all the time for residents, but a non-resident can only draw quality deer hunts by picking up one of the first half of the bonus tags offered in the bonus pass...which in this case meant having 11 bonus points.
-
Did you also note the season change? HAM javelina hunts will now be left open one extra day to allow for hunting through Presidents' Day.

The top of Four Peaks is wilderness. I don't believe there are any towers up there.

257 weatherby load question
1uglydude replied to 257 STW's topic in Rifles, Reloading and Gunsmithing
I don't think they offer the 115gr in a tipped tsx anymore. Personally, I shoot the 100gr tipped tsx with good results from both H1000 (72gr) and IMR7828ssc (70gr) out of a 26" 700 CDL. -
My buddy needs Retumbo. I have H1000. I'll check with him to see how badly he needs it. If he wants it, I can make a trade happen for at least one can.

Never been a problem for us. You can still hear someone speaking right next to you, even with earplugs in.

I don't hunt deer the same way as quail, so I always have time to add ear protection before the shot. It's usually the same way with elk. I just keep the loose foam ones in my pocket on most hunts, but I have kids keep the kind with the hard plastic band and foam ends around their necks after we make a spot. If a shot has to be rushed, the kid shouldn't be taking it anyway. Last season I took an elk with an off-hand 150-yard shot in the timber. I wasn't expecting to run into him. That was the first big game animal I have ever taken without the use of hearing protection. I won't take a gun with a muzzle brake on a hunt just on the off chance I don't have time to protect my ears before the shot. An occasional shot with a non-brake muzzle doesn't worry me much, but I don't want to risk my ears by taking an unprotected shot with a brake.

This was the championship for the Intermediate (50/70) Division.

That's interesting info, how did you find that out? Checking account that the leftover fees were paid on was compromised after the fact. They explained the process to me so I could make sure that certain check numbers weren't cancelled too early. Wells Fargo won't leave single checks open if they know a whole book is missing, even if you can give them check numbers. Luckily my FIL drew the 24a leftover, which has a lower hunt number and was in the first batch sent through, so I didn't have to wait quite as long for the check to clear. Trying to get through to someone to discuss my problem was a real pain the butt with every nervous Nellie calling minutes after the leftover process began to find out if they were drawn. The gatekeepers were completely fed up with all the pointless phone calls coming in.
-
They batch their check deposits by hunt number. The higher your hut number the longer it will take to see your check cashed. The first batch went out on Tuesday. It included my FIL's check for hunt #1089. As of yesterday afternoon they were up to the low 1100's. They expected to have all deposits in by COB tomorrow.

I have the exact same rifle, but I have only ever shot handloads out of it. Mine likes the 129 gr Barnes LRX using 61.4gr of Reloader 17. Groups one inch at 200 yards. Chronographed speed over three different machines is 3350 fps. The groups opened up a bit when I added powder and I started seeing pressure signs at 61.9 to 62 grains.
