From what I understand, and it's been a few years so my memory is a bit fuzzy, there is a separate administrative quota for bears killed through lethal removal and/or roadkill. If that quota is exceeded, then they will start to chip away at the hunt harvest quota.
-
Those of us who spot and stalk could just as easily say "something that would help out with the quota in our units is if they added a kill fee for every bear killed with the aid of hounds." It is what it is. I'm going to be at the meetings for the next guidelines revision pushing for a rolling quota. If the sow quota is not met in the first hunt, then it rolls into the next hunt. So, say you have a four sow quota for the first hunt in 22S. If only two sows are killed, then you add two sows to the quota for the second hunt in 22S, and so on and so on. As it stands now, if you exceed the quota in the first hunt, you can end up shutting down the second hunt, so it should work the other way as well. If the biology would allow for a certain number of sows in a calendar year, then the later hunts should get the benefit of unfilled quotas in the earlier hunts.

My FIL got one.

Post up when you find out. It can take several days for them to get just through the first wave of applications. The updated list shows several hundred tags were assigned yesterday, but we know they had have received many more applications than that on day one.

Barnes 145 grn LRX for 280 Ackley Improved
1uglydude replied to Saguaro's topic in Rifles, Reloading and Gunsmithing
One cow and one bull. 200 yards and 350 yards, respectfully. Both shots were high shoulder. Pushed through bone on both sides and exited and neither took another step. They're leaving the muzzle at 3350 fps, so they had a lot of energy to begin with. That being said, elk aren't made of steel. -
When was that? I have lived here for 10 years and have been doing leftover tags since my first year here, and in that time we have always had to include the application fee.

Barnes 145 grn LRX for 280 Ackley Improved
1uglydude replied to Saguaro's topic in Rifles, Reloading and Gunsmithing
I shoot the 129gr LRX in my 270 wsm. Amazing accuracy and flawless performance on two elk. I'm sure the 7mm version will do just as well. -
Because he drew in the bonus pass (20%) phase of the draw. He didn't have enough points to be in the bonus pass for 12b, but he did have enough points for a bonus pass draw on his second choice. So, by the time he could have been considered for the other 80% of tags in the 1/2 pass of the draw, he had already been awarded his second choice. Thus, he never had a chance at the 12b tag because he listed a second choice that required fewer bonus points than he already had.
-
Yep. The first non-bonus tag was tag 101. Did you have any of the harder hunts as a first choice?

I can't speak to how it will impact the early Kaibab hunt, but all the experts now seem to be saying that if the El Niño still shows up, it will be weak to moderate. They're no longer saying it will be strong. http://m.washingtonpost.com/blogs/capital-weather-gang/wp/2014/07/11/el-nino-plays-coy-with-forecasters-in-2014/

There's no law against carrying around a rifle in the outdoors. If you're worried, get a hunting license and actively hunt for trophy coyotes while you help her out. The Department is making a point of emphasis on requiring that she carry her own tag though. A lot of parents carry it for the kids to make sure that it is safe and secure. If you're carrying both the rifle and the tag, expect additional scrutiny. 85 grain should work, but make sure it's not a varmint bullet, which a lot of the lighter 6mm bullets are. I really like the 80gr Barnes TTSX for the .243. It will have enough energy to reliably do the job out to 350 yards or so.

You cannot be issued more than one tag through the draw, which includes leftover tags. You can have one non-permit tag (i.e. OTC archery) and one draw-issued tag. If you submit an application for a leftover having already been issued a tag through the draw, they will reject the application.

I drew 12A west 10/24-11/02!!! Scouting Services?
1uglydude replied to Gut Pile's topic in Mule Deer Hunting
My thoughts exactly. That hunt is a guaranteed draw with 7 points and greater than 65% odds with 6 points. A wait of 15 years with no deer tag would give you more than max points for deer, and any tag you want in the state. -
Tag #86 would have come out of the bonus pass. It means he had enough points for a 20% tag for his second choice, but not his first. The draw never even considered him for the 12b tag because he more than enough points for the 12a west tag. If he's irritated by that, then you probably don't want to tell him.

How Many Points for 22 or 23 Dec WT Will It Take?
1uglydude replied to AZMThunter's topic in Coues Deer Hunting in Arizona
Last year you would have been guaranteed 22 with 9 points if you were a resident. This year it would have been slightly better because the tag numbers were doubled, so maybe 30% odds with 8 points? If you have really been putting in every year since 2007, without missing a year, without drawing another tag, then you should have had at least 9 points this year as long as you did your part and got your hunters education in order. Either the amount of high-point holding residents drastically changed, or you didn't have 9 points. -
Are you kidding me? I have been looking for a 600 Mohawk in 243 for a long time and just bought one last month that's not nearly as pretty as that one!

I'll take the .224 v-max

ALERT fuel contamination Show Low Safeway !

Good thing it's only your weedeater! I feel bad for anyone who was less lucky. BTW...what does this topic have to do with draw results? -
Do these Grandparents have the intention of being in the field with the kids if they transfer the tag to them? I believe that if the original tag owner (parent or grandparent) is not in the field with them child then they cannot be using it. If they are then I'm all for it. That is not correct. The grandparent does not have to be in the field with them. The way the rule reads can make it a bit confusing. It means that they must be accompanied by an adult (the parent or grandparent). I have confirmed this with the Department as well. That's the way they enforce it. It was created by statute, and not by rule, so they don't have the ability to clarify it on their own. Leave it to the legislature to flub it up.

It's "they're"...not "there." Double douche bag.

They separated them so that people would have an opportunity to do one draw, and then the other. Some guys can only do a deer hunt or an elk hunt. The same thing goes with kids putting in for youth hunts. Youth elk and deer hunts often occur on the same weekend. Plus, it allows you to be more flexible with your other draw choices if you know for sure that you'll have an elk hunt at a certain time. I really like having them separate, but I wouldn't hate having the deer draw fall a month or two earlier.

REMINGTON MOHAWK 600 - .243 - Need Suggestions, Comments and Opinions
1uglydude replied to deserttacoma84's topic in Rifles, Reloading and Gunsmithing
Let me know if you decide to discard your original stock. I have been looking for one I could cut down a bit for my daughter. -
They reuse the tag number of the one that was rejected.

Make that a Savage Axis II Youth. $350 on Buds right now with a scope. What kind of a hunt is it? Coues hunt where longer shots are likely, or a mule deer hunt where you have a greater possibility of being close? If the latter, then the reduced 30-06 loads will be fine, or you can load up a Barnes bullet for that AR-15. If you've got a 1 in 7 twist you can load the 70gr tsx and it will do the job just fine inside of 250 yards.
