I'd like to build a mountain rifle...
Chef replied to 4Falls's topic in Rifles, Reloading and Gunsmithing
The optimum chambering options for small deer like Coues will be different than those for elk and bear. You would be dealing with different bullet weights/construction depending on what you will be hunting. What distances will you be shooting out to? Consider the short actions, these will save you a little weight. Maybe a 300WSM, with a muzzle break to tame recoil. Take a hard look at the Tikka T3 rifles. They are light, and the ones I've shot are incredibly accurate. -
Whack!, headshot! Looks like he didn't go far either.

Just so everyone knows, I'm able to keep track of who opens the photo. Not only that, I can see how many times you download it and who zooms in. (just kidding!)

Great buck no matter the score. Congratulations and I can't wait for the full story.

Anybody using a levergun for Coues?
Chef replied to MT_Sourdough's topic in Rifle hunting for Coues Deer
Oh yeah, killed a bull elk with the same 444 also, in Colorado. Love them levers! -
Anybody using a levergun for Coues?
Chef replied to MT_Sourdough's topic in Rifle hunting for Coues Deer
I sure have! (back in 2002) I actually used a triple four also. 44 yards and the rest is history! -

Chef replied to twigsnapper's topic in Antelope Hunting
That's just awesome. You are a lucky man to have found a wife that likes to hunt with you. Did she finish off the lope with her marquise? LOL! -
NIce! Congratulations, great pic too. The Browning rifles are putting the smack down on the goats up there this year!

Cute boys you have there. Funny how they kept the dove for the ride home! Great memories.

Always love reading your posts about your high country adventures. One of these days I'm tagging along!! -
Congratulations. The big guys will be there again next year and may present you an opportunity. Having this kill under your belt will assist with your confidence for when that trophy does present a shot. Plus, like others have said, he's great table fare!

Some really great ideas here guys. It's always nice to see what has been working for people with cooking wild game. Some of the biggest hurdles to overcome are done by trial and error. Threads like these definitely cut to the chase and show us all what works!

That was funny! (I have a dinner planned at Fogo De Chao at the end of Sept) Very good, but not the best.

I never have. I've actually never marinated dove breasts much before at all. As long as I process the birds as quickly as possible, and chill the meat promptly, I've never really had a need to. I do enjoy the mild liver taste that comes from dove meat. (I really enjoy the aroma of cooking actual beef liver & onions but can't eat it for some reason) I simply season the meat with dry seasonings, dust lightly in flour, and sear them in olive oil. I'm curious now, have you tried it Oneshot? NEVER overcooking is the main ticket. you can have everything else perfect, but if you overcook it, it's bad.
