    Anybody get out yet??

I've been waiting too. Nights are getting cooler. I'm guessing its a bit warm yet to push them down south but with this big cold front that's supposed to be coming I hope it's soon. Haven't seen the usual flights at the house (we have water here they use.) I'm hoping for some geese this year since they've eluded the steel I throw at them every other year.

    Question for Eyeglass Wearers

I'm with twig snapper. The zeiss is what I have had now for the past few years. For me it's the best I can see with glasses on. Haven't found a pair yet that I can use without the glasses.

    Best 10x42s under $500?

I love the bino debates. Yes there is better glass and worse glass, stuff you can afford now and stuff you gotta save for. Many good choices under 500 and I'm willing to bet most folks started in that price range and some are still there. Best advice I can give is to look thru several pairs. Eyeballs don't have a standard viewing perspective, distance apart from one another, or the same vision. Just like binos, eyeballs are different from pair to pair. Just because an expert on here tells you something isn't great doesn't make it true. It may be great for your peepers but not theirs. I use zeiss 10x56 victory and they work great, also have my wind river 10's from several years ago.

zero my rife and using turrets

Forget all the experts. Shoot and find your true grouping at your hunting elevation. Should only take a weekend or a day. Calculators are great but I always find my self second guessing and making my own ballistic charts. More accurate?? Um, yes because it's actual info!!

** butcher shop in north phx? maybe west?

Sucks being sick! I understand! I'm glad you found a good guy to help you out. If your in the same situation next year, just freeze quarters and cut it up at your leisure. I enjoy "playing" butcher and have got some good cuts!! Oh, they make chain miill gloves so you don't have to worry about you fingers. I'm sure you know all of this but just trying to emphasize home butchering. Hope your better soon.

    Favorite coyote gun??

.223 wssm, 36gn Berger is not loved. At 150 yards I has explosive results. Put milk jugs out at 300 yards. After a few rounds of not hitting I got concerned. Had a buddy shoot while I watched vapor trail. Saw the bullets explode before hitting the target due to speed! Bumped up to 80. Gn VLD'S after that.

    Will 5.56 damage fox?

I'm not saying to use the load I'm just saying its legal.

    Will 5.56 damage fox?

"I would highly doubt ANY manufacturer of ammunition for the specific purpose of taking game would load an FMJ bullet. If it says "for light thin-skinned game", I would bet it was either a small hole hollow point bullet or a lead nosed bullet." Winchester white box 45 acp. and not a hollow point of lead point

    Will 5.56 damage fox?

Some FMJ is legal to hunt with. I always thought it wasn't until a guy I know (new to hunting) asked if he could hunt with it and I said no. He showed me a box of FMJ ammo that said "for light thin skinned game" so we took it to the G&F and they said yes it was legal. With that being said I would not recommend killing an animal with an FMJ.

building a ground blind for coues

Build it now and stock it with your essentials. Give it plenty of time to become acclimated to the spot it's in. Or just try spot and stalk this year and set up salt and a blind for next year?

What kinda plant is this? Can I eat it?

Go plant some Mellon and pumpkin seeds at every local pond and creek bed. Come back in a year or so and harvest what grew. It'll surely raise eyebrows when people find them. I did it last year.

    Huge long distance typical!!

Thank you folks for all the kind words about the write up and about my health!! I walked almost 2 miles on Tuesday and it was rough! Only gagged once lol.better every day, soon I'll be able to return phone calls from fellow hunters and friends (some on here) since I can speak again YAY! Haha! Back to work as of Monday but holy crap it sucks. I'm winded just drinking water! Hope to kill a 219" coues in a few weeks, next to the road, while coughing, puking, and wheezing. But if I do..... Wow, game changer hahaha!!!!

    Huge long distance typical!!

It all started this morning. I've been really sick the past month and going stir crazy in the house. Feeling better yesterday and today I decided to head out for my hunt. I was out before sun up coffee in hand and the trusty rifle at my side. Grabbed my chair, set up on the back porch and started glassing. Like most other glassing sessions I saw lots of non game species, grass hoppers, birds, dogs, the cat, etc. glassed for a few hours before I decided to hike a bit. I've had pneumonia for the last two weeks so I took it easy but still put some distance on the house shoes! I walked a 200 yard circle around the house (spot and stock style) the wind was unreal! Gusting in every direction 5-20mph. I walked up on my prey two different times but both times I was eluded by his sly actions. Decided to make the hike back to camp (I mean the house) and cook some eggs. After a power house healthy meal of eggs, bacon, green chili, onion, mushroom, cheese, and pace, I was ready to go again! But the Z-PAC makes me poop so had to take care of business before I could take care of business if you know what I mean. A quick shower, change of clothes, and LOTS of TP later I was back on the hunt. Decided to sit water mid day so I sat next to the trough I have setup for quail and such. Wind still roaring I saw nothing. Around 2pm the antibiotic called again. Afterwards I decided to eat left over breakfast for lunch, mix a drink and head back out. If your not hunting all day then your not hunting at all! Sat on the porch again and glassed until my eyes were bleeding!! Finally around 4pm saw a set of floppy ears sticking out of a tree near the dry pond. I watched for an hour but it stayed bedded (dang wind!) finally when legal shooting light was almost out he stood up. I doped my scope for the distance and checked my wind and ranged him. With the hand truck as a rest I took 3 breaths and fired on exhale. The 702 plinkster (59.97 on roll back at the Walmart several years ago) with its Winchester wildcat lead bullet purchased at yellow front years ago hit its mark! I heard the wallop of lead hitting flesh and he dropped in his tracks. A quick high five to myself and the work began. I walked the 45 yards to the kill site and boned him out, packed him up and made the long trek back. Got back after dark just before the ice melted in my drink. Before anyone complains about such a long distance with this caliber I want to say I practice at these ranges and beyond several times a year and my fixed 4 power Bushnell is money! I haven't bought my rim fire reloading set up yet so hand loads aren't an option. Also the plinkster is aluminum bedded (don't ask how, but I did it) I taped him at just over 12" of ears gross without deductions. I only had one road hunter drive by although I think it was a rancher checking his cows. I was far enough off the road that it didn't bother my hunt luckily. I did lose my pack on this hunt but found it on the tailgate of the truck. No pics as of yet. They have been submitted to jackrabbit monthly in hopes of a good return. Big thanks to my wife for allowing us to move to the middle of nowhere and making this hunt possible. I thought about hiring a guide but it wasn't in the budget and i had no clue what % to tip!? The real hunter of my house is my terroir mix, she herds jacks into a 10' stick of 6" ABS on a regular basis and we have to free them from the torture. Unfortunately the dog was inside sleeping and did not care to help. Anyways, thanks for reading my adventure, pics will be posted as soon as its ok.
