Same goes if you are off the road in an area closed to ATVs in Colorado. It is points against your license. But CO needs to go after everybody--not just a select few. The outfitters like to herd the game with the ATV's to keep them on their lease--they seldom, if ever, stop them--but they go after everybody else--especially if you are a non-resident.

Boy Bird Dog-- Great minds think alike. I shoot a 308 Norma Mag on a sporterized 03 Springfield--built it in the mid-60's. I use 79 1/2 gr of H4831 with a 165 Nosler Partition and a CCI Mag primer. Love the load!!!! BOB

Got my CO rifle cow tag in the mail today. Season is from 8/15 to 10/31. You should have seen the look on the other half's face when I told her that I would be gone huntin' for almost 3 months. Gotta squeeze in my unit 8 cow muzzy hunt in late Sept too. It'll be a great year if I pull a WT hunt too. Hope the rest of you CO hunters pulled something too.--BOB __________________ __________________ Lift up your glasses

Do any of you see any kind of a pattern here? No logging, no oil exploration, no vehicular travel in the woods or desert, close this road because of a dumb flycatcher (forget public safety), wilderness area here--wilderness area there. No internal combustion engines, no nuclear plants--no nothing!!!!! BOB

Start The Wait,Does It Make A Difference ?

The nation itself is NOT in a recession--if you go by the numbers, but I have read that some areas of the country are--including AZ. From my perspective--gas prices are going to hurt some people when it comes to applying for multiple hunts. My yearly trip to CO is probably going to run $800 + or - just in gas. I had a 12a Turkey tag and the wife had taken vacation time to go up to Jacob Lake with me. We have a motorhome and she just loves to "camp". But she likes the amenities too--so we stay in camgrounds with full hook-ups. This years trip from here in AJ was going to run about $800 in diesel alone. We went up to Page Springs for 10 days and I scouted a little for my Muzzy cow Elk hunt. So--at least for me--it isn't tag cost that are the bummer--it is fuel prices. BOB -
Just got this from a CO hunting site. http://www.wyomingnews.com/articles/2008/0...ocal_033008.txt

I use a shooting stick--it works ok, but my preference has always been to drop to my right knee and rest my left elbow on the thigh of my left leg. It is all about whatever you are comfortable with. BOB

When I was 12 yrs old (I'll be 65 in Aug) my Grandfather gave me his rifle when he quit hunting ---too old to do it anymore. It was an '03 Springfield that was mildly customized. He bought it in 1939 through NRA for $7.50. He killed mule deer and blacktail deer with it. In about 1965 I got the bug to make a longer range rifle out of it. I had a custom Fajen Varmiter stock put on, Timney trigger, Beuler safety and a 3-9 Weaver Widefield scope with Redfield Jr mount & rings. The barrel was cut off and crowned --to get rid of the ugly front site. I had it chambered to 308 Norma Mag--the 30-338 to you old wildcatters and very similar to the Win 300. I now use 79 1/2 gr of H4831 pushing 165 Noslers. I had played with both 180's & 150's depending on what I was after and finally settled on one load for all. I have killed Elk, both Bulls & cows, Mule Deer, Blacktail Deer, Coues and Antelope with it. It has served me well in my years of hunting and has much sentimental value. I consider it a family heirloom. BOB

This was just posted in the local Lassen County rag--as you would expect--somebody is complaining about it. I think it is a good thing--but not absolutely sure.--BOB http://www.lassennews.com/News_Story.edi?s...ead&order=0

Just caught on Drudge about a 2000 acre fire in 9 near Ten-X campground. http://www.myfoxphoenix.com/myfox/pages/Ne...mp;pageId=3.2.1 BOB

In 9 there is a open area/grassland reclamation project--or something like that. They are knocking down mostly juniper that is encroaching into the open areas. Free firewood too I might add. Good project IMHO.-- BOB

I guess that they arrested and charged 3 guys from Texas. Unattended campfire was the cause. On the bright side, the report in the AZ rag is that the fire was beneficial to forest health.

How did my fellow front endloader fans do?--I pulled a unit 8 Muzzy cow.

The AZ POI said in a post somewhere last week that they should be online the latter part of this week.

Well what did you get drawn for?

Nothing is fool proof. Since the statute of limitations has long run out--I can attest that there were ways to get around some of these regulations if you were friends with the right people. But those discrepensies would be few and far between and wouldn't skew any stats. I would like to see it happen so that we would be afforded better management of our herds.

Maybe we sportsmen and these groups need to bring pressure on AZGFD to implement such a program. They are hired to manage this resource on our behalf and we have the right to demand (strongly suggest maybe) that they do it correctly. I don't know of another way to generate accurate data other than a mandatory reporting system. So I wonder what this commissioner has in mind? Idaho used to --may still do- have highway check stations--although maybe it was/is more accurate than AZ's system--it still left a lot to be desired. I think in a similar forum awhile back--someone suggested that if you didn't return the report card you would not get a license the following year. Given the mail service and other human elements--along with the fact that some would not report truthfully--I don't believe that this would be of any benefit. Doomed to failure from the start. BOB

Sure Tony-- The tag has a place for you and a countersigning officer or other authorized person to sign. You must also list the date, time, # of antler points and the general locality of the kill. You must transport the game to a person authorized to sign the tag. The portion that you enter that info on and is signed is torn off by the officer and mailed to the dept. As I said--there are penalties if you do not abide by the law. As I said--the list of people authorized to sign is quite extensive--composed of both Fed & State officials. All law enforcement officers--FS personel-postmaster/mistresses are among those that can validate the tag. Also-the wardens field check people and record that data . That data-although not accurate in actual harvest stats--is reflective of the trend. This reporting system may show a trend--but otherwise the #'s are suspect at best. There are all sorts of reasons why a person may not return the mailer--or reasons to falsify the answers. A mandatory reporting system would go a long way in ensuring proper management of this dear and valuable resource. Desert Bull--Yes--to answer your question--there are people who-for whatever reason do not want accurate data collected. Those people are doing the ethical sportsman a disservice IMHO!! BOB

I'll bring this up again--mandatory sign off of a harvested animal by a gov't official--Game Warden-Cop--mandatory records to be kept by processing plants--period--and a big fine/loss of hunting privilege for getting caught with unauthorzed game at home!!! And don't use the cop out that it won't work. If a state as inept as CA can have that process in effect for 40+ yrs with 6 times the population--don't tell me that it is logistically impossible to do it in AZ. Even a Postmaster has the authority to do it in CA. That would ensure acurate records. But--I'm sure there are those who DON'T want accurate records kept for one selfish reason or another. I accurately fill out my survey for every hunt and return it the next day. BOB
