Screw this. I might never step foot in the hills again if this happened to me. Freaks me out just reading something like this. I have a late tag in the Southern units and I hope I dont see one.. Hate them ! Almost sat on one in 35b last year on Nov 30th. It was fairly chilly they were out that late at 5500 ft.
  2. It's getting into the 40s at night and low 70s during the day according to my weather app. Get a couple cheap sleeping bags hang it at night in a game bag then double wrap the sleeping bags and keep in complete shade throughout the day and it will be fine, so long as you keep the fly's away from it and keep it completely dry. I've had that hunt the last 5 years and have kept deer up to six days this way with no problems.

    Hornady ELD-X and jump

I've only messed with the 200 gr & 212 gr from a 300 rum, but I've done pretty well with a .005 jump. I've gotten both down to 1/2 moa. I've found that you need a A-Max stem for the seating die to keep from deforming the bullet, and to get consistent seating depth.

    "Good to a thousand" mentality??

I think most everyone could be capable of shooting 1000 yards if they put as much time and money into it as they do their Tv. I also think I've seen 10 times the animals missed or wounded inside 150 yds by the cowboys that think you have to shoot off hand because John Wayne did it that way, as I have beyond 500 yds.

    Early ballot

When the government is involved yes! If they were honest they would have honest jobs.
  7. It's wicked flat! Only put factory weatherby ammo through it so far. Only topping my 270 Wsm by 25fps 3475 to 3500 both with 130gr Swift Scirocco's, but dialing 5 1/4 moa @ 650 yds with the weatherby and 11 with the 270 Wsm.
  8. Thinking about building another rifle. I want a prairie dog rig that will be good to 6 to 700 yds. I want this to be the most accurate rifle I own, a true one hole rifle. I'm also looking for little to no recoil, excellent barrel life, and mild muzzle blast. I've got a good idea on most of the components I'm going to use, but I don't know anything about aftermarket actions. So far I'm looking at the Defiance Deviant Tactical, but all i know is what I read on their site. Anyone with any experience with this action? The caliber I'm not completely dead set on yet but the two I'm looking at are the 222 rem, or the 22 PPC USA. On the barrel I'm thinking a 26" Krieger 8 twist in a REM varmint contour. The stock will either be a Manners MCS T4A or a McMillan A5. I'll finish it up with a Timney trigger a Swaroviski Z6 5-30 and an Atlas bipod. Any advice would be appreciated on the action & stock.
  9. Neither would be my first choice, but if they were what I had I wouldn't hesitate for a second with either. I would worry about bullet choice more than caliber. In the 270 130gr Swift Scirocco would be my first choice. My sister in law tipped over a cow last week with the Swift fired from a 270 Wsm @ 400 yds. Didn't exit but you could feel the bullet under the skin on the off side. Other choices would be Barnes 129 lrx, and Nosler 140 gr Accubond. In the 308 same bullets just 165's.

    Tripod and head suggestions

I use the Manfrotto 190x with a Manfrotto fluid pan head and I'm really happy. It's a little on the heavy side but IMO I really don't care for a very light tripod with the 15x glass.

    bedding a rifle

I'll second what Lance had to say on PCR. I've only had one built there but a second is in the works.
  12. I saw that as well. I found the same list for 2015 and Defiance was listed in the top spot.
  13. Well I think I'm getting close, but I've thought that a couple dozen times in the last few days. All I've done for the last two days is read about different components. I'm down to the Bighorn, and the Defiance as far as actions. Speedygoss your opinion on this matter is pretty popular. I found what you said in your first post a half dozen places around the web,(almost word for word). I like the look of the Defiance a little better but will likely come down to which one is more available. I thought I was pretty set on the Swaroviski Z6, but then I found the Kahles K1050. I'm pretty sure I need one! I've tried to talk myself into a mess of other cartridges from PPC's, to BR's, 6 Dasher, 6x47 Lapua, 6XC, 220 Russian, and 204 Ruger but just keep coming back to the Triple Deuce. Running some numbers through a recoil calculator I get 1.48 ft lbs from the 222 with the load I plan on running. That's about 20% less than the 22 PPC, and around 75% less than the 6mm's. Lapua offers factory brass for the 222 which is pretty appealing considering the amount of ammo I plan to go through. The 222 runs at lower pressure and uses less powder. I have to think that would mean more time shooting and less time waiting for the barrel to cool. I'm also thinking 222 should feed nicely from 223 magazines. The builder seems pretty set on the Krieger 8 twist, and I think it should get a 11° target crown. I'm also thinking of having an extra barrel chambered at the same time. I'm leaning real hard toward the Manners MCS-T4A. I'm slightly disappointed in the McMillan on my last build. Got it in March and just noticed a crack on top of the butt and a rather large divot in the cheek piece. Still a little confused on the trigger. Not so much which one, but what to set it at. Do I set it like a bench rest trigger, or around 2 1/2 lbs like all my other rifles? As for the know how to put it all together, it will be up to Phoenix Custom Rifles.
  14. What is it about the Bighorn, that you like over the Defiance?
  15. Don't really need it to be deer rifle already have 22-250 Ai,243wssm,25-06,257wby,6.5x55 Swed,6.5-300wby,a couple 270wsm's,30-06Ai,and a 300rum for backup deer rifles. When I go for some prairie dog action 600 rnd days aren't uncommon so looking for another rifle that's easy on powder, barrel, ears, shoulder, and just plain fun to shoot. Some times I go by myself so being able to call my own shots would be a plus. obbessssed Much???? I like it!!!!! Please keep us up to date with this build. Sounds awesome Well it's worse than that! I left out the varmint rifles, lever guns, shotguns, big bores, rimfires, muzzleloaders, handguns, and pneumatics.
  16. Eargesplitten Loudenboomer doesn't sound very low muzzle blast Lance lol! I considered the 22 dasher, 220 Swift Ackley, and the 22-6mm Ackley when I built the 22-250 Ackley. The 22-250Ai is a touch over 12 lbs and shooting low .2's with an 80 gr Berger Vld @ 3420 fps. Yes it's pretty recoil friendly but it's still pretty tough to watch the bullet strike in the scope. My fire forming load is a 53gr V-Max @3500 fps (22 PPC velocity). This load is crazy fun! Smacked a Coyote at 350 yds a couple weeks ago, and man I love the sound the V-Max makes when thumping song dogs. My first varmint rifle was a Savage 340B in 222 rem. Bought it at a yard sale in pieces for 100 bucks. The original stock was missing, but had a blank wood stock that someone had begun to inlet. It was missing a spring for the ejector & had no magazine. Stopped by my gunsmith friends house on the way home and he made the spring for the ejector and ordered a five Rd magazine. I went home and took my dremel and some sandpaper and finished the inlet. Finished I had under $200 into it with a cheap tasco 6-24x50 scope. Loaded up some 50 gr Moly V-Max and away I went. To this day the best 100 yd 3 shot group I have ever fired came from this setup, measured around .02". Now it's sitting at around 15000 Rds that I've put through it, god only knows how many before I had it. The extractor won't pull the cases any more, the safety doesn't click anymore when pushed to fire, and everything on it is loose. It still shoots better than my rem 700 223 that has less than 200 Rds through it. The 222 rem set most of the bench rest records in the 50's & 60's. A few still stand I believe but most have since been beat by the PPC & BR lines. An added bonus to the 222 is a pound of powder will load around 350 cases.

WY - A long time coming

    Good luck!
  18. Any luck on finding someone to go retrieve it?
  19. Appreciate the offer Vowell but already have a couple rem 700 short actions laying around. Thanks for the info Desert Bull I'll look into those actions. 700 yd pd action is a hoot when you get into a good town.

  21. Light recoil and muzzle blast, I want to be able to call my own hits in the scope, and I don't care for brakes.

People that like donating to the mechanic, or just like to brag about how their truck needs to be completely disassembled to fix anything, or maybe cowboys who still think you just shoot them when something goes wrong.
