  1. Its really not hard at all to find a class. Just plan for it ahead of time long before or after the draw. I am glad it is mandatory and should be mandatory for aduts as well. Your job as a dad is to MAKE them take the class whether they want to or not. Sign them up and dont even give them an option. I took it when i was young and it was a blast. Had a great time and learned a lot. My dad went with me even though he didnt have to and i suggest you do the same with them.

    Vortex Vultures 15x56 HD's

Yes those are the better ones. Supposedly the 2015 minox 15x56 are made in germany again and slightly better than the old 15x58. The minox 15x56 that came out when they discontinued the 58's were very unimpressive binos.

    Vortex Vultures 15x56 HD's

If they are the 15x58 minox i think they are pretty similar, kaibabs are definitely not any better. I have had both and also swaro 15's and 12's. The minox 58 and kaibabs are about equal and swaro 15's slightly better but not by much.

Has anyone heard of GOVX.com? they have new Vortex Razor HD 12x50 for $999 and Kaibabs for $1099. Only available to current and former military/law enforcement/ems etc. Most their other deals arent much of a discount but the Vortex has great discounts through them.
  7. reloading can get very frustrating for a beginner if you try to do too much at once. If you are reloading and want 1/2 moa accuracy there are things you dont have to do that someone who wants 1/4 moa accuracy will do. For instance, I dont worry about ideal seating depth becuase it is useless to me if i have to turn my rifle into a single shot because the bullets are too long to fit in the magazine anymore. I load to magazine length of my rifle so I can carry more rounds in the mag. I find a powder charge my gun likes and fine tune it to .1 increments and shoot at ranges out to 800 to verify the load. Doing this has always got me to 1/2 moa without even worrying about seating depth. I honestly dont care about getting it down to 1/4 moa. If you are wanting to shoot in competitions then do everything you have to for smaller groups. Most of the advice you will read online are from people who are accuracy freaks, people who love to tinker, and experienced reloaders and it can get very confusing to a beginner. I am sure people on here will disagree but you have to ask yourself what your rifle is capable of and what you are happy with in a load.
  8. My rifle accuracy changes a bunch from just .5 gns of pwder. At 56 gns I shoot 1/2 moa. at 56.5 its a 2 inch group. I would try smaller powder changes instead of jumping 2 gns at a time.

Going from 15x58 to 12x50. Will I regret it?

I do agree and the field of view is indeed larger with the 12's. The field of view wasnt too small all I can contribute it to was the flat lenses and 50mm objective. I am not an optics expert so not sure what the appropriate terms are.

Going from 15x58 to 12x50. Will I regret it?

I'm a bit confused with the second part of this post. What are you referring to when you say tunnel visioned? Referring to the feeling of my eyes feeling constricted while glassing and the feeling as I was looking through a tube. The 15x56 seem to feel more natural as if they were an extension of my eyes. Everyone's eyes are different though so someone else might not notice the difference.

The 12's are fine coues hunting til you get to about 600 yds. That is where the 15's simply take over. Also if you are used to the 58mm objective the 12's will feel a little tunnel visioned.
  12. Great thread! Will still be plenty of P&M though. Folks are just unhappy these days and its all about "me" to the ones that will be whining.

Going from 15x58 to 12x50. Will I regret it?

I did the same but went back to 15's for coues. For elk 12's are just fine. My problem with coues hunting was with 12's (swaro el) i still felt i needed a spotter even at 1000 yds which defeated my purpose in getting 12's. I sold them and went back to 15's since i dont carry a spotter.

Just joined a gym. what else is good?

My dog will run 15-20 miles and when we get back to the truck instead of laying down in the shade he is out chasing squirrels or sniffing around. Wish i had his energy.

    G&F Land Access Survey

I filled it out on behalf of those that hunt the southern units. Wrote in my own opinion and threw down some names as well. Not that it matters.

    G&F Land Access Survey

I got a letter stating i was one of a select few that would be participating in a survey that could change the way hunters and private land owners interact. The survey mentioned general hunting license increase to pay for land access, state tax increase, paying landowner at the gate, or buying some kind of stamp for land access. Asked a few other questions as well regarding private land access and what i would be willing to pay etc to hunt land previously locked up. My answer was "nothing". It Also asked what i thought about game and fish, how their performance has been, and what i expect from them.
