Very cool!

I am very thankful to have been involved with your first bull elk hunt. Every bit of your bull was earned and you are the one who made the great shot and spotted the bull. I knew you could make that shot. All those hours at the range paid off. 600 yds, one shot, and the bull dropped in his tracks like a ton of bricks. Normally they will swagger or run off a bit but yours dropped and thank God he did or we might have had to pull him out of that canyon. Yuck!!! Again great job and you worked as hard as anyone at getting your bull! Very proud of you and I look forward to many years to come of exciting hunts...

Have you seen all the trophy bulls taken over the last few years in az? Do you think if the trophy bulls keep being taken that big bulls will continue to exist? A lot of the hunters in az, the majority of the hunters, would rather have the opportunity to hunt rather than a quality hunt. That majority does not visit or have even heard of coueswhitetail.com. They just want to go out, have a good time with friends and family, and have the chance to shoot any bull or cow. They could care less about size. For them which i do believe are the majority of elk hunters, game and fish are doing a great job. The ones who want to get away and truly hunt a trophy might be getting the bad end of the deal but then again game and fish cant please everyone. They might as well please the majority. For those that keep bashing game and fish because you feel they have not done a good job but what would you have them do? Cut tags in half to please the trophy hunters while the ones who do it for meat and to teach others how to hunt and bring new people to the hunting community get the shaft? Is it not more important in the long run to ensure people continue to hunt and have the opportunity to hunt? If you stop seeing elk and the numbers drop drastically i would agree they are doing a bad job. So far that is not the case in az. The trophy quality may go down but that can rebound from year to year and who knows how they will manage what in the years to come. Think about the overall hunting community instead of your own desires (although everyone is entitled to their own feelings). I shot a late archery raghorn this year and am more proud of that bull than my big ones. That was a true trophy in mine and others eyes. Its not all about size. Hope i didnt offend anyone, just trying to help folks see a different perspective.

Suggestions on which long range gun to buy
AverageJoe replied to Big Browns's topic in Long Range Shooting
Your speeds for the .308 with 208 amax are a bit low. Most guys now are running the 208 at 2550-2650 and even up to 2700 depending on barrel length. Plug 2600 (an average speed) into your calculator and you will get a true comparison. 2600-2700 is very possible in the 308 with R17. I prefer the 200 gn sierra gameking to the amax. I run it at 2640. That combination is simply amazing from a .308. -

Dont count the eyeguards as points but count them on score. Simple as that. A 3 point has three points on one side other than the eyeguard. A 3x3 with eyeguards is not a 4x4 as a couple people have mentioned on here lately.

Each state should be able to do what they want with the land within their borders. It would be nice to have the choice of 50 different states to live in rather than one giant state that we have now called the u.s. i vote yes for anything that helps give the states power over their own land. The state is run by our neighbors and people that will listen to us more than the feds ever will. Why let the power of deciding our lands future be held in the hands of those that are in washington dc and pushing a liberal agenda????
-
Nice thing about having 50 states....if you dont like the way things are going in the state you are in, find a state that matches your beliefs and move. Thank God states still have some rights to manage their own state as they see fit.

Dang i would have taken the meat!

I will regret asking this i am sure but are we as hunters supposed to look out for one another when it comes to ethics or just say to each his own and congratulate no matter what? Is a kill a kill no matter how it goes down or should we try to encourage bettter tactics? I am talking about a blatent ethics violation not something borderline that some may or may not agree with (i.e long range, bait, etc..) I dont want to condemn in a personal manner but also dont want to encourage unethical or even dangerous hunting. What would you say to someone that said they wounded 3 elk flinging arrows from 50-100 yds but had not practiced at all and picked up arrows at walmart the night before? I am not perfect and know that, just want to know what other peoples opinion is on this and how you would go about handling it. Would you say something to someone in the field if you saw them, would you mention it online? Is it any of our business or not? I feel since we are all in the field together it is all of our business.... Just want to know what others think...

LMAO. Classic!!!!

Bring an extra battery if you can. Also put a fleece blanket on your bed and sleep on top of that. Helps a lot to keep warm at night.

If the first shot hadnt missed by 3 feet I would say awesome for sure!

The officer is allowed to take the gun to protect his safety. When he takes it he has to check to see if it is stolen or not. There is a gray area when the person refuses to hand the gun over. Some would call that probable cause rightthere that the person is hiding something. Some might not. Each stop is different and has to be handled as such. If someone is speeding 5 miles an hour over that is most defintely a violation of the law and a ticket would he warranted. No normal officer writes a ticket hoping they just pay it and dont show up. Every detail of the traffic stop is noted in case of a court date. I wont get into scumbag lawyers perverting the law to make money. Worthless...

Guess i never had anyone object to it. Not sure why you would? Just like running your plate when you are pulled over and running your license to make sure you dont have a warrant. It is part of knowing who you are dealing with. How does the law enforcement officer know what kind of person you are? Running the weapon is not a violation of your rights. During the stop if you have a weapon (handgun not hunting rifle that is cased) the officer should take possession of that weapon to ensure his safety. Since he or she has possession it is common sense to run the sn to make sure it is not a stolen weapon. There is no reason to be paranoid or think you are now "inthe system" or something like that, unless you have a stolen weapon or bought it from someone shady.
-
It is only checked to make sure it is not stolen and yes perfectly legal. There is a national database of any reported stolen weapon. I was AZ Highway Patrol and running a weapons check is standard on any weapon discovered on a traffic stop.

Wow! Glad you were at the right place at the right time
