Bought some at sportsmen's warehouse today not much left though maybe 50-60 boxes left, that's the I17 location by the way and they have absolutely no .22 left !

Kidso great story. I have been on this site for a while, and check in every other day but don't post much, from what I see and hear you did exactly what most of us would have done. ethicalhunter is a back seat driving, third string idiot ! I only posted on this thread because I had a very similar situation happen to me in january only it was my first archery coues and it was an eagle preserve closed to all entry. Also I have an archery bear tag currently going on in 23n and I was wondering what calls you use andhow you set up...if you don't mind.

First thing is to cut a 4-5" square out around the scent gland on the back then I take it back while to camp skin and quarter it and donate to the Adobe Mountain Wildlife Center or to a local soup kitchen...that's the best recipe I have found .

My dad has three he drew four tags in five years back in the late 80's I have been applying for 18 years plus a loyalty and hunters education point puts me at 20 bonus points going into to this draw...I think I'm due...I think.I HOPE !

The blades do break sometimes but at $12 for 50 im in for as sharp as they are and (considering they dont break) as long as they last. plus its light weight and and there is no need to carry shapening implements of any kind just snap a blade off and snap a blade on. but be very careful with it cause it is sharp, my buddy was skinning his father-in-laws elk, slipped, and stabbed himself in the forearm through three layers of clothing. He got lucky !

After taking pics and everything lay the deer on its side and make your regular skinning cuts down the legs to the center and stem to sturnum. then skin the deer all the way up and over until the side facing up is completely skinned and exposed then began cutting and butchering ( carrying a 5' square sheet of 10ml or 20ml plastic is nice to lay the meat on the ground as it comes off). I start with the back straps then the front and rear quaters then the neck. then when you get all the meat off of that side roll the deer back onto the skin you already removed and do the same. Once both sides have been cut and the hide removed you can remove the last to ribs and cut the tenderloins out on each side. If you want to save even more wait you can remove the bones from the front and rear quaters by laying it on the plastic so that the inside of the quater is up then find the ball of the socket and make a cut from there straight down to the bone and follow the bone all the way down then just cut around the bone until the thing just falls off. I just carry a Havalon and I bought extra baldes but i am still working on the pack that came with the knife. so far i have taken care of 2 deer, 1 pig, 1 mountain lion, and a handful of birds on less then 12 blades and that incudes the butchering when back at camp. they are $34 at sportsmans warehouse and extra are $12 for 50 i believe, hope this was of help. and did you notice, GUT FREE ! there are some good links on jayscottoutdoors.blogspot as well as Lance Crowther of TLO he is the one I learned from with my dads buffalo a few years back.

Not canvas but, the Alaknak (I believe is the name) from cabelas is a great tent. We picked one up last year and the first trip out was on my buddies elk hunt in 5BN It rained for pretty much seven straight days and we were dry as a whistle. Its made of a cordura nylon type material, definitely lighter than canvas, i have seat covers made of the same material and they are bullet proof, the floor is sewn in, no fly needed as material is waterproof, we have the 12 X 20 with 5' walls, there is a zip out in the floor and cieling for a stove, we have not had a cold weather hunt in this tent yet but, we will come the end of the month in 12AW on my dads deer hunt so i dont know the insulating factor of the material, we also have a large vestibule that acts like a front patio and they make a floor liner for it. We had four large guys with four xl cots and all of our gear for two weeks of elk hunting and it was very spacious... just another option for if you not dead set on canvas.

Im not saying because i have had a camera up before everybody else that its my spot but if i find a waterhole and there is already a camera on i dont put mine on it because thats unethical if I had a spot in mind to camp but did not take time to put my tent or trailer up and someone else did i dont go camp in the same spot. It is public ground and EVERYBODY has a right to equal access but its the common courtesousy to recognize somebody elses hard work in a particular area or spot. My last elk tag I had cameras up from Aug 1 all the way through the hunt that ended Sept 24 and one weekend I was checking my camera and MY waterhole for sign and three guys in an old jeep drove up. The oldest of those guys asked what i was doing and i said checking my cameras, he said how long have they been up and i told him Aug1 first. he replyed and said i will go take my down then cause last weekend i did not see yours when i put mine up, by the way we have a real good bull on ours good luck. I said thank you very much i will be camped at the end of such and such road if you need anything.and we plan on hunting in this area, we looked at maps and i said i will stay clear and they said the same he said we will be camped at such and such place if you need anything. i said i will keep that in mind and we parted ways. no arguments, no spot stealing just a couple of hard working hard scouting hunters putting in due diligence and just a couple of MEN respecting each others efforts. No crying over camping spots and waterholes just respect thats all i ask for and thats what i give if you decide to work hard scout and earn it.

Redicuously cold, woke up to 2" of snow one morning and the wind never blew less than 15-20 mph for the entire trip, which made shooting off of sticks very tricky
