Spent a few days fishing Strawberry reservoir in Utah with my brother. A 12 ft flat bottom on a lake that big is a bit of a challenge but we made it work. I’ve never been there before, and was in the smallest boat on the lake. It was very different than the trout fishing I do here in Calif. Four days of fishing, we boated about 40 Cutthroats and 30 rainbows, and probably lost that many more. Nice size, with a dozen of the Cutthroats at 20 inches or more. Two biggest were a 22” and a 24” Cuttroat. I caught the 22” on an Ultralight. The hot lures were a Rapala J-7 in Rainbow trout pattern and a nightcrawler harness.

Since I’m down to one long shot in the hunt draws, I’m starting to plan a fall fishing trip. Thinking about heading to Fish lake for a few days in October, then up to Strawberry reservoir. I will take a small (12 ft) Alum boat, and mostly troll. Any thoughts or advice ? Are there better places in the South West to catch some decent trout with a boat that small ?

Any more advice on fishing Strawberry ? I leave in a week.

Looks like Strawberry it is. i booked a room at the Strawberry Bay Lodge end of Septmember. Plan on trolling Rapalas, maybe some lake troll blades.

Regarding mu chances of drawing an AZ elk tag this year;

Was in a local Walmart today. They had a dozen boxs CCI .22 mag, and tons of mini mags and Fed Auto-match. I got excited, but then i realized i already had all i need of all three.

I'm in, with only 5 points, it's late rifle for this non resident.

So I picked up a small aluminum boat, and started taking my 13 year old son up trolling on some high country lakes in central Calif. this summer. We really didn't have much luck until last Sunday. Courtright lake at 8,000 feet. We must have boated 20 or more trout, 11 to 16 inches.

Mama's Fish House for dinner. One of the best seafood restaurants anywhere. Go early and get a table with a view of the beach. Watch the wind surfers while you eat local fish from the restaurants live wells, as fresh as possible. The fishing is best on the big island.

Basically this. Rating + 10 to sleep in long bottoms and a T-shirt. Rating + 20 to sleep toastie warm in your skivies. Besides that, pick a bag that you like. I've got the SlumberJack -20 for cold nights. You'll sweat if it's over freezing.

Looks like I drew the 2nd (Oct. 18) Muzzleloader tag in New Mexico unit 15. Dang it Flatline, I told you guys you need to start making New Mexico unit maps. Any way, I have a Gila national Forest map and a chip for my Garmin. . Other than “MyTopo” are there any other good detailed hunting maps for 15 ? Any suggestions ?

I'll just throw this out for consideration. Several years back, I drew one of those "North of the ditch" tags, and wanted everything perfect. So I went out and bought several boxes of different premium fifty dollar .270 ammo, While I was at Walley world, I also picked up a few boxes of the cheap stuff, Federal blue box 130s for $13 a box to use for standing, off shoulder practice. I set up a target at 400 yards and started shooting groups. Guess what out shot everything? That's right, the cheap stuff was grouping under 2 inches at 400 yards. Basicly, out of my .270, a 70s vintage Rem 700 topped with a Kahles TDS, the more expensive the ammo was, the worse it shot. I took the Federal 130s ( I think they load Sierra Game kings in the cheap stuff) to the Bab and took my deer with one perfect shot at 400 yds.

Don't know how to rotate picture And I thought you were showing us how impressive it works on hillsides. Great price for a good spotter.

I just drew the Oct. 18 muzzle loader tag in Unit 15 New Mexico. Any advice ? General or specific, posted or private message would be appreciated.
