    string makers

A set of winners choice that include a string and two cables is going to be $90-$125 give or take on the bow and markup by the seller. Install costs not included. My John's Customs and BuckNasty sets were in the $70-$80 range. Again that's a complete set with a string and buss/control cable(s) and install costs not included. I have my own bow press so string installs are done for free. I am also of the opinion that you should change all out strings & cables at the same time. cmc

    string makers

I shoot custom strings on all my bows nowadays . I have used Winners Choice, John's Customs and Buck Nasty (John and Bucknasty are sold via Archery Talk) Once I've put on one of those strings and set the tune on the bow I've never had to go back and adjust anything. No stretch after the first 50 shots. None! No peep twist (I don't use a peep tube and haven't for years) no knock movement and no control or buss cable adjustments for dual cam bows. That is with a lot of shooting each year. I would say that I average about 100 shots a week. That's not including at hunting camps, at 3 D shoots and other away from home shooting. Just what I do in the back yard and my setup in my garage. Toss in the fact all I do is crawl around spot and stalk everything I hunt I'm very abusive on bow strings. The custom ones hold up much longer both in the field and on the range than any factory string I've shot. I also can not suggest it enough to properly care for your bow string with cleaning and waxing throughout the year! You just sunk some good money in that bow string you better care for it now. Same goes for cleaning and lubing your bow. How many folks have removed their cam axles cleaned them and the limb holes, re-lubed them and put them back in or lubed their limb pockets or other moving parts? I know guys that have owned the same bow for 5 years and never done any of that other than wax their string once a year. Then again they shoot 100 times a year and sit a tank maybe 3 days a year so thier bow doesn't see the abuse to warrant it. Over time though things dry out and dirt gets caked on. Give it a good strip down cleaning and you'll be surprise how it brings an old bow back to life. I'm hearing that a Byron with the Desert Archers is making custom strings here in Tucson. I need to follow up and get the details with that. So far the reports have been very good with his workmanship and quality of products. I believe Kim down at K&L Archery on Ajo can get you one if you're in the market for one. I'll probably get a new one for my wife's bow from Byron when I can get time to place and order. cmc

    Sunrise 3D Shoot

Figuring that Chronos cost about $200 then one better charge $50 a shot because it won't take long before some idiot puts an arrow through it. It is a good idea but I think I'd have a piece of steel with a hole cut out for folks to shoot through. Actually now there is a novel idea for the smoker course to get more folks to shoot it! Maybe on the first target on the smoker you shoot through a hole in a steel plate at a target. As long as you make it through the steel you'll know your speed even if you miss the target down range, you'll know how fast you missed it. Hmmm.... Think the ABA guys could work on this one before their event? Hey Dick you reading this one? C&S.... I think I recall you guys shooting too now that you mention it. To funny. cmc

    Sunrise 3D Shoot

I did 6 courses and to be honest they were setup well and agree that some of the targets needed to be upgraded or turned around. The one was not shot up on the back side. I wonder if an archery person was present when they set up that target? Second was there needs to be more enforcement of the 4 shooters per group rule that I think the ABA upholds. We were on course 3 Saturday for 3.5 hours and that includes skipping two targets mid way through to try and get ahead of two large groups and then we walked off the course with 4 targets to go having waited 20mins and still had 2 groups ahead of us waiting to shoot the next target. That my friends is way to long on a single course! In the end... it was a good shoot and I felt I got both my monies worth and my archery skills tested. Great practice for my upcoming bow hunts. I got to shoot with Deserthntr and I thank him, his dad & buddy for allowing me to join in their group. It was a pleasure to shoot with you guys, thanks. I wish I could make the ABA shoot at the end of the month but we have our RMEF banquet in Tucson that same weekend.

How will you make this shot?

Yep to far and too windy for this cowboy. I'd risk giving him time to calm down and work on a better approach. Besides, I'd probably hit him high on the horn and give him a matching flattop set. cmc

How will you make this shot?

Boy is he missing some horn. Are you sure there isn't anything not beat up in the unit?
  10. Nope you nailed it. Some models of fold overs don't include steel rings and some the blades hit the ferrule before the insert. Thanks for the info. cmc
  11. I am curious on the fold over the top broad heads. Did the blades bury or indent into the ferrule a bit or did that hold up to the opening impact when the blade bottomed out at full open? cmc
  12. Great test but it tells me one very important thing... I will never buy a block target for broadheads.

Remington Model 700 CDL 300 Ultra Mag

I think Tucson Sportsman's Warehouse has one. At least they have a Remington in 300 Ultra Mag but I fail to remember which rifle it was. I'd give them a call and check out what it is. 300 Ultra Mag is not a round that you see in stock every day. cmc

  16. Nice job dar hoser... don't ya no..... ehh... (said like Doug McKenzie from "Strange Brew")
  17. Predators in town are a liability and safety issue. Repeat offenders are the worst. More strikes against them more chance they'll die of lead poising before being released. Sure it'll make some hunters and bunny huggers mad but in the big picture, liability is of great concern... Least we forget the $2.5 million the state paid out after the 1996 bear mauling of Anna Knochel on Mount Lemmon. Besides... how would you like to be the G&F person standing at the hospital or cemetery apologizing to the family that you thought moving the bear 10 miles away was good enough. Do I think they all need to be shot... heck no. Do I agree with some of their tactics, nope. But I get the sticky situation they are in with bears and lions in town/city limits. cmc

    BACKPACKING BOOTS OPINIONS NEEDED

I have used Danner 452 GTX for 4 years then I bit the bullet and bought a pair of Meindls IQ Fits and was not pleased with them. Too tall for me and even after a few trips they are still way too stiff for trying to put on an archery stalk. Great sheep country boots I'll say that much. I wanted to find a boot that was shorter, had decent ankle movement, yet supportive, and a vibram like sole that would take a beating and allow for carrying a heavy load on rocks quite well. While at the RMEF national convention in Reno this year I was able to try one some Kenetreks, Schnees, and then found a new company to me, Zamberlan. I tested each boot multiple times over the few days I was there and it came down to the Zamberlan's. Specifically the Zamberlan 965 LHASA GT models. I'll admit the price was a big selling point since they had a huge show discount but if I laced on all those boots with a blind fold, I couldn't have told them apart. On thing I tend to shy away from is when it says something other than Goretex on the side of the boot. I've been watching a buddy struggle with a boot that says it's waterproof and turns out it's not even close. Not something I want to risk on a $300 boot purchase. So I texted some buddies to do some research on the boots the first day. Turns out they are huge in Italy and have gotten some seriously great reviews from the back packing community. Well after a few days of wearing them to work and around the house they feel great. I haven't gotten them out in the field yet but that should take place this weekend or next. Time will tell if they turn out to be a good boot but compared to the previous boots I've worn I think they'll what I was looking for in a boot for packing in but still being able to put on a stalk on a deer with my bow. Here is the link to the Zamberlan LAHSA boots.http://www.zamberlan.com/catalog/index.php?lang=en&pg=prod&idprod=102&idcat=2 cmc

    I second that.
  20. Folks - I'm posting this hear as well AZSJ as I need to pick the colors of felt for a bear rug (jet black bear) and need some help finding photos of bear rugs on the net or ones you have on the wall to help choose a good color combo. I'm short on time to do the search myself so I thought I'd ask the board for some help. If you have photos or done the research for trying to pick felt colors and know of some sites with pictures please post or let me know. Much appreciated by my wife since she's having a hard time picturing what it would look like with different felt colors as a complete bear rug. Cheers, cmc
