    Not your Honey Holes ;)

Here are some things that you might find helpful to prepare you for your trip. 2014 Fall Hunter Clinic. Jay Scott and Russ Jacoby talk about the Kaibab buffalo http://jayscottoutdoors.podbean.com/e/episode-9-arizona-buffalo-herd-in-the-house-rock-valley-and-kaibab-plateau/ Habimap is your friend. Imagery to see the open spots & Topo for the road numbers - Do not drive on any road that's within a mile of the park boundary. Hike it. http://habimap.org/habimap/ Check access conditions before going. (Like when the gate is open and closed as well how to access the area during a winter hunt) North Kaibab Ranger District 430 South Main Street PO Box 248 Fredonia, AZ 86022 (928) 643-7395 Fax: (928) 643-8105 Kaibab Plateau Visitor Center Hwy. 67 and 89A Jacob Lake, AZ 86022 (928) 643-7298 It doesn't show them all but it's a start for maps of water holes. http://huntmap.com/shop/viewitem.php?productid=386 Simply because it's a good read before you head up to hunt the majestic creature or save it for when you're in the blind hours on end. http://www.amazon.com/American-Buffalo-Search-Lost-Icon/dp/0385521693 I also recommend hitting Youtube & Vimeo and searching for 'bison' and 'American buffalo' videos, even the greeny documentaries. The goal is to observe every buffalo you can to try and identify a bull from a cow if you have a cow only tag. Aim low. Vitals on a buffalo are in the bottom 1/3 of the beast but more importantly because that hump will through you off so if you shoot center of mass you're way high already... Or so I'm told. I never fired a shot so I don't have any experience in this arena. Start setting aside every magazine you subscribe to, don't ready it, just put it in a stack. You'll have plenty of time to read them sitting in the blind during the hunt.

    2015 House Rock Buffalo Hunt

I was one of the tag holders that didn't fill their tag and I invested 32 days into my tag. My advice to those applying for AZ buffalo, do some serious research before you apply (key words BEFORE you apply!). I recommend finding anyone that drew the tag you want to apply for in the future and offer to go up on their hunt and spend time around buffalo camp(s) asking questions and offering to help in any way you can. You'll quickly learn if it's something you want to put in for or not. Only 6 of the 20 tags last year were filled in the last two weeks of June. There was sound reasoning why they shortened the season, I for one didn't like it, but I understand it, and the dates were specified at the time I applied so I knew there was a shorter season. Don't get me wrong - I still don't like that it was shortened. But what's done is done and there isn't anything I can do to change it. Looking forward though, I'm excited what the future holds for the buffalo and very optimistic in seeing things shift for a positive north of the ditch. It will take time, which is fine by me as I'll need many years to build up points again anyways, but given some patience I think that sportsmen will find that their chance of taking home a once in a lifetime freezer full of buffalo meat quite realistic. cmc

    CrossFit

That's classic! I workout in my own garage but need to invest in some more gear. I've gotten some pretty funny looks from the retired folks out on their morning walks when they pass by me while I'm doing walking lunges down the street hugging a kettle bell.

    game and fish cam

Over the years conservation groups that have funded studies and research that involve the G&F placing trail cameras to gather data so it's not out of the question to see them scattered across the state. Also they will place them at both watch catchments needing redevelopment as well recently installed or redeveloped water catchments to monitor it's usage by wildlife. Data from both uses of trail cameras, as well others I have not mentioned, is utilized in the planning, development and approval of future water projects. Another point of interest is they do us some good in proving to the preservationist groups (anti human involvement minded) that such activities are needed in the course of wildlife management to promote and sustain healthy herds in our state. Sitting on a local HPC committee and working on various projects I've seen the value of having the data gathered from cameras and I see the need in the department using them. What they may place at the camera site could depend on what the research or activity dictates. So say they are working on a multi year research project to see if supplementing a specific type of mineral to the wildlife population in a specific targeted area has positive affects to that herd. Thus I could see they are putting out a substance not legal to be used by sportsmen in the act of hunting, but the intent of sportsman and the department are not one in the same so we shouldn't look at it the same. my $.02

I'm embarking on a custom rifle build this next year to fit my needs. It starts with a rifle bolt on the left side of the action for this south paw shooter. Also after some thought I'm going to break up the package and sell the items separate as I've had offers and need to move product. I'll edit the post to reflect that soon. cmc

Adding a picture of the only wear I could find on the pack which is on the bottom side of the belt. Looks like it comes from standing the bag upright and moving it around when it's heavy. I think back and see doing that while loading and unloading the pack or taking it on and off. When it's packed with over 50lbs of stuff I remember sliding more than lifting. My new Mystery Ranch and my older Gregory pack have some wear in this area too.
