    need help with weight.

My Full Metal Jackets weigh in at 436 on my reloading scale. FMJ 400's 28" shaft 100 gr tip AAE Max hunter vanes I too switched from Carbon Force 300's only because I wanted to get my grain weight over 400 for elk. I can tell a difference in the bow shooting the CF 300's to the FMJ 400's. No trouble with the Carbon Force arrows and they've worked flawlessly on all the animals I've taken with them. Just wanted to get over the 400 grain mark ...and try something new I guess.

    Blazer vane question

I've shot some form of carbon force 300's for the past 4-5 years and went to blazers about 3 years ago. The STL hunters are great and I've taken elk, javelina, bear and antelope with them. I fletch my own arrows and my process is clean with alcohol, both the shaft and blazer and use AAE glue on my Blitzenberg jig. I've never lost a vane and I mean never! That' shooting through animals, through targets, through cactus (lots of misses) they have never fallen off. I have a very very slight twist off center on the jig and after testing straight, slight or hard helical this works the best for me and my bow setup. I've recently wanted to break the 400 grains mark for my bull elk hunt so I went with some Easton Full Metal Jackets and after putting them together I ended up with a 436 grain arrow. They fly really good but I haven't put any broad heads on them so the jury is still out. I'm tempted to add some wraps to them to aid in visual flight and seeing the hit on an animal better but I've never ran or worked with wraps before. cmc

    Fall Regs?

As for ram types.... I don't think the 'recommendations' ever spell that out, but the 'regulations' will when they become available.

Gunna buy a new pair of boots.... need advice.

I ended up getting a pair of Cabela's Denali™ Hunting Boots with Fit IQ by Meindl. Discounts on hand with coupons and gift cards made it worth going that route, that and after I tried them on vs. the Alaskan Meindl boots that are way too stiff I was pretty sold. Ron Green let me try on his used ones to see how they feel after a few years of service and for me I think it'll be a great boot for coues hunting and our various pack in trips throughout the year. I'll stick with my danner 452gtx for archery elk and deer in the woods but for the rocks down south I'll lace these guys up for sure. I've only got two days in them at work and they are great thus far. Hope to field test ASAP and will get out a report. I went with them with the key things I was after were... waterproof, somewhat flexible top, hard vibram like sole. These boots allow for my ankle to move but I won't feel the rocks or water. Just what I wanted. The Alaskan are just way to stiff and I doubt they'd break in enough to be what I wanted. Maybe if I dall sheep hunted every year I'd get them but the Denali fit the bill for me.

    Guide License

what rounds you can and can't hunt with, more the can hunt range with that's listed in regs. archery restrictions like minimum broad head cutting size & minimum draw weights. but I agree that you'd want to be really sharp on the specific items a guide has to report on.

    They are up!!

Qwest has this little thing called... 'call gapping' It's pretty neat... mostly used for contest and such type of overload dialing into one number. It's not G&F that's causing the busy signal.... TRUST ME! cmc

    They are up!!

Just about every G&F person in HQ is out setting up for the Expo this weekend. I highly doubt this is affecting them in the office one bit... Also a reason why there hasn't been any notice about them being out... They are busy with other commitments. cmc

    Bear and Bones

Trail marker sign showing distance to either trail head or intersection of another trail. The area we were in is not known for elk with big 3rds so the shed I have isn't something you see every day in that unit by any means. Made it pretty special. I think the coolest thing was the two sheds Packer found. We seriously believe that they are from the same bull, one from this year and one from last year, looking at the 'fingerprint' at the bottom base. That was pretty neat to land both of them. One was along the trail with an easy spot but Packer glassed up the other one from a good distance away adding to the rare chance encounter to find two from the same bull. Something that just doesn't happen every day I guess. Lets just say it was meant to be. cmc

    Bear and Bones

No fresh bear sign and as funny as it was, we only saw two elk the entire trip. Two antlerless, believed to be a cow and her calf. BooBoo and Yogi haven't gotten out of bed yet from the winter. This year we were pretty locked down with when we could do the trip otherwise we would have waited till the end of the season and then made the trek in hopes they'd be out by then. We had seen some sign from last year but nothing that was from this spring. We've got a fall pack in trip in mind if we still have tags in our wallets and vacation time on the books. cmc

Feral hog/Russian wild boar in 36C?

I hunted with an old timer years ago that when he was a child use to live down in 36A. Back during the great depression it got so tuff that his family let their hogs go out into the wild and they moved back to Tucson. We were down there hunting about 10 years ago and had seen some. When we told him of that he smiled and wondered if those were some of the descendants of his daddy's pigs that they let loose so many years before. All I know is the ones we'd seen were HUGE!!! Didn't know back then we could have shot them. Live and learn. cmc

Gunna buy a new pair of boots.... need advice.

So far after a few more boots I tried on I'm leaning towards the Kenetreks. I just wish someone in AZ stocked them so I could try them on again with my hunting socks on. might just need to take the plunge and order them and return if not fitting. At least then I could take them in some stores and try against the others. I might need to jet up to REI and try some others on but that won't happen till a few months and I'd prefer to have them sooner than later to get broken in for scouting or early hunts. cmc

Gunna buy a new pair of boots.... need advice.

I too have been researching boots and trying on every pair I can find. So far my try on reviews.... Kenetrek - Tried on at the RMEF national banquet in Texas last week at a booth... very very nice and should have bought a pair at the show price. Somewhat stiff but not near as bad as the others below. Felt great for coues country, elk county and serious hiking. Cabelas Denali By Meindl - Stiff as a board in every part of the boot. I could barley walk in them even after 15min of walking around at the store and tieing them 4 or 5 differnt ways. I'm not sure I could live with them and fear the break in time isn't worth the cost savings against the Kenetreks as they had the same support but not near the pinch like listed before. Lowa Trekkers - Decent boot and could live with them but think the leather would wear out on top before I wore out the bottoms in the rough rocks we see here down south. Asolo TPS 535 - Rank right there with the Lowa boots but had a much better fit in the heal. For the steep country I like them over the Lowa. For more flat walking Lowa cost difference I'd give them a try. I'm going to try on the Danner 453 GTX next. I have Danner 452 GTX but like that the 453's are a bit more hefty. Price is reasonable but again I'm wanting to go to the next level myself in boots so not sure they'd meet the requirements I have in mind. good luck as I know from my experience it's not been an easy decision. (will these boots be OK 8 miles in the back country???) let us know what works out for you. cmc

    Officials euthanize AZ jaguar

    Interesting....
  25. Folks we need some help on this one as our very own Grijalva along with Representative Rayhall are working at changing the text of the current act that would have adverse affect on wildlife and wildlife habitat!!!! Quote: This bill (see attached) completely changes the Wild Horse and Burro Act. Some highlights of this bill include: Removing the restriction on wild horses limited to areas where they were found in 1971, takes away our ability us use helicopter to round them up. Limits us to remove only those that we can adopt and only after we have exhausted all options to place them on public lands. Provides that they will keep their status as wild horses even after title which means we will still be responible for them. Among other things. Bottom line it provides for expansion of wild horse heards all over the public lands with very limited ability to controll them. Here is the link to the proposed changes to the Wild Horse And Burro Act... http://www.cmccotter.org/azuho/wild_burro.pdf cmc
