    ADA statement

If I may sidetrack the discussion for a moment - I'd like to thank the Arizona Deer Association for their commitment to our deer herds and recent funding of projects though the HPC process this past month. I think at times we may loose sight of the mission of the ADA and what they are doing on the ground for habitat. I'd hate to see it go unnoticed and at minimum recognize the hard work that the volunteers and board have done in the name of conservation for the deer in our state. From this deer hunter - Thank you! cmc
  5. I agree that you should shoot through your magazines once a month and then put fresh ammo in them. Regarding springs themselves, you can buy almost every magazine spring out there or aftermarket magazines from Midway or other sites. Much cheaper than the entire magazine. I would only keep firearms that are intended for self defense loaded and unload magazines for others like hunting rifles that won't be seeing any action for months. Note that if your ammo sees a lot of movement, be that bouncing around in the truck/car glove box, riding around on your side CCW or other, you should shoot that ammo and replace with fresh each month. Not that it really really matters but if you're a type A personality the powder which is normally pellets or flakes will start to deteriorate to fine powder thus not the original state that the manufacture made it in and will give off different characteristics. Anyone that can see or feel that difference probably has a sponsor and shoots so much a week that they never have a bullet sit around for more than 5 days.

    Wallow Fire

Lark you keep saying it's not worth anything but in talking with lumber company folks they tell me otherwise. If it can't be turned into board feet the value in making pellets is quite high. One interesting use was for powering manufacture plants and large farms instead of wind or solar. I'm sorry that you fail to see more uses of the the wood product than 2x4s & 2x6s, but they are out there. cmc

    Wallow Fire

Companies were successfully using helicopters after the rodeo/chediski fire to log the remote canyons and they do so in other states where the terrain dictates such use. I would believe in this climate they'd be happy to get the business. I will pick on the Forest Service in this case as the way I see it if they'd get on the ball over the winter and get things in action the small surrounding communities like Alpine and Greer would would be inundated with loggers spending their money which would help offset the anticipated lost revenue from visitors. cmc

    Wallow Fire

Ya I've been under the same rock as AZSLIM.... Wallow fire burned 538,049 acres A-S National Forests Timber and Stewardship Contracts Show that a total thus far of timber sale contracts are 10,357 acres. Ya that's progress. cmc

OR ---- they get with it so that the paperwork is clear and the green light is given for the timber companies to get in there and harvest all the chopsticks left standing.

    New Minimum Draw Weight

yote buster.... I think you can consider yourself luck having an archery mentor. I know I didn't have anyone for mentor with archery or bow hunting and for the most part have done it all by trial and error, lots of error. I completely agree we need to mentor beginners more. The problem is society isn't doing any help with marketing being spent. Kids want what mom, dad or big brother/sister shoots. But since he/she can't pull the weight will do so with less but still shoot the same arrow-broadhead setup with ill results. That's hard to sell. If you are successful at it with folks at the range please let me know how (not trying to sound pompous I really would like to know how folks sway folks away from the main stream items on the market these days). cmc

    New Minimum Draw Weight

I agree that technology has advanced in compounds in the past 10 years that warrants a drop in draw weight for those newer bows, but my fear is the rule states "bows" with draw weight of 30lbs or more. Thus recurves and older bows with 30lbs draw weights or more are all eligible. I personally feel that elk and buffalo should both be at 40lbs for minimum draw weight. Darr I'm jealous and hope that one of my children take up the desire to hunt with a bow and arrow. Good luck. cmc

    Ethical Bow Range

I have a lot of respect for someone that shot a critter at under 20yds, spot and stalk. ...A LOT... Try shooting an antelope spot and stalk at under 30yds. I love the saying that archers brag about how far - bow hunters brag how close. Crap, I'm turning into and old fart. Well that's proof I've read too many of Larks posts. cmc

HB 2072 Sale of big game tags

First version.... HB 2072 Introduced by Representative Weiers JP
  17. URGENT Proposed Archery Park In Oro Valley What: Town Council Meeting When: Wednesday, January 4, 2012 Time: 6 PM Where: Town of Oro Valley Council Chambers 11000 North La Cañada Drive Oro Valley, Arizona 85737 This is the final meeting. The Council will be voting to either approve or disapprove the Archery Park at this meeting.
  18. He has been invovled since the idea of the park was first thought of, in fact even before with brainstorming on a range. He was also in attendance at the meeting last night.
  19. First thing is yet more paperwork but this time it's submitting grant funding requests. If any of you know of groups that would be willing to help cover funding please let me know. thanks cmc
  20. Town Council Passed the proposal!!!!! Many thanks to the Mayor, Council Members, Parks and Rec Staff, as well Oro Valley Town Staff for their support and work on this endeavor. But a HUGE thanks to Gerry, Pete and Hank, the three gentleman that volunteered their time for over a year attending meetings, soliciting support, sitting and talking with opponents and mostly for being dedicated to the future of archery in our communities. Thanks guys!!!! cmc
  21. For your reading enjoyment - This would be the details for the park - http://lexicon.orovalleyaz.gov/agenda_publish.cfm?mt=ALL&get_month=1&get_year=2012&dsp=agm&seq=789&rev=0&ag=107&ln=2074&nseq=794&nrev=0&pseq=768&prev=0#ReturnTo2074
  22. Folks - The archery range is being opposed by various parties, recently the Tucson Audubon Society sent a letter opposing full development of the park as they feel archers will destroy the place. Other groups and local residents are making some pretty bogus claims to try and sway the Town Council to vote against the park. I can't stress enough that we need as many archers in attendance to show that we support archery in our communities and that it's a safe and fun activity. Thanks, cmc

    Traditional Archery

I would say I have been bit by the same bug and just took ownership of a used Bear Grizzly for my Christmas present from my wife and kids. I would say first go with a used bow if possible, go 15 lbs lighter than your compound, get arrows that are 'spine' properly for the recurve bow draw weight/length. That is far more important than on compounds, and it's important on them so don't overlook it. I'm still in search of the right spine and testing with bare shafts of all that I have and not found the perfect one. Once you have the bow in tune (see Eastons Bow Tuning guide - google it) ...then practice, practice, practice. Work on finding the same anchor spot and using proper form on your draw and you should start to group quickly. I guess you could look at this a few different ways. We took to hunting pigs in the HAM hunts so that while deer hunting we weren't distracted by a pig tag and spotting pigs. Now you could look at applying for a HAM tag so that in Jan you can hunt with your compound and in Feb HAM season use the recurve. I will say if I'm shooting well with my recurve by then I'm going that route but most of January I'll have my PSE Dream Season in my hand. If you're looking for a used bow try tradgang and archerytalk classified. I bought mine on ebay for less then I was seeing them on any other site. Your mileage may vary. one shot... sweet looking bucks and congrats on filling your tags. Stick and string makes it that much more memorable. I have yet to shoot anything like that with my compound which has kept me from switching to traditional for deer. Figure I'd start off on pigs and small game for a while. Maybe not. Who knows. Good luck. cmc
