    Muzzeloader Question

I'm pretty new to muzzleloading and am enjoying learning the the different aspects this hobby/obsession. My current setup is a hand-me-down Knight Wolverine with a Leupold 2.5-8x36 atop. I have only been working with Barnes 285 gr expander MZs and 295 gr powerbelts. With 100 gr of pyrodex pellets, both give me about 1.5-3 inches at 100 yds, but the Barnes strike the target about 7 inches higher than the powerbelts. Haven't run them theough the chronograph yet, but I'm sure the barnes will be flying significantly faster.

  18. I no longer have a use for this rifle. Winchester model 70 XTR Sporter Magnum in 7mm Rem. Post 64 (Push feed) action Factory synthetic stock. (I have long since given away the original wood) 24" barrel. Trigger jobbed to a very light 2 lbs or so. Leupold mounts. Some bluing wear on the muzzle and small scratches on the barrel near the end of the forearm of the stock. A few scratches on the triggerguard as well. I bought it used and have put 300 rounds through it since 1998. Shoots 139 grain hornadies and 140 gr. partitions around an inch if I do my part at the bench. Also included:RCBS die set, 100+ peices of brass (20 of the virgin). 40 handloads (67.5 gr. Re 22, 139 gr Hornady moly coated), 20 handloads (63.5 gr. Re 22, 160 gr partition). Would like to sell the whole lot for $400 shipped to your FFL ($375 FTF in or arounf the Tucson area). Also interested in trades for a bolt action in a non magnum cal (especially .6mm rem, 25-06, .308, 6.5x55, any of the 22 centerfires), leica 1200 rangefinder (scan or not), double action .357 or 44 mag, and probably some things I haven't listed. Let me know what you have. PM me with questions or picture requests.

Coues with a 7mm Rem Mag

A 150 gr. nosler BT is plenty of bullet for Coues' deer. No need for the extry expense in the partition load.

    After the shot

I have a buck 110 that I bought used aout 20 years ago. With that and my Knives of Alaska cub bear, I can dress and skin out a Coues' buck in under an hour. Once the carcass is back at camp, I've found that a commercial grade meat saw makes quick work of quartering and cutting chops.

    Bullet for 7mm mag?

When I shot 7mag, I always had good results with 140 gr Nosler Ballistic Tips. Lately, I've been messing around with 7mm STW and 120gr Ballistic Tips. Awesome groups, but I haven't hunted with them yet; so I can't tell you about their performance on deer or deer sized game.

    what sucks more

That's funny, Bass! Reminds me of when I worked in Yellowstone National Park. On our way to town, while still in the park, we'd occasionally stop our vehicle on the side of the road, get out and start pointing to the hills in the distance with our Binos and cameras in hand. Nothing would be there, just wanted to see how many tourists we could get to pull over! Once we had seven vehicle pulled off on the side of the road!

    270 WSM

I, too, am a bona-fide Leupold junkie and would second the recommendation that you look at a 4.5-14 or whatever other magnification tickles your fancy. However, that being said, I'm also really impressed with weaver's Grand Slam line of scopes. Lots of glass for the money......... I don't know nuthin' about factory ammo.... Been reloading too long!
