    Snowy Turkey Hunt

Adam, congrats!!! Absolutely awesome story. Reading it makes me think about our turkey hunt last year and how much fun it was! Reading this one sure kept me in suspense though, b/c it shows all the hard work you went through to get that bird. And I was out on the lake with my sister on Sunday attempting to get her a fish with one hour time on the water (they didn't like the cold), and it was real cold with snow on Woods Canyon Lake at the time! You had to be hunting your a off to be out there in that cold. Way to go man!!!

    Take a look

Yep, alot of these jobs are inside jobs. Someone broke into my sisters house and stole diamonds a few years ago...when they caught the guy, I could hardly believe it, but then again in retrospect, I believed it. Childhood friend. It's almost always an inside job, unless it's tweakers, or pros, or random.

    Any experience with Scarpa boots?

Scarpas are awesome. I had a lightweight pair last 5 years, don't remember the "type". I've hiked through 4 miles of knee deep water with them and they held up like water never touched them. Probably could have done that same hike several more times. (Friend of mine took me on a water hike and didn't tell me there was water in advance, nice huh?) I bought a heavyweight Scarpa boot, Scarpa Liskamm GTX, for winter and I've been extremely impressed with it. Took me a long time to break in that boot though, it was a little rough first few hikes out, but after I broke it in, it's been GNARLY! Had that for 5 years now. I've hiked in heavy snow with it. It doesn't breath at all though, but it climbs mountains like a beast. I only use it in December - February in AZ. I couldn't find the same light Scarpa boot, and everyone was talking about Asolos, so I bought a pair of those. I was very disappointed, had numerous problems. Had to replace the sole once because the front tore out (had to mail it in, took weeks), the metal lace holders bent, and now retiring the boot already, after just 2 years. I switched back to Scarpa Kailash. We'll see how it performs but I have high expectations. Scarpa is a great boot. I put my boots through some heavy off trail hiking. Before I owned Scarpa I always had trouble with boots lasting more than a year and it was getting expensive for my hikin/hunting habit. They were hard to justify the cost after wearing out so many pairs of boots but now they've easily paid for themselves for the kind of suffering I put them through, and my feet were always comfortable except for the Liskamm break-in. The European sizes are kind of a pain, and you might read some people recommending larger sizes, etc. By pain I mean you might see a pair that looks close in size for sale with little inventory left. Don't be tempted to buy the wrong size b/c it is on sale. I recommend just finding the exact European size for your US size, nothing larger, and you should be fine. Only buy larger if that is what you usually do with other boots.

zero my rife and using turrets

No negative intended. But my understanding, 300 win mag to 300 is not hard at all. Its one of the flatter trajectories out to 300. Wind is your worst enemy.

    Foot Lbs Energy

You guys rock, thanks...! Great answers. Yep. I guess that's the good thing about long distance shooting. Hard to nail the target, so hitting the chrony shouldn't be too difficult. More difficult shooting above it, and hoping the bullet doesn't drop right into the chrony. LOL...thanks again

    Foot Lbs Energy

Apologies, the question I posed wasn't quite clear. I understand math, physics, ballistics tables, and thank you all as some of your answers are very informative! The question should simply have been: How can foot pounds of energy be measured at the target? I understand the inputs of ballistic coefficient, bullet velocity, wind, altitude, temp, pressure, bullet grain, humidity, etc. But what if the result is higher or lower, as it naturally won't match exactly. Was just curious what the scientific way of measuring the actual foot lbs of energy delivered (without destroying the target, if possible, pun aside)? If there are easy ways to do. Surely there is some way science has verified the data in the charts? It sounds like knowing the actual velocity at the target would be useful. I suppose if one knew the drops at various distances for the same bullet they could plug it into a multiple equations and try to solve for the variable, or even a diff eq of sort. Just curious if folks have found published bullet drops to be exactly accurate, or some marketing hype and not as accurate as touted, or better than advertised. Along with bc's. Again, apologies my question wasn't clear and actually sounded like I was asking for a ballistic table. I guess I was wondering a way to verify the table and/or the drops plus minus that we see. rclouse79, rcdinaz, lancetkenyon and pwrguy, THANKS! Lonne

    Foot Lbs Energy

I guess some silly ways might be, put a chronograph at the target (don't hit it!) and measure the velocity, and then determine foot pounds that way. Or, shoot a watermelon, and if it blows up, a watermelon requires n (say 100) foot pounds to do so, so it's at least >= n (100). Just curious. Probably not any easy way, and not really necessary, but was just wondering if there were any good ways to do this. Maybe doing with the chronograph is actually quite scientific as long as one didn't hit it :-)

    Foot Lbs Energy

Thanks - I'm aware that this number is calculated in ballistics tables. Much like a chronograph measures muzzle velocity of bullet, are there any feasible ways to measure the foot pounds of energy impacted at the target? :-) Thanks, Lonne
