Ditto on all. When get up at 3am, I put my jacket on and get whatever stuff ready that's needed. Before I start my hike, I strip down to nothing but plain cotton pants (fleece lined if it's real cold), and a short or long sleeve cotton t-shirt. And cotton sucks period, but it works ok in Arizona as long as not real humid, real wet and rainy, or don't sweat alot. I hike my butt off some elevation gaining hill, with or without a pack, and immediately when I get to the top of the hill the first thing I do is take off my t-shirt and put on a thermal long sleeve, and a light wool jacket, wool army cap, wool gloves. I notice alot of others wear their heavy stuff climbing up hill, which is a big no no. Not only do they sweat, and when they get to the top the sweat makes them colder, or the sweat catches wind and tips off the animals with the smell. Hike up, generate body heat. Think about it, you're just an engine where your heart is the RPMs redlining up the hill. As soon as you get to the top, put all your warm gear on and insulate (trap) the heat in. You'll be warm for hours. Alot of guys swear on synthetic camo stuff, and it's awesome, but not all of it is great. Underarmour is pretty good. You can' t beat the lightness (low weight) of synthetic gear. But then again I was in a recent hail storm, in wet wool, and I was warm as heck, while buddies of mine were cold. Summary: when you hike period, up or down, strip to minimum lightweight pants and t-shirt, no hat unless something light to block from sun. You'll be cold for 5 minutes but will quickly generate heat and be very warm hiking up but not hot or sweating, in other words you will be comfortable. As soon as you stop moving, put all your warm gear on, or the cold will come on fast, and start glassing like crazy. Good luck. And I know your question was, what beanie can I use I won't sweat in when I hike? But I don't think it exists yet. There are lots of claims out there, but truth is different from marketing hype. Underarmour has some nice beanies. Or go with Army Surplus wool beanies, they're great and only $7. But never hike with them! You don't need to put them on until you quit moving. Lonne

Interesting. I just hunted Unit 10 for the first time. Absolutely beautiful! It was a cow tag hunt. We were following a herd before the hunt and saw them on a few occasions with a herd bull, but they quickly disappeared on the hunt and we couldn't connect. I was thinking cow hunt, should be easy, but wow was suprised how hard of a hunt it was. We spotted several bulls, along with several mule deer bucks and does, and at least two different herds of javelina. I figured typical hunt. You spot everything you're hunting for, and the cow elks know they are being hunted. Spotted some cows bedded down, but realized definitely need to improve my glassing on bedded down animals. (I tell myself that every year!) I was really wishing I had a bull tag. I'm not even a random sample, just one group of four hunters. But seems in line with what we saw in the grand scheme of this recommendation. Of course, much I don't know, so I won't draw conclusions without facts and history, which I'm sure alot more of you guys could offer up. If this is truly the case or not. Despite not filling my tag, which was a huge goal of mine and I didn't think I'd come home empty handed, nor did any of the guys I was with, we had a great time spotting all the game. We worked VERY hard but just weren't lucky. Lonne

Interesting. Re-posting that here. http://www.coueswhitetail.com/forums/topic/36422-you-be-the-judge/ Everyone down there has seen some crazy stuff. We found some scout camps on ridges, smuggler camps in deep "can't see from above" thick brushed canyons. Ran into a group going heading north through the canyon into wilderness while we were heading south back towards roads and camp at dark. Had a stand off, and long story short myself and the friend I was hunting with - we decided the standoff wasn't worth losing, we were probably outgunned, and we might think twice while they wouldn't, and climbed out of the very steep canyon with a nice dose of adrenaline where a fall wouldn't have been pretty. Amazing what you can do with adrenaline flowing. Last year we were hiking through the hills at night on the way back to camp and border patrol pulled into our camp and started asking questions, sounded like someone called the border patrol on us.

Seen some black king and red racer snakes at 7000 ft, but only timber rattlers at 6000 feet. Wow, 9000 feet?

That's totally awesome James! Good ending to a bad start. Some people have a lot of nerve. They'll get what's coming eventually. -
Yep, lots of people hike/hunt in there.

I think the tags track the Dow. LOL. I've seen them diminish faster and demand grow every year for about 5 years. It seemed like when the economy was in bad shape you could just go to an AZGFD office and pick up one for any unit you wanted. Now, you've gotta move fast if you want one.

Kidso's bear calling seminar was awesome!
lonne replied to Couestracker's topic in Black Bear or Grizzly Bear hunts
Sorry y'all missed it. I can definitely identify with missing it b/c of work :-) Hopefully there will be more down the road. A gentlemen that's a member of the club grinds knives for raffles and members. Probably couestracker could tell us more. I'm not a member of the club so don't know much, and I live kind of far, but it looks like an awesome club to be a part of. -
Looks like someone made a great shot!

Kidso's bear calling seminar was awesome!
lonne replied to Couestracker's topic in Black Bear or Grizzly Bear hunts
It was really awesome. I thought the addiction part of it was especially relevant. Good info on finding good habitat and calling hard! Thanks to PVCI for holding it, looks like a really fun group! That guy Eddy was pretty cool too, and now, is there anyone who attended that doesn't now want one of those special knives? :-) -
Cool pics!

It's ridiculous. More and more roads, they're just going to keep paving. People gonna keep building fancy houses here, fancy houses there...people will argue we're not encroaching on wilderness, but then how do you explain giant cities and how they got there today?

Almost every prickly pear I look at in August always seems to be ripe. Picking it and eating it is fun, but I always have cactus spines in my hands for a week. Wonder what the bears feel like. LOL. Anything ripe now is Primo Cream of the Crop
