Glad you enjoyed the area and got to see some different country. That is definitely NOT a good time of year to be running a fever.

We just started using a Tri-clawps so don't have much hard data to share. We put it on our heaviest tripod and so far have just had the kids shooting the .243 off of it. So far it's working well in terms of them hitting the target while getting used to something that recoils more than the bb gun! Siwash has a lot of good info up there.

There's plenty of physics factors involved here. The last year you could hunt fall turkey with a rifle here I hit one at 20 yards with a 180 grain. One shake and it was field dressed. An elk hit at 300 yards behind the shoulder and a Coues hit at 150 yards behind the shoulder will probably have different results. Interesting topic.

Your "base camp" is in a good place to accomplish your goals. You might even be able to find some of the newly reintroduced desert bighorn from there. It will be tough to find complete solitude, but crowds of hikers shouldn't be an issue in mid-June. A little drive north through the town of Oracle and you can head towards Peppersauce Canyon. Any knob above that will be a good place to find deer that time of year.

Where will you be staying? Any of the resort type hotels in the Catalina Foothills (Ventana Canyon, La Paloma, El Conquistador) will provide the chance to see Coues close by and probably have javelina in the parking lots most mornings. If your schedule allows, check out the International Wildlife Museum. Life size and shoulder mount taxidermy from all over the world. They also get javelina in the parking lot from time to time.

I've seen that area with a few hunters and I've seen it covered up with a lot of hunters. Unfortunately, you probably won't know the pressure situation until opening morning. Definitely worth scouting, though. Good luck.

Stopped by the Dick's in Oro Valley and lo and behold...22 ammo! Now if I can find a place with .357/.38 special ammo I will be able to feed all the guns I have through the summer.
