Turkeys do what they want to do, when they want to and how they want to. They can be the smartest and dumbest bird alive. If a gobbler has hens, hes real, real hard, next to impossible to break from them. We had one going this morning real well, about 300 yards away but on another ridgeline. A pretty decent canyon in between with a lot of deadfall. It was too much to break him over. After about 10 minutes of him gobbling real well, hens started yelping around him, so we knew it wasn't gonna happen. If you know what direction they normally work after coming off the roost, it helps to be somewhere in that general area they're headed. Once you know a bird has committed, stop calling. They have eyesight like crazy and can pinpoint where something is. It can take a bird a while to come in and if he is committed, he usually will give off a gobble every few minutes to try and figure out what direction the yelps are coming from. The more you yelp, the more he thinks that hen is coming to him. You're basically trying to reverse nature in how Turkey operate with breeding. Hens go to gobblers.... Anyways, after the pressure of the junior hunt, plus the first hunt, most of the birds are educated and pushed a ways back from main access roads. Been a good year for turkeys where weve been. Much more callable and vocal compared to last year. Good luck.

2 of my kids drew this as well. Another kid I know drew it also.

Mornings seem slow. Roosted a bunch of gobblers this evening all alone. Seems like it could be just getting ready to start going well. The evening has been more productive than the mornings the last few days on San Carlos.

Many areas/roads up on the highest, north facing slopes have huge drifts still. If they dont plow them prior to the hunt, access on them will be difficult.
-
Will be up on the 2nd hunt. Forecast is looking like prime Turkey hunting season for AZ..... windy and chilly.

Couldnt make it yesterday from the alpine side. Amazing to see so much water in the mountains. Quite a bit of snow left but melting quick. Warm few days ahead so that may help.....

23. No doubt. U1 is not what it used to be. Lots of late rifle tags have hurt the quality of bulls. You'll still have a fun hunt in gorgeous country, but if you're after a giant, 23.

Excellent story and great buck.

I love cutting wood with the family. Good time out in the woods. Lot of hard work. If the power goes out, nice to have a wood stove. If you can physically get out and cut, I’d take a wood stove all day. My opinion though.

Depends on moisture. If there's snow the roads can be bad. I hunted it several years ago. We were fortunate to take a cow prior to a big storm system moving in. They reduced tag numbers this year so itll be a tough draw. Been getting more and more difficult to draw without the decrease in tag numbers. Yes its self guided.

Need an online system to avoid this kind of stuff. Completely doable nowadays.

Multi-function GPS watch....who wears one...is it worth it?
Coues79 replied to Viper's topic in Other Hunting Gear
I had the traverse and really liked the watch.... I set it down one day and lost it unfortunately. There's a lot of cool features they have. I like being able to check the vertical accents, steps, mileage covered etc. The wrist heart rate monitor is pretty cool as well. I am going to get a Garmin Fenix soon... -
Thanks. Still available

You may not have been calling poorly.... those things have a mind of their own and do what they want to do. Real tough when hens are already involved in the mix.

Itll be a good morning and day tomorrow. Winds are still pretty nasty up here. Not much gobbling where we were. Hang in there.

Saw some camps in 16 in new mexico with roaring fires this past weekend while Turkey hunting.... during red flag conditions and 30 mph winds. Gotta love selfish stupidity.

Drew a muzzy youth hunt for my boy and a rifle tag for myself... both deer. 0 for 3 on elk apps.
