  1. Well, other than changing diapers, the only other reason I would be up at 2:30 in the morning would be because opening day was in a couple hours. Well opening day isn't tomorrow for me so I must be changin diapers. My first born child and son was born on Tuesday morning at 2:05. I couldn't be any happier. Not even a 135 inch coues could make me any happier. Here are a couple pics of him. He was a couple weeks early, but I'm not complainin one bit. Love the little guy tons.
  2. Thank you so much for everyone's kind words. I sure am a happy daddy! The joy one experiences as a parent can only truly be measured once you have a child. I have never been so grateful and blessed to have him. I know all of you parents felt the same way when your children were born too. Its great! Bruce Ive always felt that being a father can make you feel like a woman, mad as heck one minute and laughing the next You hit the nail right on the head. I've also noticed that dang near every time I look at him I get a big ol' lump in my throat and get all gushy. I was wonderin' what happened, but I can clearly see that this is normal manly behavior that all manly hunters must go through. Thanks guys and gals

    Prickly Pear season

I went out last weekend and picked about 50 or so, brought them home, rinsed them off and singed the spiney's off with the stove burners. They have a great flavor but a ton of seeds. Took some to school and showed the students that beautiful color they have. There are very few food items that have such a brilliant color to them.

    The sportsmans channel

The only outdoor channel Cox would allow me to purchase was "Versus". That channel is pretty much worthless when it comes to watching good hunting. I bundled with Qwest and now have DirectTV. I get MOR, Outdoor Channel and Versus. I like it. Between the Outdoor Channel and MOR, I have hunting almost all the time that I am home and could be watching TV. Instead of VS, which will show hunting predominantly after the midnight hour.

    The well is in!!!

Country looks really familiar and beautiful. I have taken a decent coues buck in those hills in the very far back. That's been a few years though. Congratulations on your move!
  6. Peach Cobbler made with a little 7-up in a dutch oven is really hard to beat. I mean really hard to beat.

    what are you guys doing?

I ride an elliptical 5 days a week for 45-60 min. with a 25 pound pack on my back. On Saturday morning, I'll head down to the track and do a warm up mile, jog 4 miles and then walk a cool down mile. Sunday is a rest day. It works really well. I've been doing this for a long time and every time(18 months) I get into the hills and start haulin' a mountain, I can tell I'm in great shape. Both lungs and legs. There have been times that my resting heart rate has been into the mid to upper 40's. Usually early in the morning before I roll out of bed. I especially like the elliptical because you get a great workout and it doesn't pound away at your joints. Casey, it sounds like you have a good thing going for you. You also sound like a big ol' boy too. IMO, I would be careful running or jogging with a pack on your back. It doesn't take much to get your discs out of align, rupture one of them or start having wearing on your knees. To me, it seems like a lot of jarring could be occuring on your joints and your back. Be careful if you're gonna keep doing that. I know you're young, but it doesn't take much to start wearing those joints down and you definitly don't want to be sidelined for your upcoming Dec. Coues deer hunt. Hope it keeps working out for you. Good Luck.

    Scent

That's frickin' sick man. While your at it though, if you're really gonna do this, you can't forget to pack in a plastic bottle to urinate into. All that hard work with the poo would go to waste if you contaminate the ground with liquid human waste. I thought I was a die-hard hunter. Anyone who does that has me or anyone I know, beat by a mile. I hope you're joking and just drivin the point home about using the wind correctly.

    25 WSSM

I plan on purchasing a new deer rifle this year and I was wondering about the 25 WSSM. I plan on having this rifle solely for coues and putting the 7Mag up and using it for my elk hunts. I am wondering if anyone has any input or feedback on this caliber or the 243 short mag or anything in close comparison caliber wise. Which one is a better round, is there much difference, what would you do and why? I'm not a gun expert by any means necessary, but I know many of you have great knowledge so I value your opinions.

    25 WSSM

I know I would not regret getting a 270 Short Mag. I have heard a lot of great things about the round and how much people seem to love that gun. This purchase will also be for my wife. She will be shooting this gun in the future as well. This is why I am opting to go with the smaller caliber, rather than the 270 Short. She is small and dainty and can't handle the recoil real well. I need a gun with that in mind. Some day, I will get a 270 Short. Not with this purchase though. Again thanks for the input.

    25 WSSM

I've already heard a lot of good info. Thanks a bunch guys. I have also considered the 25-06 and I will probably start thinking about this round a little harder. My eldest brother shoots this round for his coues deer and from what I know, he loves the gun. Superb accuracy and high velocities. I do not reload and with a baby coming and a full teaching schedule ahead of me, I cannot and would not be able to find the time to get into it. So, those 40 dollar boxes of ammo would add up quickly with that .257 weatherby. It does sound like a great round however. It will be about a month before I make the purchase so I still have a little bit of time to ponder. If anyone still has any more opinions, knowledge or advice, please keep it comin'.

    Ethics VS Law

That is a tough call. I would hate to come across that situation too. As a law abiding citizen, the best thing IMO would be to let it be. There are laws and rules put into place to protect wildlife. I'm not saying it is the ethical thing to do, but imagine the trouble we could have if there was a loophole that stated it was ok to put down animals that appear to have death from an natural injury be imminent. All sorts of trouble could occur. Another thing, imagine if a warden were to hear the shot, find you and the dead animal. You'd be in a boat load of trouble, not to mention the possibilities of not huntin' for a few years. Not an easy call man, but I think you did the right thing.

    2007 Coues Contest

I tossed this idea around in my head as well. I think it would be cool to have a women's category, however, some women may want to be in the mix with everyone else. Maybe we could get a woman's input on it.

    Gun Control

Yes, but when the 2nd amendment has failed us time after time with murder, maybe its time change it like many amendments have been changed before. By the way I went studied goverment at ASU and the only reason that law was written, was to protect us from the British if we ever needed to again! I think we are safe now. NO MORE GUNS. WOW! What a nerd
