    pics from scouting

That's some nice lookin' country you are in. The 15's will be nice to add to your hunting equipment and surely help to glass up some more deer! I HATE RATTLESNAKES. I HATE RATTLESNAKES. I HATE RATTLESNAKES. In the early season, I get boogered pretty trying to walk when the grass is high. If I see a snake, I'm pretty much done. I do the tail between the legs gig and get pretty freaked out. I was just speaking with my dad about my uncle and cousin out scouting. I guess they came up on a big rattlesnake that had just started to devour a cottontail. They were checkin' it out for a few minutes and it had started to rattle. The scary thing is, my uncle could not here the rattle and they were right next to it! Now that's dang scary right there. With the old age, that frequency that the rattle is in can no longer be picked up in his ears Time to get out the gaiters I'd say. I invested in some last year and have no regrets at all. Might think about getting a pair. If nothing else, at least you'll have a piece of mind knowing you have them on.
  6. Welcome, We do have an initiation ritual. You have to give the Unit, Gps coordinates, and set up a trip to the area that you have your camera set up Sorry we gotta do that to ya, but its only fair

    IPI Bino Manager

Thanks for doing the field work and research for us Doug . I was searching for something other than the crooked horn system too. I have the same complaints; elastic stretching too far, adjusters slipping etc . I'm gonna give this system a shot and see how it works. Looks pretty nice. Especially if you have some expensive glass and have to go busting through some brush . It's nice to have them protected without having to pull them inside of a jacket. Thanks

    crummy dads

A few years ago I had some buddies from Mississippi come out to go Mule Deer hunting down in a southern unit. One of them took a real nice 2 point and all we did was threw some ice in his chest cavity as well as around his inside parts of his hind quarters. We left him out overnight to chill down and during the day, we wrapped him up in some old sleeping bags to keep the cold inside of him and that worked really well. It was in the upper 70's low 80's during the day, but the deer kept well.

    First deer hunt a success!!

AWESOME!! Congratulations to you and your boy. Nice looking buck too!
  11. That's just a small set of sheds off of a mulie. Not a real big deal man. Just Kidding. It's a TOAD of a coues buck. Hope you nail him this year!

    what to do

IMO, I would take your boy into the area and give it a shot. Like has been mentioned before, you have to catch that big boy out in the daytime. That's could be a struggle to do anyways. That deer didn't get that big by being stupid and chances are, you may not be able to find him during the daytime anyways. But, if you did get the chance to have your son take him, and then have him pass on it, you would have to be prepared to possibly never see that buck again in your lifetime and kick yourself later for not taking the opportunity when you had the chance. He may get shot, lion killed or some other bizarre occurance. To me, I would rather have my son have a chance at a monster buck like that if the chance presented itself. If he did shoot it, at least you were part of the hunt and he would always have that memory of you being with him and vice versa (you'd also be the worlds best guide ever and best dad ever too!) As far as the future and having him being spoiled with taking big bucks, I say "whatever". Hunting in this state is going to get harder and harder in the upcoming years. I don't think the opportunity to take a quality buck like this will be as great in the future, so, why not take advantage when you can? I honestly doubt that you would regret seeing your boy shoot this buck if the chance presents itself. Hope you get him! BTW, that is a PIG of a buck. I'd say he is in the 120 class range as well. He's absolutely huge and one buck I would love to see in the hills!!

    AZ Elkin'

    Sweet bull man. Congratulations!
  18. Well, other than changing diapers, the only other reason I would be up at 2:30 in the morning would be because opening day was in a couple hours. Well opening day isn't tomorrow for me so I must be changin diapers. My first born child and son was born on Tuesday morning at 2:05. I couldn't be any happier. Not even a 135 inch coues could make me any happier. Here are a couple pics of him. He was a couple weeks early, but I'm not complainin one bit. Love the little guy tons.
  19. Thank you so much for everyone's kind words. I sure am a happy daddy! The joy one experiences as a parent can only truly be measured once you have a child. I have never been so grateful and blessed to have him. I know all of you parents felt the same way when your children were born too. Its great! Bruce Ive always felt that being a father can make you feel like a woman, mad as heck one minute and laughing the next You hit the nail right on the head. I've also noticed that dang near every time I look at him I get a big ol' lump in my throat and get all gushy. I was wonderin' what happened, but I can clearly see that this is normal manly behavior that all manly hunters must go through. Thanks guys and gals

    Prickly Pear season

I went out last weekend and picked about 50 or so, brought them home, rinsed them off and singed the spiney's off with the stove burners. They have a great flavor but a ton of seeds. Took some to school and showed the students that beautiful color they have. There are very few food items that have such a brilliant color to them.

    The sportsmans channel

The only outdoor channel Cox would allow me to purchase was "Versus". That channel is pretty much worthless when it comes to watching good hunting. I bundled with Qwest and now have DirectTV. I get MOR, Outdoor Channel and Versus. I like it. Between the Outdoor Channel and MOR, I have hunting almost all the time that I am home and could be watching TV. Instead of VS, which will show hunting predominantly after the midnight hour.

    The well is in!!!

Country looks really familiar and beautiful. I have taken a decent coues buck in those hills in the very far back. That's been a few years though. Congratulations on your move!
  23. Peach Cobbler made with a little 7-up in a dutch oven is really hard to beat. I mean really hard to beat.
  24. Coues79

    nice buck

Dude, when that buck finishes growing, you're gonna have a monster buck running around in them there hills. Definitly a TOAD!

    what are you guys doing?

I ride an elliptical 5 days a week for 45-60 min. with a 25 pound pack on my back. On Saturday morning, I'll head down to the track and do a warm up mile, jog 4 miles and then walk a cool down mile. Sunday is a rest day. It works really well. I've been doing this for a long time and every time(18 months) I get into the hills and start haulin' a mountain, I can tell I'm in great shape. Both lungs and legs. There have been times that my resting heart rate has been into the mid to upper 40's. Usually early in the morning before I roll out of bed. I especially like the elliptical because you get a great workout and it doesn't pound away at your joints. Casey, it sounds like you have a good thing going for you. You also sound like a big ol' boy too. IMO, I would be careful running or jogging with a pack on your back. It doesn't take much to get your discs out of align, rupture one of them or start having wearing on your knees. To me, it seems like a lot of jarring could be occuring on your joints and your back. Be careful if you're gonna keep doing that. I know you're young, but it doesn't take much to start wearing those joints down and you definitly don't want to be sidelined for your upcoming Dec. Coues deer hunt. Hope it keeps working out for you. Good Luck.
