I ran on to a couple of these owls while working construction back around the beginning of the year. They were in a culvert exactly like the one's you have poster there. They are pretty funny to sit and watch. They'll let you get pretty close. Wouldn't want to have any claws sunk into my face though. Probably wouldn't make for a pretty sight.

Does anyone have any Monsoon Rain Totals to date?
Coues79 posted a topic in Miscellaneous Items related to Coues Deer
Just wondering if anyone has any monsoon rain totals for the summer so far. Maybe from a rain gauge at their home or from some other source? It looks like some places get hit hard every dang day. Here in Mesa, we got hit again last night. It seemed like a pretty good one. Just don't have a rain gauge at my apartment. -
I was thinking the same thing. It looks like a jungle wherever that is. Without any specifics, what unit is this in? These deer should be some porkers in a few weeks.

Does anyone have any Monsoon Rain Totals to date?

I look at weather.com about 3-4 times daily. Been doing it for about 2-3 years. Never even new about that. Thanks. I know my dad has had about 2 to 3 inches so far at his place over south of Safford. Father in-law says it been rainin' pretty good out at the tomato farms North of Willcox too. I hope to get out next weekend and see things greenin' up. It's kinda hard to see the concrete and asphalt here in the city benefiting from the rain. I hate the city. Why'd I move up here? -
Yeah that's pretty much it. I would rather have dutch oven cobbler that way over any other. It really hits the sweet tooth's spot. Don't be too generous with the 7up. It can get soupy. You'll have to tinker around with it to suit your specific desire. OOOHHH boy, I can't wait until huntin' season. My mouth is waterin' already.

That's a pretty cool website. It made me hungry to be out in the hills and enjoyin' some good ol' dutch oven cookin'. Has anyone ever tried makin' dutch oven' peach cobbler with 7up? If not, your missin' out. It's pretty darn good.

This buck sure looks like he is gonna hold a pretty rack. I like the bucks coues bucks that carry a tall rack. That's a cool picture.

I've killed two bears. Both I imagine by pure luck and just being in the right place at the right time. I killed them both right around 2:00 p.m. right in the middle of the heat of the day. They were both heading to a water hole within 1/2 mile from where I found them. Actually, they both found me. One of them was a big boy. He was an 1/8 away from making the all time book. I just happened to be in the right place at the right time. Don't know much else than bein' lucky. Maybe check some tanks and check for sign around them. Check for available food source as well.

Chorizo, egg, potato and cheese wrapped in a Mi Casa tortilla. That's opening morning. Once all the adrenaline is gone and my legs hurt on the second morning, it's pretty much whatever is quick and easy. Protien takes more time to digest than simple carbs. Mixing the two shouldn't leave you hungry in an hour. Be careful with chorizo and eggs. It doesn't make for a pleasurable experience in a tent or trailer with other people around.

I would stay to the middle to the south end of the unit. The North country has been hit really bad with drought. Not a lot of deer in there. It's been steadily declining over the past few years.

Got two of three in the mail today. My elk tag and deer tag. Not the one I was hoping to get first, (my wife's december tag) but hope it gets here by Monday or Tuesday. I'll feel a lot better and it will finalize this messy year for the draw.

I just went down to the Warehouse in Mesa and tried on the eberlstock's as well. They are nice. If my memory serves me right, I thought the price tag was $169.00, but maybe that wasn't the Just One. I did happen to notice one of the eberlstock's at 259.00. Didn't pay much attention to it once I saw the price tag. I know I have been to all 3 of the warehouses in the valley and I feel that by far, the one in Goodyear has the better pack selection out of the 3. The one in Mesa was struggling for a while, but now they have seemed to have brought some more in. I'll be down there in a couple weeks to pick either a badland's or an eberlstock up.

Cabelas or the Sportsmens Warehouse?
Coues79 replied to drgonzales's topic in Coues Deer Hunting in Arizona
Haven't had a chance to get to Cabela's but I sure do love goin' in to the Warehouse. I usually don't get much when I go, but I like to get away and just be in a place where there is a lot of cool stuff. -
Sorry to here that man. Don't really know what else to say.

I personally like the Mossy Oak Brush camo. It has a little bit of orangey, rusty color in it, which where I hunt, there are those colors especially in manzanita and mountain mohagony stuff. Some of the leaves on these bushes will turn that reddish/orangey color. I think sometimes the lighter colored stuff sticks out in the shady areas, but I still own some.

You keep the license and it is only good for the remainder of this year. If you want to hunt pigs, you will have to get an 07' license too. That information should be available in Sept/Oct. But, the good thing with that will be that you will already have an 07' license for next years big game draw. Pretty much all you can do with the license you have now, is purchase an OTC tag for archery deer or general bear. You can hunt small game all you want.

I believe it was 131 and some change. Not a bad buck huh!

weather.com is calling for significant rain for friday, friday night and saturday, around the south and eastern parts of the state. Hope it dumps for 24 hours straight in the mountains. Help one of those bucks to get to 135" so my wife can edge out Mace's buck.

Summer camo - NON-COTTON!
Coues79 replied to DesertBull's topic in Miscellaneous Items related to Coues Deer
That under armor stuff is legit. I used that back when I played baseball in Alabama. It dries really quick, and you don't get super hot in it. You can wear it in the winter too. It's called "COLD GEAR". I usually wear it under my camo in the winter for a little extra warmth. However, they do make "HOT GEAR" to be used in the summer. It's not western patterns, but I love the stuff. -
If I remember correctly, there was an idea a while back about people sending in their white slips on whether or not they harvested an animal during their hunt. If that were made mandatory, and base your next years ability to hunt that specific species, that would help somewhat in making the odds a little better. You might even be able to weed out a few tree huggers too. I don't think there would be anything wrong with making it mandatory to send in your success of a hunt anyways. It would help get a better idea of harvesting data. Just an idea. That seems like it would be easy to implement into the system. Not sure if there are any legalities about doing something like that.

Need good bino's, your opinion counts!
Coues79 replied to mulie hunter's topic in Coues Deer Hunting in Arizona
I've looked through the monarchs as well. For my eyes, they were really nice. But it's all about your own eyes. There are a lot of glasses that I can't look through. They hurt my eyes pretty bad. I would shop around a little bit. Hit Cabela's or Sportsman's and look through all the glasses that you want to for your price range. Price them there, and then see if you can get better deals elsewhere. Personally, I feel you have to just find a pair you're comfortable with. There are a lot of good glasses out there nowadays. -
I could never use 15x's without a tripod. Even 10x's are a little shakey unless you are sitting or leaning against something steady. Do you use a monopod or walking stick to prop them on? I agree with DesertBull. You gotta have a tripod if you're using 15's. There is literally no comparison between glassing with one and without one. It definitely makes the difference, it's worth the extra weight on your back and it will assuredly help you find more deer.

Thanks for your guys' input. I feel comfortable now after hearing about them. The badlands do look pretty spacious and roomy. I like to carry a decent size pack with the option of hauling meat out if I have too. I always seem to get into the country too far to drag a buck back out. That sucks, especially in coues country.
-
I was wanting to start a thread like this too. I am needing to get a new pack. I bought a pack mule external frame pack last year. It was the noisiest dang thing I've ever put on my back. The hinge points on the hip make some serious squeeking noises with every step. The badlands, and the eberlstock's look pretty nice. Anyone have any luck with the badlands? Do they have enough room to throw a hindquarter or two from a coues in there? I've only used an external frame pack and never an internal. How do they do in the hills as far as comfortability and use for hauling game out?

Don't know what to say. Someone screwed up. Hope you get your problem resolved and get a tag out of it. Based on what Lark said on another thread, I'd go down there and raise some heck. Take all your statements with you and find out what's up. I wouldn't be surprised if they just credit your account for the charge. That would be the easiest thing for them to do.
