  1. As I was glancing through... WON'T SAY SHOPPING.... in the Cabela's catalog, an IDEA came to me. If I bought one of these portable stands that could raise me up 17' above the ground would it be legal, ethical, or useful to pull off the road and set it up to get above the trees while mule deer hunting???? What are your thoughts?? Lee

    Portable stands

Yes I am talking about those tripod stands. Would you need to get them 1/4 mile in from the road? Lee

    critters

Yes I agree..............but there is only one thing I like about them.............I have seen them killing rattlers. Nice pics Peckl1 thanks for sharing them. I'll like to see that coyote in my crosshairs. Ernesto, thanks for the kind words, but that coyote is not breathing anymore. Lee

My checks for deer and javelina were cashed yesterday. Lee
  6. In 36a down by the refuse you can see a group of antelope. Also for the past 3 years there has been an antelope running with a group of mule deer does. I haven't got a good enough picture of it to post, yet, maybe this year. Lee
  7. Doug, I just registered. as gamehauler said thanks for putting this on. Oh, by the way, I am enjoying the 15 x56's and the olympus I bought from you guys. A picture from this morning. Lee

  10. Ok I don't post a lot. Just when I have some thing to say. Well yesterday Michael and I went out to do a little quail hunting. And a little quail hunting is what we did. I couldn't find very many quail today at all. The first place we stopped was a water trough that had a couple of quail at the trough. We walked them down and I took one shot and missed. The birds were pretty safe today. When we got back to the truck I had a flat tire. We put my spare on and went back to hunting. We stopped at several of my honey hole type spots and only Michael got a shot that connected on a bird. As I said earlier, the birds were pretty safe today. Then we planned on making a circle on a few other spots. As we were headed to the first spot my spare went flat. Now what to do. I have a compressor in the truck. So we put the first tire back on as it looked like it would hold air the longest. After airing it up we took off. It lasted about a mile. We stopped again to air it up. While we aired it up a jeep waggoneer came up. Well really it just drove past. Thay did not slow down or roll their window down to ask if we needed help. They just rolled on by. Michael looked at me and I just said they were probably wildlife conservationists. You know the folks that wear the L.L. Bean type clothes and won't have anything to do with folks wearing camo. Now you have to think about where we were. At least 10 miles from a paved road and using a compressor to air up a tire. It took us about 30 minutes of airing up, driving, and airing up until we reached a main dirt road. Then along came a lady and her son who had been out quail hunting. They stopped to see if we needed any help. Hunters do take care of each other. She gave us a couple of cans of flat fix. She would not take any money for them. Once we used them the tire now lasted a few miles more before we had to stop. We made it to Arivaca road and had someone come and get us. Now this is where Discount Tire comes in. I took the spare home last night and then today I took it to Discount. I expected to have to buy a new tire and then have one of the tires warranted because I always get the certifacates for my tires. Mark at the store on 6th ave in Tucson says "Well you bought the spare from us 7 years ago and the warranty is still good." To cut this long story short I got two new tires for under $100.00. Those tires sell for $168.00 plus tax and balancing each. And if they fail due to raod hazard they get replaced. For my money you can't beat Discount.

    Quail and Tires

David, sorry you had bad service from them in Phoenix. Down here in Tucson they have been great. I've been going to the same store for about 10 years now. Lee

    Quail and Tires

Ernesto, That was my spare. It got me out of the desert many times. This time was just too much. I fully expected to have to buy a new tire for it. When they said the warranty was still good and replaced it I decided I would not buy tires from anyone else.

    Cabelas

Since I was in central Texas this week I had a chance to stop by the store in Buda. The things people have said about the differrence in Glendale and Buda are True!!!! The mounts look a lot better and the staff is real friendly and helpful. What a difference. I would recommend stopping in if you ever get the chance. Lee

    Hunters Who Care

Well, my boss just changed my schedule. I will not make the 21st cleanup. However, I will be out in 36a next week to scout and do a little cleanup on my own. if anyone is around stop by and say hello. Lee
  16. Well, here I sit in Dallas watching a bunch of people take a test. I teach people how to run hotels. For the next 4 hours I will sit and stew over the fact my boss just changed my schedule. I will not be able to make the cleanup in 36a for the first time in 3 years. Don't get me wrong I have a real good job. It is the fact that my schedule can change very quickly. I have taken vacation for my deer and elk hunts, but scouting and other things..... who has enough vacation for those? Oh well pity party over. Next weeks other things will be move to allow for the scounting and cleanup. I have a couple of places mapped out to clean up. I just won't have anyone around to help cleanup. Any volunteers?? Lee

    Hunters Who Care

Looks like my schedule will let me be there. It's a great time and you can get a little scouting in. Also you might be able to get to know some of the other hunters that hunt in these units. Hope to see you there. Lee

    gates

I was born in west Texas and spent a lot of time with my Grandfather on his ranch. I learned very early that you leave a gate as you found it. That being said, the days we live in and hunting most of my time in 36a the smugglers leave gates that should be shut open, if they take the time to open them at all. If you have been down there you know most of the gates down there get destroyed by smugglers driving at night with their lights off. Or they just drive through them and do not slow down to close the gates. I have spoken to the ranch foreman and know which gates he wants me to shut if they are open when I come across them. Also they will tie a gate open if they want it to stay open. Just like has been said before. Leave a gate as you find it unless you have spoken to the rancher and know different. It really boils down to us, as hunters showing we care about this issue to make sure we do the right thing. Lee

    Doves?

I've gone out to a tank in 36a for the last three days. First day by myself, the last two days with another hunter. We limited out each day. First day by 9am, the second day by 8:30, and today by 10. If anyone is going out that way sent me a pm. I can tell you a few places to try. Lee
  22. Well last night on the way back to my hotel from dinner I saw 5 big whitetail bucks right there on the local college campus. But I'm in Maryland right now. Sorry couldn't help myself. I'm stuck out here until next weekend. Teaching a class. When I get home I'll be out in 36a for the week. If anybody is out there I'll be in a Silver Z71 and a green cabelas tent. Stop and have a beer. Lee

    GPS?

I use an Etrex legend. I've had it for 2 years and it works great. Mostly for getting coordinates to tell the border patrol where to look for illegals when I'm in 36a. It will work well for me in 4b this Nov for elk. If you are in the Tucson area Tucson Map and Flag is a great place to buy your GPS. They have a guy there who will show you all about how to use it.
