gnoto, look forward to meeting you. I think I'll be some where close to the Black Hills. I will be setting up camp on the 1st or 2nd. Then I'll come back in and post where I'm at. Anyone is welcome to stop by. Well, someone associated with USO might have a few things to answer for.... but anyone else is welcome. Lee

I've got a mulie tag for Nov in 36a. I'll be in there from Nov 1st on. I think I'll be camped in the flats close to the Black hills. I drive a silver Chevy Z-71. Stop by if you see me. I will have a few cold beers on hand. Lee

I'll be out in 36a doing some scouting and quail hunting this weekend. I drive a Silver Chevy Z-71. Stop and talk if you are in the area. Lee

Well I got back from scouting in 36a. There is a lot of Carp running around the flats. I had to laugh at finding some pink tape marking part of a trail. It looked as if the guy was marking the start of a trail that a good sized buck made. Large tracks and a nice size pile of droppings. The reason I laugh is there were probably at least 9 different trails running though the same area. I have walked this area a lot in the last 4 years and have found some good size sheds. My brother took a nice 4x4 out of there 2 years ago. It is just a good area. I hope this fool comes back and removes the tape after the season. However, I think it will be me removing the tape after the season. Oh, what started this thread, my rifle is still a little sticky but is getting better. Cleaning the rifle again tonight. Lee Peck

I was out Saturday trying to sight in my 30.06. The bolt is now stuck. I would like to fix it myself, but I think it would probably br wiser to take it to someone. Does anyone know of a good gunsmith in Tucson? Thanks in advance Lee
-
Hey thanks for all the info. Bill after your post I went to that site and found out about cases sticking. I played around with it and freed up the bolt. It seems to be working ok now. I am going out to scout today. I will be staying out over night in 36a. I hope to sight the rifle in and make sure it works in the field. My hunt is for CARP in November. After the season I will go to Murphy's and see if they can tell me more about the rifle. Lee

Keith, I have to admit I don't know. I got it from my brother in law. It was his dad's gun. He told me he thought it was military issue. It has a number stamped on the side and 30.06 stamped on the barrel. It also has a scope. But that is all I know. Except when I shoot it I hit what I aim at. Lee

Hey Thanks, I will call them tomorrow. Lee

I just started using a site called GoogleEarth.com It is really good for scouting roads. The satelite pictures are anywhere from 1 to 3 years old. A lot of the roads in 36A are not on the topo maps. But with this I can see not only looking straight down, I can also tilt the page and see terrain changes. Check it out.

AZ Hunters Who Care Trash Pickup Day
peckl1 replied to AZLance's topic in Coues Deer Hunting in Arizona
As of today I will be off. Therefore, I'll be there. It's a little bit of work for a good cause. If you have the time it's a good way to spend it. Lee -
I have a rifle bull hunt in 4b on the 19th. I had a guy lined up who is a friend of the family to go with my brother and I. He has been hunting elk for a lot of years. I just found out he might not be able to make it. He sent me earlier this year to scout around wagon draw. I saw some good sign and a few cows. I'll be going back up on Thursday for an overnight scout trip. all I can get done before the hunt due to work. I would like to ask if anyone knows this unit. Any info would be appreciated. I spend most of my time close to home in 36a. If anyone needs info on that unit just let me know. Thanks Lee

Buy the tag!!! There is nothing as bad as to see a lion and not have a tag. Last Javalina season my nephew asked me why he needed to spend the money on a lion tag. Well on our third day we called in 2 lions and he shot a tom that wieghed in at 105 after being field dressed. So I say again buy the Tag. Lee

Amanda, I am in missouri tonight for work. I can't see the moon tonight. A lot of people don't realize how good we have it in Arizona and I sure don't brag about it while I'm on the road. I can't wait to get home so I can go out scouting. I will be in 4b. I got drawn for the Nov elk hunt. Lee

quail huntin(wt scouting)
peckl1 replied to m1280's topic in Miscellaneous Items related to Coues Deer
I was out yesterday, as treestandman1 would say, getting in touch with my femine side (quail hunting). I got 6 gambels and 6 scaled. And of all things got to thinking about politics. I read the other day in an outdoor magazine a quote from John Kerry. It had to do with what he called deer hunting. He said "I go out with my trusty 12 guage double barrel, crawl around on my stomach. I track and move and decoy and play games and try to out smart them. You know kind of play the wind. That's hunting." Well I got to thinking about this quote. He wasn't talking about hunting he got confussed. He was talking about politics. "I go out with my trusty double barrel mouth so I can talk out of both sides of it. I crawl around on my stomach like the snake that I am. I track and move and decoy around all the issues so no one knows what I just said. You know play the wind and answer the questions based on which way the wind is blowing today. Now that is politics." Just my 2 cents Lee -
Hunters Who Care Trash Cleanup
peckl1 replied to sea cowboy's topic in Coues Deer Hunting in Arizona
I'll be there on the 23rd. We will be cleaning in 36A, 36b, and 36c if it is like the clean up in March. So scouting in 36a is a posibility while cleaning up. It should be a good time. I was in there today doing a little quail hunting. Shot 4 and boy was the wind scewing things up. Also there were a bunch of guys camped out at the corral at Bontimonte ranch. I quess they could not read the sign on the corral about not camping within 1/4 mile of water holes. If I hadn't been by myself I think I would have asked them about that. Lee -
Just past the last pond at the end of the road. If you look up to the left the shrine is a little concrete dome with some arrows and shell casing, and several candles. It is close to the end of the road. I have not been back there very much lately. Most of my time has been spent down by west coast tank. I'll be out that way next month to do some quail hunting.
-
Trufletch, It sounds like you have been all over the same areas that I've been. Have you seen that hunters shrine at the end of the road passed that water hole? Also the north end of the Cerro Colorados have a lot of lion sign. I had the Oct hunt up there last year. All I saw was a small fork horn coues. I didn't take the shot. Next month I'll be out there for some quail hunting. Stop by my camp. Lee
-
gnoto, I've spent a lot of time in the area also. Pretty much all over the area. I'll be out there next month. If you see a silver chevy z71 it's me. Stop by my camp and say hi. and as always there is usually a cold beer or 2 around. Lee

We were in Penitas wash just north of the hills. we had to carry him out about 1/2 mile to the truck. My nephew was very excited about the whole thing and I could hardly keep up with him. Lee

Last Javalina season my nephew and I called in 2 mountain lions using the j-13 call. He killed a tom that weighed 105lbs field dressed. it was the biggest thing he has killed so far. Just birds until then. He is 17 and hooked. He bought a bow and has been working very hard at being good with it.

I just got back from 4B today. I walked through Wagon Draw and all the adjacent ridges. Boy, I need to do more walking. I spotted several small pine trees that had just been mauled. Alot of droppings and large tracks. There is a big bull in there some where. Just hope he is still around in November.

I drew a blank for Deer here in Arizona this year. However, My brother and I got drawn for Bull elk in 4B. We have a friend who knows a little about the unit. I will be going up there on Thursday to start scouting. So I thought I would ask the group if any of you would be willing to give out a little info on where to start? Any help would be greatly appreiciated. Thanks Lee

Is it just me or does this Buster guy sound a lot like CHD? Remember he was the rich guy from Colorado that did nothing but brag about his money and try to stir the pot. Just a thought. I wish I could be in Phoenix today. For those of you who can be there you have my thanks. Lee

they just posted on the g&f web site that they are asking the court to continue with the current draw system. please check back later for more info. Ok what does that mean??? Lee
-
What we need to do is let the PETA people know that while we are waiting to get the draw results all we have to do is come up with a way to hunt an endangered frog. Boy... I'll bet they will get after the game and fish and the results of the draw will be out ASAP.. Lee
