  1. />Are you guys sure the reason for seeing little deer is "the elk are taking over". From my perspective the last 20 years "the predators have taken over".......and I'm referring to both deer and elk herd declines!

I think it is a combination of these two things along with the forests being too thick. I always see more deer in woods that have been thinned with more understory

  2. Well it took me 6 days of hunting and a lot of debating with myself whether I should shave or not but I finally got the job done on Saturday night.

I was sitting a blind that I had drew on a nice buck the night before but never got a shot at while my brother was sitting a ridge he could glass from. He called and told be he had three bucks down below him so I packed my gear up and ran up the hill. By the time I got there they were bedded down across a ravine only 120 yards away. I left my pack with him and began the stalk. About an hour later I was 45 yards from him while he was in his bed. I was hiding behind a rock but the angle was bad and I had some brush between me and him so i decided to back out and re-position myself. Another half hour later I was 40 yards away but I still needed to get up another 10 yards to get a shot. The bucks got up and began to feed around so I picked up the pace to cover the last 10 yards. I watched them feed around for 5 minutes until this guy finally gave me a 40 yard shot. He was quartering to me so I hit him just in front of the lead shoulder blade and the broadhead hit the opposite humorous and stopped. He went 60 yards and piled up and had a massive blood trail. This was my first time using shwackers and i'm pretty impressed. My entry hole was 3.5 inches long.

We cut and wrapped him on Sunday morning and he is now frozen in my freezer ready to make lots of burritos!

  3. Im sitting here in my blind with lots of time to think about thinks. One thought that ran through my head was "I need to shave tonight before my girlfriend gets back from her work trip." Then the next thought that ran through my mind was maybe my face stands out less with my beard and I am more camouflaged.

I have now put some serious thought into this and was wondering what everyone else's opinion on this was?

....and now it is starting to rain on me so maybe my beard will help shed some water and keep my face warmer...

  4. I would come up with a different plan. If it rains enough to fill those tanks there will be water everywhere and the elk won't be coming to water. Just my opinion. I would follow bugles or scout out areas they are moving through. Good luck

  5. Here is what I do.

    Ingredients:

    Ground deer/elk

    I can El Pato salsa

    One onion

    salt

    pepper

    garlic powder

Add the meat to a saucepan. Add salt, pepper and garlic powder to taste. In a seperate pan saute the onion. Let the meat cook throughly. Add the onion and can of El Pato to the meat and simmer until the liquid in the salsa reduces. Then put on a tortilla with your favorite fixins

  7. I was dove hunting down by Tucson about 4 years ago. I saw a dove flying on a beeline right for me. As it got close I drew my gun and swung on it. It saw me do this and decided to make some evasive maneuvers only to fly right into a power line and decapitate itself. I bagged it without even firing a shot

  8. +1,000,000 on Casey's!!! If you are not going to do it yourself, you should definitely go with Casey's. Before I did it myself, I had Casey's and a number of others process my game, but Casey's was always FAR better!!!!!!!!!!

What he said. Have been going to Casey's for over 10 years they have always been great.

  9. Interesting. I'm glad a compromise was reached. I feel the price for a "hunter assist permit" is a little steep. Sucks for the people who live to hunt with their families. Other than that i think the rules are fair and reflect what hunting used to be back when.
