That is not the first time I have heard that this year. The rut has been just weird this year here in Arizona and even in some spots in mexico. I have spent 6 days since January hunting a certain monster buck and I have only seen 1 small buck that was even with does .

Thats a very nice buck. alot of people have never killed a buck that big with a rifle but to kill it with a bow thats not easy at all, Congrats -

Kevin let me know if you want me to stick a arrow in him this weekend for you and I can get the correct score over to you Thats if I dont stick that toad I have been chasing -
thanks, It was actually shot down in sonora mexico. I shot it the second to last day of the hunt ( 5 days) I was passing on 5-10 decent bucks a day and saw 1 that was in the 115-120" class but was never able to get him killed after spending 2.5 days looking for him again. This buck my dad and I spotted down at a water hole drinking. We looked at him for a few minutes before spooking him. As he started running up the hill my dad told me to shoot him I hesitated for a second because I was looking for a bigger buck. I looked at him threw my 10x42 leicas with the built in range finder 1 more time to range him running ( 285 yards) and drilled him with the 270 right threw the front shoulder. My dad told me its all about mass and charactor on this buck. He scored only 86 7/8 with some broken off points but he will always make a good memory on a fun hunt with my dad.

He is not a real high scoring buck but he had some charactor to him. He would have scored in the low 90's if he was not broke off in a few spots but Iam happy with him. Thaught I would share him

Nice mounts and I would like to know more about those bass also -
I know alot of people that hunt mexico and they have all killed bucks this year exept for a few that hold out for bucks that are 110+ or bigger. I know of a few bucks that were over 130" killed to. I would have to agree with coues hunters post above. this out fitter must be on a hunted out ranch or his clients are holding out for a record book class buck. I will be heading down the day after x-mas and I hope to have a story and some pics to share.

As a kid growing up we used to pack in the Whet Stones (34b) to hunt Coues deer every December when you could draw a rut hunt every year. I have not been there in probaly 15 years, but was curious if any one on this board hunts them ? How is the deer heard doing there lately ?

I will be heading out the day after christmas to look for a big buck. Hope to have a story and some pics around the 3,4 of January to post.

I would be interested in something like this. Lets make it interesting and have some 500-700 yard sessions on paper ?
-
They might have been referring to adjusting your muzzle break to decrease or tune barrel whip ?
-
I have a muzzle break on my 300 win. mag. I like it because when your shooting a buck it helps keep the buck in the scope after you pull the trigger. It help keeps the barrel from jumping up from the recoil. Most guides do not like muzzle breaks either because of the noise .

I have to admitt just the idea of killing a coues in a petting zoo is pretty lame. I just don't understand why any one would shoot one in a cage and have courage to hang it on the wall for a trophy. A trophy coues deer on your wall should be earned the hard way and not earned by sitting in a lawn chair waiting for the deer feeders to come on so you can shoot it.

The Az Game and Fish Dept. has proposed eliminating half of all the september archery bull permits in each area and moving them to a later hunt structure that would start the 47th week of the year ( nov 24th in 2006). The september hunts would be shortened from 14 days to 10 days and the late hunts would be for 14 days unless the season would overlap with a general (rifle) elk hunt. If this happens the late archery season will run for 7 days in areas that have conflicting general hunts. The november archery hunts would be for any elk. They would offer about a 2 to 1 ratio of the permits that were taken from the september season for the late season , because the success rate would be much lower. For instance : in 2005 there were 100 permits available for the september archery bull elk hunt in unit 9 . in 2006 there would be 50 permits available for the september season and 100 permits available for the november any elk season. If you dont like this proppsal you better get involved. There is a survey set up to get information about what arizona archery elk hunters want. It's very important that you take the survey! The survey can be taken on the internet @: www.archeryelksurvey.com There will be several game and fish public input meetings. Its very important that you attend as many of these meetings as possible and voice your opinion to the Game and Fish Department. I will post the dates and locations for the meetings a little later.

I have always used my old 25-06 for shooting whitetail and Iam looking to buy a new rifle. What is the Ideal caliber for shooting coues at long ranges ? .270 or a 300 shortmag ? I have killed a few over 400-500 yards with my 25-06 but want to get more dialed in and have a better shot pattern.

Thanks for all the helpful information guys. I have decided to go with a 270 and go with the 4x14 power leupold scope and get the dot system. My only issue now is I want a 24" to 26 " barrell thats stainless steel on a black composite stock. i would really want a Remington but having problems finding it. My second choice would be a winchester. probaly will float the barrel and glass the action on it along with a trigger job. Also what the thaught on putting a muzzle break on a 270 ?

I was told today that if i go with the 300 ultra that it does not really flatten out intell200-300 yards. Is this true ?
