    First Elk

Az Yota- congrats- Cow or Bull either way they both rock! I killed my bull in 04' and my cow in 05' both with archery equipment I had the cow made into a shoulder mount. It was the only one in the taxidermy shop that I saw. I didn't care, I hunted cows for years before I harvested her. I am equally proud of the cow as I am my P&Y bull. Everything I learned about hunting cows has been applied to bull elk hunting. It's made me a better elk hunter- period. Enjoy that meat! AzP&Y

    Kaibab Grouse

Ran into my first Grouse in Az on the spring turkey hunt in 27. Scared the B- Jeezus out of me when it fluttered out of a spruce pine! Have to put that hunt on the radar. Looks like the leaves are definetely changing on some of the trees. I saw it was 37 degrees @ the Grand Canyon this morning. AzP&Y

    Trail cam methods!

My advice would be look towards some of Arizona's Wilderness areas. Prior to a trip in there, study some maps and pick 3 prospective areas within a mile (once you arrive at your primary spot looking at maps). Strap on a pack and head in there overnight. I'm talking MILES not yards. Wake up early and check out your 3 potential areas (sign,trails- possibly a spring or 2). Be secretive , yet selective of where you mount the camera. Secure it with the method of your choice - knowing anything can be removed with the right tools. If you have the set up, install a solar panel or 12v battery. Leave the area alone for 2-3 months, while using any one of the commercial bait attractants on the market. Upon arrival to check the camera (this is the Christmas morning part)- bring a viewer or camera to view the SD card. This second visit will give you some concrete data. Do I continue to work this spot? or venture to another? or is my camera gone and I know this is a thieving area? Wilderness eliminates- all mechanized (including mountain bikes) and motorized vehicles. Foot and horse is about all you will find. At the very least, you will be in better physical shape when you whack that buck, bear or bull having covered some ground and learned some new country. Good luck & don't get discouraged, it can take time for the spot to develop and turn on! - The bug bites deep! AzP&Y

    Nocturnal Buck

That's what always perplexes me with great summer velvet bucks. That happened to me last season also. You've got this buck coming into an area and then WHAM- they turn to the night. With little to no pressure and very little change in climate. Hope it turns out well for you! AzP&Y

+1 - I pulled this one off with her last summer and I've been good to go for a while. You guys need to raise the bar with your ladies, it can go a L-O-N-G way! Make sure it's "her" choice and not yours. AzP&Y

    Rain this weekend

August 21, 2009- 1205 pm NEXT 24 TO 48 HOURS AS THE FLOW ALOFT SHIFTS TO A SOUTHERLY DIRECTION. SEVERAL UPPER LEVEL DISTURBANCES WILL BE INTERACTING WITH THIS MOISTURE AND CAUSE PERIODS OF SHOWERS AND THUNDERSTORMS OVER THE WEEKEND. SOME OF THE STORMS COULD BE SEVERE THIS EVENING...AND COULD ALSO PRODUCE LOCALLY VERY HEAVY RAINFALL. EARLY NEXT WEEK...THE FLOW ALOFT WILL TURN TO A MORE SOUTHWEST DIRECTION...RESULTING IN A MARKED DECREASE IN THUNDERSTORM ACTIVITY. TEMPERATURES THIS WEEKEND WILL BE MUCH COOLER...WITH A WARMING TREND EXPECTED NEXT WEEK. AzP&Y
