Shortpants and COOSEFAN's adventure
AZP&Y replied to COOSEFAN's topic in Coues Deer Hunting in Arizona
right on Jim- Alaska, now this- sweet !!!! As far as backpacking, there are 2 schools of thought, Trial and error and actually breaking down every piece of equipment and weighing it. Then you go back to the drawing board and figure what, works, what didn't and what you may need for the next outing. I've logged over 100miles with the backpack this year and am constantly evaluating my gear. There are so many options that it's mind boggling. Titanium pots and pans, butane stoves, ultralight bivy sacks etc. I understand the claustrophobia in the KELTY shelter, especially if you're used to a big tent. But I commend you on sticking with it and dropping a Fantastic COUES! AzP&Y Doug -
2006 Kodiak Alaska Trip
AZP&Y replied to Red Rabbit's topic in Miscellaneous Items related to Coues Deer
RR, Outstanding pics and recap. I miss Kodiak, it's the 2nd largest US island and boy is it incredibly beautiful. Those darn alder thickets are incredibly dampening on your movement. They are tough as nails and make for a tough climb. Glad that you got a SITKA! My buddy up there has said that the population is not what it should be , but maybe it will rebound in the coming years? HEY- HOW ABOUT THAT AIRPORT IN KODIAK- THE MOUNTAIN AT THE END OF THE RUNWAY Thank you for shaing the experience and pictures! AzP&Y Doug Here's one of my better pictures from Kodiak... -
Brian, Appreciate the update, I was wondering how things went. You've had an outstanding attitude and did some quality scouting trips. It's great that you got to spend some quality time with your son and I'm pulling for you on the youth hunt!!! Knock one down! Doug AzP&Y

Muskrat, Yes, I have seen this more than once. In fact the times i've caught them together are at watering locations. Usually it's been about 8 muley does and 1 coues hanging out.. Nice time spent in the desert & some father/daughter time. AzP&Y

uhhhh ... I think I'll stick with the paper process. After last year, I'll take some proof in them handling the online draw online for a year or so before I consider doing it online again. Haven't heard of any big changes like messing with the Archery Elk season. At least there will be much greater 'lead" time in preparing for a hunt with draw results out April... AzP*Y Doug

BMF1321, It's funny that you say that. I took a buddy of mine hunting down there for his first trip to the refuge in January 2006. He was working down a wash and found 8 gallon jugs , each 3/4 full of water. These were 'newer' jugs (not the ones spray painted black to avoid detection ) and had been left there very recently for someone to easily find them, while they await for there ride to the next pickup point. So I see him coming towards me with this hugh smile. I ask , well did you get a shot? His reply was 'no', but I put my KNIFE through 8 jugs of water, and his reply , "just doing my part to fight terrorism". It will be interesting to see how long the refuge stays closed with 3 rifle seasons approaching , followed by a 45 day archery season extending into 2007. AzP&Y

A couple of chairs- 1 - Camo Swivel Stool - 360 degree swivel seat. weighs just 2.5lbs and 2- Thermarest camo seat 11x15 and weighs 4oz. 1.5 inches thick. Same company that makes the entire line of thermarest products. AzP&Y Duwane Adams uses a foam pad from walmart that retails at about 9.95. , he prefers the ground level when that opportunity is available.

Here is the official statement posted on the AZ game and fish website: http://www.azgfd.gov/pdfs/h_f/huntingunits...AreaClosure.pdf Buenos Aires National Wildlife Refuge The U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service has determined that the portion of the Buenos Aires National Wildlife Refuge south of the Garcia Road will be closed to public use under authority found in 8 RM 13.5 and 50 CFR 25.21(e) as of October 3, 2006. Garcia Road runs east/west parallel to the international boundary about one mile north of the line. This area is about 3500 acres in size. It has been determined that this portion of the Refuge poses a threat to public safety. The situation in this zone has reached a point where continued public use of the area is not prudent. The Buenos Aires National Wildlife Refuge has been adversely affected by border-related activities. The international border with Mexico has also become increasingly violent. Assaults on law enforcement officers and violence against migrants have escalated. Violence on the Refuge associated with smugglers and border bandits has been welldocumented. Many of these activities are concentrated at, or near, the border. The concentration of illegal activity, surveillance and law enforcement interdictions make these zones dangerous Emergency closures normally remain in effect for 30 days or less. However, the activities that have built up to this decision point are not likely to diminish in less than 30 days. We anticipate that this closure will remain in effect for a much longer period.

Bob, Not sure if you've consider this or not? But go and get your concealed weapons permit. I'm not trying to circumvent the law by telling you that, but more of an option in certain situations. You want to carry a weapon in camp and in my years of hunting down there I've never had a problem with that aspect of hunting/camping on the refuge. It's pretty much as they have stated and what they have/will enforce. I hope the refuge returns to it's earlier years and the quality of what a refuge should be. It's a nice place camp and as some forgotten is not a landfill. Good luck and your hunt! Doug AzP&Y

This is exactly what Mr. Duwane adams said in his 1/2 day glassing lessons. If you apply this concept to the landscape, simply put you will see more deer. Mirroring what RR says, " When the sun forces me to glass to the north and west, I tend to follow the shade line down as the sun rises, Try to be in position at dusk as deer move from the north bedding zones towards the feeding areas - I was reading this and was impressed by the thread as well. My question is that I have the December hunt and will the colder mornings 20's and 30's temps delay their morning routine until their is sufficient warmth ? or will they move anyway at first light? Incredible!!!! Glad to see some truely young hunter involved at the deepest level. How are they at glassing? It's in the genes! That's cool that they are willing to sit hour after hour waiting, watching and looking for Arizona's Big Game animals. Success can lead to great patience. Appreciate you sharing the pictures. Holy Frejole! How much for the rack? azp&Y -
Great pictures and nice video. I see a deer in the middle of the picture ,bedded down in the shade? - It's probably because I took Duwane Adams -course on "glassing coues" Did have a question, are you camping in that Arivaca RV park during your hunt? I have the December tag so I'm trying to figure out where to stay/camp with the least amount of hassle and problems with my things disappearing. Thanks for sharing the pictures- I'm going down there to scout after the 1000 folks get through with the October fun. Doug AzP&Y
