What is the Ideal Arrow and Broadhead Choice for Elk?
mulie hunter posted a topic in Bowhunting for Coues Deer
It's My first Time hunting Elk, I'm wondering what you seasoned Elk hunters would consider to be a good Arrow and Broadhead to use for Elk? I'm thinking of using Carbon Express CX 400 Arrows And thinking about using a G5 Montec 100 grain Broadhead. I'm open to all suggestions. -

300ultramag, I guess reading my first post you could get that impression. Anyway I purchased a PSE Bow Madness not to long ago, I'm getting it dialed in, and in the off season I've always loved to try out new "set-up's". It keeps me out practicing and by the time Bow season starts, I'm usually confident I got the right gear to do the job. -

Regardless what you do... you better do it quick! If your just now thinking about a specific arrow and broadhead set up, your already behind the 8 ball.. Its all about confidence.... I suggest buying 2 different brands of arrows that are similar in spine, weight , length. sight them in and once youve found the arrow that fits you best then practice shooting fixed blade broadheads. ie. 4 blade muzzys are BAD TO THE BONE! (Oh yeah buy a dozen of the better of the 2 aroows previously mentioned) I would suggest Easton FMJs And Gold Tip XT hunter I don't think I'm behind the 8 ball, I've been Bowhunting for years, I've never been drawn for Elk though. As For Arrows I Have Carbon Express CX 400 29" 8.9 grains, Easton Carbon Excel 29" 9.5 grains, Beman Black Max MFX Arrows 29" 9.5 grains. I have Shuttle T-Lock broadheads 100 grain and just ordered the G5 Montec 100 grain, Also have the Rage 2 blade 100 grain, Rocket Steel heads, but reading the other post I think I will stick with a fixed blade for Elk. I Truly appreciate all the advice just wanted to see what has worked for others on Elk , since the biggest game I've hunted so far is deer. -

Let me know how you like the new Sight, I have the 5 pin Orion, And thinking of going with a different one. -
As previously posted I drew a 7 west tag for sept. archery. I went up this past monday to get an idea of the unit. Looks like great country with plenty of water holes. Spent the day saw elk sign but no elk(Saw turkey and deer). We were around Kendrick peak. Are they still on thier winter ground? Yes I am a Elk rookie.I am wondering when is a good time to start scouting the unit to get an idea of there movement.

Need Your Honest Opinions
mulie hunter replied to SouthernCouesHunter's topic in Bowhunting for Coues Deer
Well if that's the case then PSE is the Prom Queen and Matthews is the ugly step-sister. Buy Pse!!!! -
I hunted 12a last year and talked to a guy hunting 12b at Jacob lake through out the hunt. He said it was a tough hunt he was seeing mostly coyotes and very few deer, needless to say he went home empty handed. So the success rates are probably pretty accurate.

Nice finds. Love that mulie head.

I have shot PSE bows for the last 5 years, and would shoot nothing else. The service I have recieved at the PSE pro shop has always been excellent. I have not shot the new Madness bow, but have heard good things about it. I'm heading down to PSE next week to shoot one, if it's as good as advertised, I'll be coming home with one. You can't go wrong with PSE. -
WoW!!!! I'm in mulie heaven right now!!!!

mulie hunter replied to mulie hunter's topic in Bowhunting for Coues Deer
Coosefan, thanks for the advice. I'm going up every month until the season starts, So these next couple of months I will focus on learning the country. When the hunt starts, I plan on staying for the entire season if that's what it takes. hoghntr, I will check those area's out on my scouting trips. I appreciate the help. -
Well I finally Got drawn for bull elk. 7 west Sept. Archery. I'm excited and pumped about this!!! It's my first ever Bull tag!!! Any advice on hunting elk during the rut would be greatly appreciated. Should I look for a good water hole, try calling, maybe a little of both??? Thanks in advance for your help.
