Well, This Mule deer hunter got his 1st Coues deer. I got him Friday Afternoon. Well I'm not a story teller, but I'll give it a try. We got a late start Friday, didn't get to the unit until about 11am, on the way in to set up camp, we come to a fork in the road were not sure which way to go, so I tell my buddy(AZRHD, ) lets take the right fork, we go about a 1/4 of a mile and it dead ends, as I'm making a u-turn and upset about taking a wrong turn, I noticed a buck on the side of the hill about 300 hundred yards away , he goes down into a canyon. I decided to go after him, When I get to the top of the ridge where he went down, I can't find him but I notice a ridge about a 1/4 of a mile away, and decide to go take a look. I get to the top of the ridge. I see a deer running up the side of the canyon but don't see no headgear, but then a buck runs up the canyon, I decide to take a shot, lucky for me there's a barbed wire fence to rest on, one shot with my daughters .243 at 155 yards and he's down. When I left the truck, I couldn't get to my 30-06 buried in all the gear, so I had grabbed the .243 which was supposed to be my back up rifle. My first coues deer. 3 of us took turns carrying him on our shoulders out of the canyon, thats cool can't do that with a mule deer. Never knew when everything seemed to be going wrong it could turn out so right. I got to meet Jim Heffilinger( hopefully I spelled it right). I met him when I checked my deer in at the check station at 3 points, it was the first buck checked in on friday, he aged it at 3&1/2 years old. 3wtdeer.bmpwtdeer.bmp2wtdeer.bmp

You can go ahead and say what you want, but all we have to say is SCOREBOARD, we can lose the rest of our games and we are still in a bowl and one of the top teams in the pac-10. Our wins and losses if we have any mean something and can be talked about, but if you feel that UofA is being left out we can include them in the discussion, who is going to be coaching them next year, are they going to finish 8th, 9th or 10th in the pac-10, when if ever will they get to the Rose Bowl, or as usual we can just wait till basketball season and listen then. I know you folks to the north have a lot to be proud of, but I sure hope ASU finishes the Pac-10 the way they started...seeing how they have the top 3 teams remaining on the schedule. I wouldn't be suprised to see ASU drop 3 in row...and then when UA beats them in Dec they'll end up finishing 5-4...right in the middle of the pack. Stoops probably needs a miracle to save his job, but beating ASU up there would be a good start. It hasn't been a great 5 years (1-4), but over the last 25 seasons UA's record against ASU is 15-9-1. Good luck for now, and hold on to being "one of the top teams in the pac-10" as long as you can. We'll soon see if they were able to finish it out. And yes, Basketball season started last night - pretty full house at Mckale Center for the Red-Blue Game. P.S. Go Ducks. All you U of A Kittykat lovers can just dream about one day being as good as ASU!!!!

Thanks everyone, it's was a short but sweet hunt, I'm actually starting to enjoy hunting coues deer. AzP&Y, We hunted them hard in 35a last year with no luck, so this was great. Red Rabbit, I read somewhere on here about the .243 not working that good, but it sure got the job done. Stanley, Jim was very nice and knowledgeable about deer, he even gave us directions to a butcher in Tucson.

Very nice buck younghunter.

That is a nice Kaibab buck. You gotta be proud of him! Good job!

Maybe I'm missing the point here, but there is no way archery hunters harvest more deer than rifle hunters, G&F stats don't back that up. And even if the arguement for units 22 &23 are valid, why are people crying, thats 2 units statewide that archery hunters are getting "more than thier fair share" as someone stated. What about all the units rifle hunters are getting way more than thier fair share. Sorry I still am against a archery draw!!!!!

Do what you want, there's no deer in 35a. Seriously though I prefer a quiet camp. I had a deer standing in my camp one year when I got back from a early morning hunt.

That buck on the right is sweet!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
