I headed up to Camp Navajo near Bellemont last thursday in pursuit of my first elk with a bow. I was fortunate enough to take this cow on Saturday morning at around 0610. The shot as you can see was just a tad far back but the angle she was at allowed for a liver/lung shot. The arrow did not pass all the way through which made for a less than stellar blood trail, had i not seen that the arrow was still in her after the shot and decided to slowly trail her as she moved away i probably would have had a heck of a time finding her. Anyhow, as this is my first elk with a bow i can safely state that i will probably never hunt elk with a rifle again!

I was using a 3 blade Muzzy 100gr at a distance of 58.5 yards, my only guess as to why it did not pass completely through was the distance coupled with hitting a rib on entry and a rib on exit.

I went over to Sportsmans Warehouse here in Tucson yesterday and looked at the Monarchs as well as some Minox and i am almost certain that i'll be buying the Nikon's. I can understand the argument of saving and spending $1800 on the Swaro's but in my mind i cannot justify that much money for binoculars! I greatly appreciate all of the advice that was offered as it just reaffirms that the folks who frequent this site are the cream of the crop when it comes to the Hunting community.

I am looking to purchase a pair of 10x42's but do not want to pay a hefty price, anybody have any suggestions?

Took my 2 boys and one of my oldest boys friends out hunting some 36C jackrabbits and my 6 year old was able to bag his first game animal ever! The look on his face says it all! I can tell you that by his reaction after taking the animal you'd have thought he bagged a world class buck! As a father it is times like these that make it all worth while.

Second chance to pay tag fees for any one who applied online
DotShot replied to MT. CAT's topic in Coues Deer Hunting in Arizona
Wow a bunch of cut throats in here! And for the job comment, if you make a mistake yer right they dont pat you on the back and give you a raise, but they also dont fire you and hire the next guy in line.... And since when is it ok to punish someone else for YOUR mistake? (your being G&F) I sure wish i could have written a personal check and paid my fees like all the paper applicants w4ere able to do and therein lies my point...double standard end of story. -

I am interested to know how many of the individuals who voted "No" applied online?......i would venture to guess that a majority of them did not. I also wonder how many of the "No" voters did not get drawn at all (and are looking for any excuse to add another tag to the pot of leftovers). -

With that mentality, G&F blew it with the online draw, so lets give everyone who applied a tag....c'mon be a little bit realistic. G&F messed this one up and i personally think they should have to bend over backwards to accomodate the online applicants, stupid or not. -

THen why give paper applicants a second chance cause they cant follow simple directions when it comes to filling out an application? -
Myself, son, wife, dad, brother, nephew, friend and his son all drew the Nov. 36C Whitetail tag. This makes 2 years in a row that all 8 of us have drawn this hunt first choice both years! Its a great hunt and last year we were able to fill 4 of the 8 tags.

It's a real crappy deal across the board. First they hire some fisher price outfit to run the online draw which results in a suspension 2 weeks into the process. Next they decide to not charge the credit cards used in the online application process and force the online applicants to pay by cashiers check or money order (yet paper applicants cna use personal check) and only give them 8 days to get the payment in. What about those individuals who are out of town on business or vacation for an extended period of time? I personally think its only fitting that they give the idiots who sent a personal check more time to get the appropriate payment type sent in. I mean after all isnt there a grace period for those who made mistakes on their paper applications (even though the instructions are pretty dang simple to follow) in which the G&F notifies them of the mistakes and gives them a chance to correct them? So again i personally think its fair..... -

I am partial to the 300WSM, the ballistics are unbelievable, recoil isnt too bad even without a muzzle brake (my 13 year old shoots mine), my only gripe is ammo price. I shoot the 165gr Barnes (which are hard to find) and they are almost $50 a box BUT, i used one shot last year at 361 yards and the animal didnt take another step. I for one am sold on this caliber...

New Video Camera
DotShot replied to azcouesandelk's topic in Photography of Coues Deer and Other Wildlife
Prior to purchasing a new video camera recently i did alot of research on the HDD cameras and did not like what i read. Most of the reviews were quite negative on video quality produced by these new cameras which lead me to purchase a Mini-DV tape camcorder instead. I am really interested in seeing some of the videos you take to see if there was any validity to the reviews. Also with the zoom that you have make sure you have a tripod and hopefully the camera has some good video stabilization casue it will get awful jittery without! Good luck and may you get some awesome footage from your upcomming hunts! -
Draw Results Available Online

For those who had to send in their payments because of the online app issue, were the envelopes sent by the G&F postage prepaid? -
Draw Results Available Online

Myself, the wife, son, dad, brother, nephew, and a friend of mine and his son all drew 36C Nov whitetail hunts, all first choice....YESSSSSSSSS! Congrats to all who drew tags. -
My bad, I assumed he was referring to Camp Navajo and not the Navajo Res.......

I have hunted Elk at Camp Navajo exclusively for the last 6 years, and work with another guy who has hunted it for well over 10. The elk herd is quite substantial and there are alot of good bulls running around the depot. Unfortunately unless you have a valid security clearance you cannot hunt some of the better areas but do not let that discourage you as there are plenty of areas still available to hunt. Which hunt do you have? I will be hunting up there from teh 14th of Sept thru the 23rd of Sept as will the otehr guy I mentioned. If you would like a map and some insider info send me a PM and i will be happy to help you out. Congrats on the tag!!
-
I'm interested in the Glock, PM the info and the price when you settle on one...Thanks!

THis is an interesting dilema, as the Game & FIsh sent notices to all individuals on the application not just the person whose credit card was used, this tells me that each applicant is on their own, they pay they get a tag, they dont they forfeit their tag (individual basis not group). It is not my fault nor is it the fault of any online applicant that they hired a fisher price web outfit to do their business. ANy way you speculate it ther is going to be a major mess come late July........

Any Pictures?

I did in fact draw an archery elk tag (Camp Navajo), and no i do not hunt up north fo archery deer as i am quite content with my fav area (36C) hence the reason my statement was more of an inquiry so i could get responses from those people who do hunt up in that area during those times.
-
Call me crazy, but do you honestly think there are so many archery deer hunters out in the field that they are going to seriously impact those elk hunters whose hunt they will overlap?
-
Well 1 out of 2 aint bad, I got drawn for 6B (Camp Navajo) Archery early cow (5th tag in 6 years) and my son did not get drawn for elk so he is pretty bummed. At least he can tag along and help his dad out. Congrats to all who were drawn now lets fill the tags and have a shortage on tag soup this year!@#$%^&

Draw results are getting closer.
DotShot replied to Huntn coues's topic in Coues Deer Hunting in Arizona
TO be honest, the only reason I am not getting worked up about the credit card hits is the fact that they took my money right off the bat (paper App) so i am at the mercy of them releasing the official results
