    New fire

We got to talk to my Boy tonight and they are fighting a brand new fire (3 starts) on a mountain called Pillar Peak(??) in Cochise Co. I have no idea where that is but if anyone can tell me where that is, I'd apreciate it. They believe it to be started by Illegals and they are not allowed to fight it at night or sleep out to do safty issues...meaning all the drug runners. I guess the fire is in a Miserable place and they may get a chopper ride in tomorrow to save them the long and brutal hike in there to the top.... I'd apreciate any info you all might have down that way..... Thanks, CnS

    New fire

Aaah, now we're getting somewhere. That does make perfect sense; baffle of 'em with brilliance. Instead of trying to smuggle drugs through the most monitored and patrolled area of the country, just create a farm on top of a mountain in the same area and double the chances of detection. After all since we can't find it on a map, it sure as heck won't be found by the border patrol or narcs. -TONY Um... I'm sorry if you misunderstood.... the fires are burning Up the mountain.... they were started in some side canyon(s).... probably toward the bottom, I'd guess. I must have the name wrong... I'm guessing it is one of the mountains that TLH mentioned. TLH, Buckhorn and I were talking about that this morning... it gets in their blood. My boy has wanted to fight wildland fires since he was 6 years old... now on his second year with this awesome Crew... he could be classified as a Hardcore Fire Junky. The boy loves cutting trees and putting out fires.....he lives, eats and sleeps it and unless he is Hunting or Chasin' those Girl Critters... it is what he thinks about most. CnS Two new fires started in Cochise County yesterday. The one your boy is on is probably by Miller Peak, which is in the Huachuca Mtns right on the border. It is very rough, rugged country and I believe that they were shipped in by heliciopter this morning. Good news is I think that they have a pretty good handle on it. He will be diggin' that chopper ride vs. pounding the ground in there! Thanks! CnS

Thanks...... He said that the mountain is like the Rim x3 or x4! I have seen him run up the face of the Rim and down it.... He was impressed with how big that Mountain is and it must real close to the border. He is just glad to be on a fire... regardless of where it is. CnS

    Unit 33 Hunt pressure

Well the Illegals have ruined the border units.... So let AZGF ruin the rest! They can't allow 33 to continue to produce the best coues deer in the state for very long.... that would be just plain Wrong!!! We just thought Coues Deer were hard to hunt..... they just got Harder! I just wish I was as Edjumacated as the AZGF so I could understand their management plan.... are we trying to harass the deer to death or harvest and manage them..... I'm to Stupid to understand..... I guess. Boy, I sure am glad we all have more Opportunity.... aren't you guys??? CnS

    First Aid/Survival Kits

Quite honestly Daryl.... here in Az we have so little true wilderness hunting that less is more, IMO.... I stick to a couple simple things for most AZ hunts: 2 protein bars, 1 spaceblanket, 1 mini-emergency poncho, matches, a bit of rope, water and my hunting gear.....and that is too much weight as it is. I didn't even carry much more than that when hunting in the NWT... and we slept out over night 6 (GPS) miles from camp. I did have my wool sweater, gloves, beany, and Gortex rain parka and that kept me warm. But in reality I had more gear with me than both of the guys that were my "guides"... I just really think less is more... the secret is to have alittle extra and don't worry about the rest..... all that survival stuff just isn't as handy in the modern world of GPS's, radios, and cell phones. Make yourself prepared menatly for a night out on the mountain and the rest will work out fine in 99.9% of the situations you will ever get yourself into. Again, Less is More! IMO. CnS

My dad brought home 2 thirty pounders from Bartlett one day and it was super good eating. From my experience they are good fresh and not good after being frozen and then thawed. The way we cook em up is take the whole filet and cut into chunks and batter it and fry em up. It's like eating popcorn chicken, but it's fish, and it tasted awesome. Yeah, see we always found the big fish to be kinda meally and mushy.... I love catfish but just can't even bring myself to try those big fish again.... I'll turn then back to make more little'uns! 1-3 pounds are actually my favorite.... Pan size! fried in that beer batter or just corn meal. Now that is some good eatin' there! I'll have to try the bigguns' again and I'll try it the way you guys mentioned. Thanks. CnS

    Vortex Vulture binos?

Listen to DesertBull, go buy what you an afford now and go hunting. I'm willing to bet that most of these guys had many years of good times with a cheaper pair, except for maybe a few who had rich folks, but it is easy for them now to say save your money and buy the best. Yes, they are trying to help out from experience but when you ain't got that kind of money the cheaper binos will do just fine and it will let you appreciate the better ones when time comes. Good luck hunting and enjoy whatever you buy. One word of advise would be to treat your cheaper binos with great care like not laying them on the dash while drving or on the floor. Protect them from any hard knocks and they will do just fine for now. TJ Oh Yeah!!! I had a great time when I owned the Cheap Ones.... ... I just never found as many critters! Better optics will make you a better hunter, if you let them... I know that it helped me. Examples...... A custom carpenter is made better by his specialty tools..... just as a mechanic can be made better by his. I won't use cheap glass if it is free..... and you never get to sell your cheap glass for a fair price, no one wants it. I have never "lost" money when selling some of my Swaro equipment to upgrade to "the latest or greatest". And the good stuff has never let me down. Buy what you can afford if you need to buy now..... otherwise, save and play with the good stuff sooner! IMO. CnS

COOSEFAN and Gamehauler at there best!!!

Um, Chrissy..... I'm pretty sure Dirk D. was not your partner on those pics... must have been an Impostor! BTW..... That first picture you posted is more like what I would have pictured ol' Casey lookin' like as a kid.... The kid in that pic has "size" to him.... ya know chubby.... I gotta a hunch that Jimbo was a scrawny lil' kid... I mean look at his legs. Oh, and also ol' GH is definatly to old and feeble to be the "Hairy Back Dude" I always pictured Casey's Dad to look just like that... So.... maybe you just got those pics mixed up when you posted them..... I'm thinkin' you were in the wrong house and going through the wrong underwear drawers when you found them thar pictures..... you Perv! Dirk D.

Spring Snow Melt and Global Warming

Hey..... not sure if someone else posted this or not, but I just got it in an email and thought it might fuel someone's fire.... Breaking from Newsmax.com Scientist: Earth Cooling, Not Warming A San Francisco-based scientist says that current solar activity strongly indicates that the earth is on the verge of a new ice age. "Sorry to ruin the fun, but an ice age cometh," warns Phil Chapman writing in The Australian. Chapman is a geophysicist and astronautical engineer who was the first Australian to become a NASA astronaut. Story continues below . . . "The scariest photo I have seen . . . is at www.spaceweather.com, where you will find a real-time image of the sun from the Solar and Heliospheric Observatory [sOHO], located in deep space at the equilibrium point between solar and terrestrial gravity," Chapman wrote, adding ominously that "what is scary about the picture is that there is only one tiny sunspot." "This is where SOHO comes in," he explained. "The sunspot number follows a cycle of somewhat variable length, averaging 11 years. The most recent minimum was in March last year. The new cycle, No. 24, was supposed to start soon after that, with a gradual build-up in sunspot numbers." That, he writes did not happen. "The first sunspot appeared in January this year and lasted only two days. A tiny spot appeared last Monday but vanished within 24 hours. Another little spot appeared this Monday. Pray that there will be many more, and soon." Why? According to Chapman "there is a close correlation between variations in the sunspot cycle and earth's climate. The previous time a cycle was delayed like this was in the Dalton Minimum, an especially cold period that lasted several decades from 1790. Northern winters became ferocious: in particular, the rout of Napoleon's Grand Army during the retreat from Moscow in 1812 was at least partly due to the lack of sunspots." Although the rapid temperature decline in 2007 coincided with the failure of cycle No. 24 to begin on schedule is not proof of a causal connection, Chapman warns that it is cause for concern. "Disconcerting as it may be to true believers in global warming," he explains, "the average temperature on earth has remained steady or slowly declined during the past decade, despite the continued increase in the atmospheric concentration of carbon dioxide, and now the global temperature is falling precipitously. "All four agencies that track earth's temperature [the Hadley Climate Research Unit in Britain, the NASA Goddard Institute for Space Studies in New York, the Christy group at the University of Alabama, and Remote Sensing Systems Inc in California] report that it cooled by about 0.7 C in 2007." This, he says is "the fastest temperature change in the instrumental record and it puts us back where we were in 1930. If the temperature does not soon recover, we will have to conclude that global warming is over." Moreover, he says, there is also plenty of anecdotal evidence that 2007 was exceptionally cold, noting that it snowed in Baghdad for the first time in centuries, the winter in China was simply terrible and the extent of Antarctic sea ice in the austral winter was the greatest on record since James Cook discovered the place in 1770. Chapman wrote that the global warming dogma should be put aside, "at least to begin contingency planning about what to do if we are moving into another little ice age, similar to the one that lasted from 1100 to 1850." How bad could a new little ice age be? "Much worse than the previous one and much more harmful than anything warming may do. There are many more people now, and we have become dependent on a few temperate agricultural areas, especially in the U.S. and Canada." Global warming, he added, "would increase agricultural output, but global cooling will decrease it. Millions will starve if we do nothing to prepare for it [such as planning changes in agriculture to compensate], and millions more will die from cold-related diseases." And grim as that outlook is, Chapman predicts that there is also another possibility, remote but much more serious — the Greenland and Antarctic ice cores and other evidence show that for the past several million years, severe glaciation has almost always afflicted our planet and under normal conditions, most of North America and Europe are buried under about 1.5 km of ice. This bitterly frigid climate is interrupted occasionally by brief warm interglacials, typically lasting less than 10,000 years. The present interglacial period we have enjoyed throughout recorded human history, called the Holocene, began 11,000 years ago, so an ice age is overdue. And glaciation can occur quickly: The required decline in global temperature is about 12 C and it can happen in 20 years. His conclusions: "The next descent into an ice age is inevitable but may not happen for another 1,000 years. On the other hand, it must be noted that the cooling in 2007 was even faster than in typical glacial transitions. If it continued for 20 years, the temperature would be 14 C cooler in 2027." By then, he writes, "most of the advanced nations would have ceased to exist, vanishing under the ice, and the rest of the world would be faced with a catastrophe beyond imagining." "All those urging action to curb global warming need to take off the blinders and give some thought to what we should do if we are facing global cooling instead," he writes. "It will be difficult for people to face the truth when their reputations, careers, government grants or hopes for social change depend on global warming, but the fate of civilisation may be at stake."

Texas Tom and the other lil' critters

Well.... hopped a plane Monday morning.... Ol' Huntn Coues dumped me off at the airport and I was on my way..... By 4:00 pm Texas time I was sitting in a ground blind! It was not long before these ladies passed by at 35 yds.... After they left i had another hen headed my way but she came up short when shee saw the first hens a 150 yards away. This little fellow was my next visiter.... He mad his way right up to my blind I even got out and messed with him a bit. That Jackie Bushman, feller is a goofball.... I could have caught this sucker with my bare hands!! These guys are by far my must have Texas game! I would have loved to brought one of these home and was within bow range with bow in hand but the ranch I was on does not allow their Blackbucks to be hunted.... but one of these days.... A young and immature blackbuck A almost fully mature black buck. (I had this on at 40 yds broadside at a waterhole!) Back to the hunt: My first full day of bird hunting sucked! WINDY and the birds were NOT responding to calls or coming to food sources! There was so much feed everywhere and the travel corridors were the only ticket..... I saw toms but nothing within bow range. The second full day started about the same..... Gail force winds! Saw two hens on the fenceline I was sitting. When the rest of the guys got picked up for the midday meal and a nap I opted move to a new spot and keep hunting...... and it paid off big!! At 12:20 pm this Longbeard comes down off the hill to my right and starts walking right down the old two-track in my direction! At 19 yds I let him have all he could take of my ACC tipped with a 100 gr. Spitfire! He has a 10 1/2" Beard!!!!!! I about did a backflip I was so happy!!! When everyone came back from the midday nap, we took my photos and I was off to a new blind on water. I got out of my blind to try and stalk the largest Gobbler I have EVER seen!!! This bird had to have no less than 13"-14" of beard!!!! He spied me standing stalk still looking over a burm at him and was GONE faster than you can whistle! I crawled back in the blind hoping some other birds might come to the water on the way to roost..... and they did. Oh did I mention that the wind is still blowing??? Cuz, I might have wanted to try and compensate for that wind when I shot at that Big Gobbler (bigger than mine by an inch or 2)..... as he stood facing me I managed to only cut a couple of feathers off of the downwind side of the bird and he was off to the races with his buddy! I was sick!! Later that evening I missed a gobbler on a spot and stalk, cuz I misjudged my yardage...... But, I had a Fantastic time..... I got the biggest Bearded Bird out of our group of five hunters and it was the only bird taken with a bow! I got to shoot at two other Dandy birds and stalk on a MONSTER!!! All in 2 1/2 days! What a blast!!! I hope I get to go back!! It was great to get Bloody! Thanks for reading. CnS
