Mullin's Got it done in a big way!
Coues 'n' Sheep replied to matthewp45's topic in Coues Deer Hunting in Arizona
i disagree with your quote as most 370-390" bulls never reach 400". when these bulls, "top end bulls," are consistently taken out of one reasonably small area then the genetic potential of the area has to suffer. there are not 400"++ bulls behind every tree, even in unit 9. When these bulls are killed they no longer pass on their genes and 370" bulls breed. although they are not small, they are not top end as the top end gets killed every yr in the same area. last yr. for example, there was not one 400" bull taken out of unit 9 in the archery, early rifle, or late hunts combined. it was an average yr. or better for horn growth and yet no 400" bulls. they have been getting hammered hard in that unit and two 400" type bulls, "top end bulls," out of the same areas year after year affect the areas potential to consistently produce these giants. no problem with the gov. tag, outfitters guiding them, hunters, or anything associated with the tag or hunt, just a simple observation. Hmmmm... So what you are saying is that all you Mossback guys are soooo worried about the elk in unit 9 that you are going to pull all you cameras out of the unit.... stop lobbying for SR and Auction hunters with pics of bulls that you guys have gotten on TC's in 9 over the last 2-5 years???? I think not..... I am pretty sure there are people with masters degrees in Wildlife Biology that have little better understanding of carrying capacities that will detremine what the herd can take.... not an open forum fired up by elk hunters that are not getting paid to hunt with the Big Dogs this year and therefore must remain on the porch..... Furthermore it has only been the "Bad Cop/Worse Cop" Routine between obvious Team MB guys that even brought up what unit the bull was from and Allegedly what part of that unit he was in at the time the Dirt Nap was invoked. As we all know.... when the bulls rub they move... and Wilbur could have been 30 miles away by then..... I mean seriously, if he was that easy to kill and he was the only bull they were hunting do you think they were camping for 9 days and decided to walk out and kill "the bull" on the 10th??? On a completely separate note.... comparing elk to sheep is like comparing cedar trees to century plants..... .....And for those of you that are doubters.... I underjudged a coues buck my buddy killed last week by 18"! I saw the TC pics and he said he thought 105"... I said 102"+ and the buck was taped at 121ish by a P&Y measurer....... I also have been looking at the scouting pics of Wilbur for months and had him at about 410ish.... I am told that many other VERY Qualified elk hunters mis-judged this bull on the hoof, and it is not the first time that has happened. I am quite sure that the Gentleman that tagged this bull does not give a Rip if anyone is "convinced" that the bull is that big....he wanted THAT BULL! The fact is the SCI score sheet is done and headed for the book.... I'd bet you can check it on line in the weeks/months to come if you really have to hold on that tight to the concept that "Team Mullins is Lying about the score!" Better yet, lets stand up and applaud what a great week this has been for the elk all over this state! If I am not mistaken this is one of the largest, if not the largest Auction bull ever taken on Public Land in AZ. A bull of this size taken on public land, will keep funneling those much needed $$$$ back to elk habitat in this great state for years to come!! I'd like to thank the man who purchased this tag, and I pray the tag goes for more $$$ next year! I think rather than turning this thread into a boo hoo, Bitter-fest..... maybe we can get back to the deserved congrats to the Hunter, his amazing Bull, and the great bunch of guys that helped him ground check that Bad Mutha!! A Huge Congrats to "the Guys" and to the very happy man that set his cap for Wilbur 2 months ago!!!! Here is a pic of Wilbur on the hoof.... he is a PIG! (I actually have the Green Light to post it up! ) -

Coues 'n' Sheep replied to matthewp45's topic in Coues Deer Hunting in Arizona
Was it 3/8 or 5/8???? I can't even hear right anymore... I could have sworn Jimmy said 5/8".... Maybe he mumbled.... or I tuned out the ending cuz the middle was sooo WICKED! ....And you won't find any of these pics "floating" around till they have copyrights on them. I deleted all live trail cam pics of this bull that were on my computer a week or so ago.... just so I would not forward them anywhere! As soon as Matt gets done with the SR Hunter there is likely to be more to cheer about, but in the meantime I talked to Jimmy yesterday again and he is truly on cloud 9.... he has been watching this bull for months and there was no ground shinkage!! I will tell you that the bull has already been scored by a master SCI measurer out of Flag-town.... so the those that have heard an SCI score on the Bull.... it is probably the right one.... Congrats to Jimbo..... He.... Da Man!!! -
Congrats on a great buck.

Anyone use a barrel donut/deresonator?
Coues 'n' Sheep replied to firstcoueswas80's topic in Rifles, Reloading and Gunsmithing
It depends on if the barrel is floated or not. Mine, I keep about 3/4" from the end of the barrel. Mine are floated... but I keep them 3/4" from the stock.... seems to work about the same for me where ever I put it on the barrel... but has more funtionality and looks better closer to the stock, IMO.... -
Good talkin' with you Rick. Thanks and see you late this week!

I use them and like them as well. -
Sorry bout your luck there Jason..... Looks like you had a dandy buck there. Keep in mind that having a blind, treestand or camera on a tank does not "Call" the spot for anyone and although it does show intent..... being in the blind first is what defines first come first serve.... I'da had to sleep in my blind for a buck that I knew was that good, if I had a tag in my pocket.

Ya know..... I am gunna go out on a limb and put a pre kill guess on him at 393" gross. ....Even though we can't really see the top end or the beams that good.....
-
Great bull man.... hope you have a chance to slip an arrow in his ribs!

Vern, I was told once that you should avoid getting oils, like from your hands on the horns? But I'd say in the freezer or on dry ice as fast as you can is a Very good idea. Best of luck to you guys on the opener! Tell the Family I said, "Hello!"
-
I saw the buck right off..... and then proceeded to talk myself out of it, figuring you would not make it that easy!!!! What a dummy..... So I kinda failled I guess.....
-
what would you do?
Coues 'n' Sheep replied to arizonaelitefreak's topic in Bowhunting for Coues Deer
Don't let others affect your hunt or plans.... be the first one in and even if they do sit their blind, I'd not worry, too much..... you are not gunna shoot a deer at 100 yds anyhow. Opening weekend of archery deer is like an archery speedgoat hunt in 19A.... ... You just gotta deal with the BS and hope your set up is in the right place at the right time! Good luck to you and to all who are taking up the bow this w/e for some much needed R&R! May you all remember why you are out there.... what your basic reasons for being in the woods are and may you find success in the little things even if you are not fortunate enough to harvest a 'No Brainer'! In the mean time I'll be driving around putting out cameras, pissing off midday water sitters.... and counting the days till JANUARY 1st 2010!!!! Um... and in case you are wondering..... that is a pre-appology if I do drive up to the water you are sitting.... but I will have a cold one for you if I do! Good luck All! -
Well first off, if you are using coolers they had better be newer and good ones....IMO.... to last out the heat, even on the 'Bab. I kinda like to use a little of all that is mentioned here..... for long trips far from Safeway, Walmart, Bashas, etc.... I'll pack a couple of days of fresh meat (steaks, burger, brats) in my regular ice cooler/drink cooler.... and a bag of taters/onions and a few cans of beans.... that will keep you through the first 2-3 days.... then on to the dry ice cooler for the next 3-4 days with hard frozen/ pre-made dishes that are easy to reheat.... spaggetti, stew, greenchilli (take the uncooked tort's and a skillet ), elk Chilli w/ lots o' beans, etc......keep in mind that if you use heat sealed bags like from a vacuum sealer, you can boil your meals in hot water! All that should get you through 6-7 days real easy and probably a left over night! Then jump into the canned foods or the Mountain House stuff if you don't have any meat in camp yet. I have lived on Mountain House for a week to ten days at a time and it will get you by just fine, if you are looking for Really simple (and don't mind the cost ).... I, however, only use it for quad or ranger, or backpack trips when space and weight are an issue. If you go the M H route I'd recomend a box (or 2) of candy bars, some pies, garlic salt, pepper, tobasco, and bread.... that all really makes a M H meal seem just like home! Best of luck to you on the Trip and the Hunt!!! Lots of pics and an epic story is all we ask when you return!!!
