Back from scouting trip

Recommended Posts

I was in 16A with my son this weekend scouting for pigs and was happy to see a few tracks after all the rain from the previous weekend.

We hiked all over a ridge where I shot one last year but did see any sign of the herd, which had about 15 pigs in it.

We hiked further into the wilderness area another mile and while taking a rest I heard a couple of pigs get into it at about 3:45. After five minutes of glassing and watching the area out popped three of them.

We backed out and took the 2 mile hike back to camp which took almost two hours. Biggest mistake was not taking enough water, only about a liter each. Man my calves are tight and sore today.

We did manage to get out early yesterday morning after breaking down the tent and packing up the truck in anticipation of rain and chased quail for a couple of hours managing a few.

One thing I did find odd was the lack of deer sign the further we went from the road. There was quite a bit for the first 1/2 mile but then nothing.

As an added bonus we did see three donkeys but didn't hear any coyotes Saturday night or Sunday morning.

We also only saw a few other people out and although it was warm and humid on Saturday with decent cloud cover we did our fair share of sweating.

The male quail were pretty vocal in the morning so I suspect mating season isn't too far off.
