AZ RANGER

36c Ranch access

Recommended Posts

I am taking my son and a couple of his friends down to hunt 36c over the weekend. This is our first time hunting the unit other than 1 archery trip. We have made 5 trips down scouting so far. I have a good feel for the area and know where I want to go. We are pretty excited to hit the hills. I like that all of the mountains are mostly accessible by foot only. But "mostly" is the key word. I have a couple spots that I plan on glassing from that are 1-2 miles in behind different ranches. But when I look on maps and google earth I see roads all over the place that are only accessible through private property. I'm worried that I am going to hike 2 miles in to hunt country that is away from the crowds only to find vehicles driving down these roads that have special access from the rancher. Am i over thinking this or does this happen a lot down there? What has been your experiences for those that hunt the unit a lot?

Thanks

Scott

I spend A LOT of time in 36c. I have never seen hunters vehicles in the more popular walk in areas (Joe King, Santa Margarita, Schaffer, etc). The ranches towards the southern portion of the unit are less tolerant of hunters than the ranches farther north (Kings Anvil, Elk Horn). You will see vehicles in these walk in areas, but they will be ranchers or Border Patrol. Good luck on your hunt!

Maybe it was rare then, but I have seen trucks drive through the gates to hunt. I watched them too. They were hunters...

Yea, I dont doubt it happens occasionally, but it is not a regular occurance. I am mostly talking about the locked gates that generally only have a ranch lock, BP lock and sometimes a utility company lock on them.

Border patrol ABUSES access to some of these areas. If you see anyone behind a locked gate. Please report to Game and Fush.
