    01/01/09 Archery Muley

Doug, It was amazing. If he would of bugled, it would have been like elk hunting. Yeah he pinned his ears back and would cock his head sideways and he had that kind of bowed up sideways walk to him. He stopped twice on the way in to beat on ocitillos (sp?). Each time he stopped I would grunt and bleat, and he would then just lay his hears back and come on a beeline. I'll go ahead and let someone have my elk tag, that way I will have time for my sheep tag

Here is my buck shot at 8:10am this morning. Glassed him up about 500 yards away. Moved in on him to 175 yards then called him in using a grunt tube and primos can to 40 yards where I drilled him. Not a monster buck but I liked him. Brian

Walked up on a lion yesterday

I am from a trapping family. We haven't trapped since leghold traps were outlawed on public land. Odds are the lion has not been caught for very long. Almost always the lion will pull free or break the trap. They are too powerful for the trap. We have had traps broke quite a few times by lions. We have never walk up on a lion in a trap. I have a good friend that has trapped the San Carlos for a very long time. Except for this year as his knees just won't allow him to do it. He has never caught a lion as they have always pulled loose or broke the trap. That is a very unique experience indeed.

    Double Down on Pigs

Way to go!!! Nice job!!! How much penetration was in the skull? I have seen pigs hit between the eyes that had less that 2" penetration. Again, congrats.

  11. I was able to take my nephew on his first rifle coues deer hunt which was in unit 23. I first found this buck on Wed. morning chasing a doe and knew that he was the kind of buck we were looking for. Friday morning came and the hunt didn't last long as I glass two bucks with a doe within 5 minutes of starting to glass. The big one was the one we wanted. After figuring out a plan to get closer we were able to close to 300 yards. The first shot went right over his back, the buck walked a couple of steps and the second shot put him right down. The hunt was over by 8:15 am. He is a great buck. Here are some pics of Paul and his buck. The buck scores 103" gross.

    Nephew's Unit 23 coues

Thanks everyone for the kind words. Paul really appreciates it. He may be hooked now. Only thing he didn't realize was the work after shooting the buck, the quartering and the pack out. He is still sore. Anyway thanks for taking the time to look at the pics and post the kind words. Thank you. Brian

    Bobcat

Standman, Upon finishing a stand, how far do you proceed to your next stand? Since cat and fox country is usually pretty thick, and the fact that I believe cats and foxes don't come from real far distances (could be wrong but that is my theory), I will go around 3/4 mile between stands. If a canyon or ridge is fairly long, I will call both ends. Also I try to get at least 200 yards from the vehicle.

    Bobcat

azcwby, I've called quite a few cats over the past few years, also I come from a trapping family so maybe I can help you with some info. For bobcats, the first thing to look at is terrian and type of country. Bobcats tend to like canyons, especially those with rocks, rock rims and so forth. Also thick, rocky ridges hold cats. As for calling these areas, especially with canyons. I've have found that staying a hundred or so yards away from canyon or rock rim gives me the best result. I like for the cat to have to come up and out of the canyon to get his food. He has to come all the way in to see what is in distress. The reason I don't like calling in the canyon is that I have had cats come in and stay up on top and just peek down at you, peg ya and then leave without getting a shot at them. Keeping the wind in your face while calling isn't as important when calling cats as human scent doesn't seem to bother them as much as foxes or coyotes. However, if you also want foxes and coyotes to come in then keep the wind in your favor. Stay at least 30 minutes when on stand. Cats most of the time will sneek in at take longer to come. Alot of the time you won't see them come in, all of a sudden they are just there. So keep your movement to a minimum. Bird calls work the best. If you can, get a woodpecker decoy. That keeps their attention away from you. Bobcats are not hard to call in, you just have to be in country that hold them. Also remember that cat country is fox country. Foxes will come in hard and fast. If you kill a fox don't stop calling. Finish your stand. Gun shots won't bother other animals coming in. You could end up with a double or even a triple. Last of all, have fun. You won't get something in on every stand. You just have to stay at it and learn something new everytime you go out. Hope this helps out. If you have any more questions ask away. Brian
  21. This morning I decided to go and make a few stands here in NE Arizona. On my third stand this bobcat came in at the 6 minute mark. He stopped and sat down at 45 yards. That was good enough for me as my 12 gauge roared and he was drt. It was a good morning. Brian
