Third week in January, Unit 29 only with archery equip. Brian
-
My nephew had the same problem. He had the problem on his first ever junior deer hunt. The solution we came up with was an eyepatch. He would pull the eyepatch over his eye when he was ready to shoot. Funny thing was when he finally got his opportunity he forgot to pull the eyepatch down and everything worked fine like he was winking all his life. Since then he hasn't had to use the eyepatch. Funny how things work when adrenaline hits ya. Brian

My brother and I went back down to unit 29 this weekend coues hunting and boy did he hit paydirt. Two weeks ago we found a spot that was just loaded with scrapes, however it didn't seem like the bucks have been back to them in quite awhile. We checked them again yesterday and have the bucks really been using them. We set a treestand up over a spot where he could shoot several of the scrapes. At 10:30 Saturday morning this buck came through and he stuck him good. He gross scores 105 inches. Wow! Were we ever excited. This is the second January in a row that he has taken a buck. As for me, I had my chance and blew it. Oh well maybe next weekend. Thanks, Brian

Hey, my brother and I thank you for all your congrats. Sorry I didn't respond sooner I've been out of town working and I didn't have access to a computer. trophyhntr, we spent around 12 days hunting them this year. We do lots of walking to find the perfect setup. Happened to work out good this time. Arizonabowhunter, The shot was 25 yards, and we set our treestands about 12-15ft high. Doesn't look like I'm going to get down there this weekend. Down where we hunt it had way to much rain. We can't get to our spots because it will be way too muddy. AZOnecam, yeah Mark was a little jealous when I showed him the buck. He still cussing himself over the big one he missed. Anyway thanks again. Brian

JOsdieck, he is putting him on the wall. It is his biggest to date. This buck is his sixth archery coues. There is nothing like huntin' these beautiful deer. Brian

The area I've been hunting, the rut has really slowed down. I was wondering do does come in heat a second time if they weren't bred during the first rut peak? Or are they through the first time? Any info would be appreciated. Thanks.

Thanks Amanda for your response. I will check out the other section. Brian

Jan Bowhunting bucks and boars

I'll be heading to 31 and 32 for pigs the first four days. Then over to 29 to hunt coues deer for the next five days. Hope to go three years in a row in January on deer. Anybody been in 29 lately wondering how the rut is going down there? I just can't handle eating those pigs. After I get the smell of them in my nose and on my hands, that is all I can smell for a month. I have some friends that just love them so they get them if we happen to kill any. Good luck to everyone. Brian -
Here is a pic of my uncle's buck that he killed in unit 23. The pic is only of the horns. I will send Amanda the field pics to post when I get them, if she would. The buck gross scores 92" gross. Thanks, Brian

That is one heck of a Christmas present. Congradulations. Brian

Here are the links to the field pics. He killed the buck at 100 yards. The buck was with another buck and both were chasing a doe. After he killed the buck the other buck chased the doe up the hill and actually bred her. Not too bad for a 68 year old man. Brian

I was down in 29 for three days didn't see much rut activity at all. Talk to some other hunters that said that they had seen a few bucks chasing does. My nephew did miss a little three point at 35 yards other than that it was pretty tough. After I got back from there went to 23 for a couple days with my uncle and cousin. The bucks were just going crazy down there. Bucks were chasing does everywhere. My uncle killed a 95 inch class buck, will try to get pics posted after they are developed. My cousin missed four bucks yesterday, due to inexperience. The bucks he missed were all chasing does. Right after my uncle killed his deer another buck moved in on his doe and mounted her. So the rut in 23 seems to be getting in full swing. Brian

This past sunday in 23 I glassed four bucks with one doe. There were two bucks around the 90 inch mark and two 2 points. The two smaller bucks pushed and chased the doe quite a bit, while the two larger bucks both made scrapes. They made two scrapes apiece. This was the only rut activity I saw in three days of glassing. Brian

I will be taking my nephew archery hunting in 29 for the first four days. Then after Christmas I will be helping my uncle with his rifle tag in 23. Brian

That's just too funny!! Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to everyone here. Brian

I'm looking at loading some 130gr Barnes XBT XLC bullets in my 270 and I'm looking for some load data for it using IMR and Accurate Powders. I was wondering if anybody had any info on this. Searched on the net and I cant find any data. I'm not really wanting to buy the Barnes Manual just so I can get this one load. Any info would be greatly appreciated. Thanks. Brian

The only reason I was wanting to try them was because I was given 5 boxes of them. I thought since I have them I would give them a try. Brian -
Congrats on some great looking bucks!! Brian

Giving Tags to Youths
standman replied to Dan H's topic in Miscellaneous Items related to Coues Deer
From what I understand the tagholder must be parent or legal guardian and must accompany the young hunter on the hunt. My uncle tried to give a tag to a nephew and this is what they told him. Brian
