    lion hunting

This is a pic of a lion I took while coues hunting about 4 years ago I guess. I was heading to a point to glass when I jumped four does; they were heading up the side of the mountain when I saw something jump up on a big rock. I put my glasses on it and it was a lion. As the deer ran by him at about 5 yards I saw him swat at the them. That scared the heck out of them. I ranged him at 420 yards. I took the shot and I knew I hit him by the way he reacted. When I reached the spot where he was at I found blood. Now trailing that lion not knowing where I hit him nearly scared the pudding out of me. The blood trail was good and he only went about 60 yards. It was a perfect hit. I'm not in the pics because I was by myself and didn't have a camera with a timer on it. Brian

    23 coues

I have no problem finding deer in unit 23. I know where quit a few excellent bucks are. My uncle and cousin both have 23 tags and they have already found several bucks that will score 100+. I would take a 23 tag anyday. With a little work plenty of good deer can be found. Brian

    Archery Elk

111, congrats on the bull. Hope to see some pics soon. My brother has been hunting in Unit 1 and we've been having a blast. He'll only shoot a big bull (350+) so we are still trying. Been close quite a few times but seems something always seems to go wrong. This full moon isn't helping at all. Can't keep the bulls blowing very long during daylight hours. First time we've been home all season and only here for a couple hours then we are going back at it. Just thought I would check in and see what's happening. Again congrats on everyones success. Brian

    Brand new

Lark, It has to do with the road hunting law. The warden said that not having the weapon in a case constitutes the ability to take an animal from a vehicle which is road hunting. It's a bunch of crap but we just agreed with him cause he is by our camp everyday and we didn't want to ruin our hunts by having problems with him. So I went up to the Pinetop office and had the rule explained to me. They told me that it is up to the warden to interpret the law the way he wants. That blew my mind. They told me that different regions interpret the laws different ways. Hard for me to understand why they work that way. Brian

Treestandman, you are probably right about getting different answers from officer to officer. I still didn't hunt over the dead cow, I was still leary about being cited for hunting over bait even though I did get an answer from the horses mouth. I have run into game wardens from one part of the state that require you to have your bow or gun in a case if it is in your vehicle or you will be cited for road hunting, while here in the White Mtns you can carry a weapon pretty much any way you want as long as its not loaded. You would think everyone would be on the same page, yet some laws are interpreted differently by different people. Guess its better to check ahead of time in the area you hunt so not to get into trouble. Brian

    Brand new

I went to the G & F last year and asked that very question. They told me that if it happens naturally in the wild then it is legal. I asked this question because I found a dead cow that a bear was feeding off of, and I asked them if it was considered baiting to hunt over it. They told me that if it died naturally in the forest that it is not considered baiting and is legal. Now I don't know if the law has changed since last year but that is what I was told at the Pinetop Regional Office by a game officer. Brian

    Topo Maps

Try topozone.com. You can look at topos at all scales of any area. I use it all the time and print out my own maps of little areas I want to look at. Brian
  15. I bought my first trail camera and set it up near my home. I only put in a 12 exposed film wanting to check it sooner to see if it worked. Had it set for 4 days and it took all twelve pics. It had 51 hits total but since I only had twelve pics that is all it took. All were of elk so I won't post them all, since this is a coues sight. I thought I would post this one though just to see what u thought of it. Thanks Brian

    Nice Coues Deer buck

Wow, awesome buck. Did you take those pics or were they trail camera pics? Brian
  17. Bret, I used 400. The instructions said to use 200 but 400 is what I had so that is what I used. Brian
  18. It has greened up pretty good up in the higher elevations. The rain has been pretty spotty though. It's not raining as much as it should be. My brother has a Unit 1 archery bull tag so we've been trying to find some good bulls. Haven't found any monsters yet. Can't wait to get my camera down in coues country. May even buy one or two more if this one keeps working good. Brian
  19. It's from Arizona Unit 1. I was using the Stealth Cam. I have pics of bigger bulls but my scanner quit working and I can't get them on the puter. Brian

  21. Thanks for your replies. I've got a camera ordered so I'll have to play with it and see how it works. Thanks again. Brian
  22. I was thinking about getting a trail camera, but i was wondering it the flash of the camera spooks the animals. I don't want to set one up on a trail or scrape and have the flash spook them. Then the next time they come by maybe they are more cautious about coming by. Maybe this subject has already been covered, I might have missed it somewhere. Any info or suggestions on this would be appreciated. Thanks, Brian
  23. Here is an email that was received from Primos that was posted on another forum that was interesting: July 22, 2004 To Whom It May Concern: It has taken us a few days to sort through all the issues, rumors and hearsay revolving around the recent court ruling concerning the Elk draw in Arizona. Primos has advertised its products on United States Outfitters' TV show that airs on The Outdoor Channel and we have used USO's licensing services as well as hired USO for its guide services in areas that we were unfamiliar with. Primos has been pleased with all services provided by USO. Through a number of e-mails and phone calls it has become apparent that people have lumped Primos Hunting Calls in with USO as being involved with the court case. It was never our intention to take a position in this matter, but rather to let the courts decide what was equitable or not. That, of course, appears to have been misunderstood. With our use of USO's products, Primos has been included in a fight we did not ask for and do not desire to be a part of. All of us at Primos are first and foremost for the Elk and the places they call home. We do not want to do anything or be a part of anything that takes away from that. At this time, we have decided that in order to support elk, the other wildlife of Arizona, and the places they call home, we should withdraw USO's TV show from our list of sponsorships. We thank you for your input. This has not been an easy decision to reach but after much prayer and thought our decision is based solely on what we feel is best for the Elk and the Elk hunting community. Sincerely, Will Primos President, Primos Hunting Calls Brian
